T aZZ whom it may concern Be it known that l, FRANK lV. CALVERT, a citizen of the United States, and resident of tlwarthmore, county of Delaware, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented an Improvement in Dispensin Cabinets, of which the following is specification.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved construction of dispensing cabinet for toilet papers, which shall be more efiicient and durable than constructions of similar devices heretofore in use.
My invention comprehends certain features of construction, more particularly relating to the spring mechanism for forcing the paper pad forward against the dispensing or dischargingroll, whereby it is strongly installed in the casing and shaped to maintain its effective elasticity for the life of the cabinet without breaking. My invention further embodies, in a cabinet employing a dispensing roll provided with a roughened surface for securing an eflicient frictional contact with the paper and a spring actuated pressure plate adapted to force the paper pad or tablet toward the dispensing roll, or"
means for limiting the approach of the pres sure plate toward the roll whereby the roughened surface thereof is prevented from becoming worm off by undesirable direct contact with the pressure plate.
My invention also consists of details of construction which, together with the, features above stated, will bebetter understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which r Fig. 1 is a front sectional view on line so e of Fig. 2 of a cabinet embodying my improvements, the front cover portion being removed to show the interior; Fig. 2is a vertical sectional View of the same taken on line y-y of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a cross section of a portion of the same "on line z-e oflii 1; Fig. 4 is an elevation showing the construction for holding the spring of the presser plate in position; and Fig. is a perspective view of one of the'retainlng plates for holding the aforesaid spring. The case is provided with sides 2, back and bottom 4-, and is adapted to be closed by a front cover 5, extending over the top and hinged to the back at 6. The lower part of the cover 5 is provided with latch hooks 21 which engage locking arms 20., said locking arms being secured to a rock shaft 2O and Specification of Letters Patent.

spring pressed into locking engagement by coil springs 22. Any other suitable locking means may be employed for holding the cover closed, such devices being well known in the art. The bottom 4 of the case is pro vided with the inclined floor plate 18 having the downwardly directed inclined front por tion 19 to guide the paper sheet through the discharge orifice 7. This discharge orifice is formed between the end of plate 19 and the bottom plate 1- on the one part and the lid 5 on the other, so that when the hinged cover is raised, the discharge orifice is completely open in the front and permits easy cleaning in case of clogging. The cover 5 is provided near its lower part with a roller 8 having roughened surfaces at 9, preferably formed of abrading material such as emery or corundum cemented upon the roller, the latter usually being of wood and secured upon a metal shaft 10. This shaft 10 is journaled in suitable bearings on the cover so as to be carried by and moved with it. It is further provided with the usual ratchet wheel and pawl device at 12 for preventing backward rotation, and with a hand wheel 11 upon the outside of the cabinet by which to rotate the shaft 10 and its roller 8. This construction of the roller and means for operating it may be of the well known con struction and will need no further expl anation.
Hinged at or adjacent to the hinge point 6 of the cover is the presser plate 13, the lower part 16 thereof being bent forward slightly and adapted to approach the roller 8 but held against contacting with it by the two side arms 23 which rest against the cover plate 5, when the plate 13 is in its most forward position. The function of this plate 13 is to support and force the paper pad or tablet against the roughened surfaces 9 of the roller 8, said pressure for performing this function being provided by 2;?- also act as side guides for the paper ack the roller as a discharging device. The arms age 15 to insure its being positioned properly to cooperate with the dispensing roller 9.
- The spring 24 is of a construction which provides great elasticity and strength, is easily secured in position in the case, and the possibility of its breaking under strain is entirely overcome. As shown, this spring is bow-shaped and has its lower ends spirally coiled as at 2 to provide great elasticity, each ,of said spirally coiled parts having their wire portions in the same plane so that a minimum space is required therefore in the case. This is important, it permits the large coils to extend up oneach side of the paper tablet l5 and pressureplate 13 without ob ectionable width being necessary to' the case. The coil 24 has its inner end 25 bent upward and received in a slot formed by two flanges 28 struck up from a retaining plate 26 (Figs; 4 and 5), said retaining plate having on two of its edges, front and bottom, flanges 80 and near its rear a perforated hub-shaped part2?) bet-ween which and the back 3 of the ease the coil extends (Fig. at).
' The plate 26 is bolted against the side plate 2 of the ease by a bolt 27, as shown in Fig. 3, and provides'a box-shaped chamber in which the coil is encased and its end 25 firmly held. The bottom of the coil 24 rests upon the bottom flange 30 and is thus held' in position vertically and its end 25 retained between the flanges 28, as will be understoodby reference to Fig. 4E. The two coiled lower ends of the bow spring are formed and secured in the same manner, only it will be manifest 7 that the box-shaped plates 26 are made 7 right and left handed to fit the opposite walls 2 of the case. It will be seen that by this construction the parts are easily andstrongly assembled. The upper or how end of the spring presses upon the plate 13 near its hinged end and consequently a very small movement of the spring produces a considerable movement of the lower end 16 of the plate. Moreover, because of the small move ment required of the spring, it may be made of relatlvely thlck wlre and hence is not liable to set or break in use.
The paper tablet 15 may be hung upon the plate 13 in any suitable manner, and is so positioned that its lower end just clears the plate 18, and when pressed against theroller 8 the front sheet, when fed downward by the roller, will be guided over the inclined surface 19' and through the aperture 7. The usual method employed for supporting the paper tablet 15 is to provide an upwardly extending tongue 14 from the plate 13 and provide the back of the tablet 15 with a socket part which fits over the tongue, and such construction may be employed, though I do not restrict myself in this particular.
It will now be apparent that I have devised anovel and useful construction which embodies the features of advantage enumerated as desirable, and while I have in the present instance shown and described the preferred embodiment thereof which has been found in practice to give satisfactory and reliable results, it is to be understood that I do not restrictmyself to the details, as the same are susceptible of modification in various particulars without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention.

In a dispensingcabinet, the combination of a case, a dispensing roller arranged in the lower portion of the case, a pressure plate connected with the case and movable toward the roller, a bow spring having its middle portion extended back of the pressure plate to force it forward toward the roller and its two ends coiled spirally and arranged close to the sides of the case, and means for supporting the spring vertically and the inner ends of the coils from rotating said means consisting of two frames relatively secured to the inner walls of the respective sides of the case, said frames each having two flange parts between which the inner ends of the spiral coil is held against turning, a bottom flange for holding the spiral from falling and for maintaining the end in engagement between the flange parts.
5. In a dispensing cabinet, the combination of a case, a dispensing roller arranged in the lower portion of the case, a pressure plate connected with the case and movable toward the roller, a bow spring having its middle portion extended back of the pressure plate to force it forward toward the roller and its two ends coiled spirally and arranged close to the sides of the case, and connecting means between the spiral ends of the spring and the sides of the case consisting of stamped metal plates secured to the case and each having flanges on front and bottom and a perforated hub portion of the same lateral depth at the rear and also two parallel flange parts to receive the inner end of the spiral, the coil confined between the front and bottom flanges and back of the case and positioned by the parallel flanges, the flanges and hub portions positioning the plates on the sides of the case, and bolts extending through the perforated hubs and side walls of the casecfor securing the plates in position.
