IMPROVEMENT IN SELF-LOADING WAGONS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 140,271, dated Juno 24, 1873; application filed May 2, 1873.
To allufliom t may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS HANDY, of Springfield, in the county of Sangamon and in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Loading and Dumping Machines; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings making part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a plan view of the upper side of my improved machine. Fig. 2 is a like view of the lowerI side of the same. Figs. 3 and 4.

The design of my invention is to increase the facility with which earth, coal, &c., may be loaded into and unloaded from a wheeled vehicle 5 and it consists, principally, in the construction of the box or body of the machine, and its connection to or with the supportingframe, substantially as and'for the purpose hereinafter specified. It consists,`further, in the means employed for tilting the pivoted sections of the bottom of said box, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter shown. It consists, further, in the means employed for raising and lowering the body, and for securing the same in vertical position, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter set forth. It consists, further, in the construction and combination of the pivoted bottom and end pieces of the box, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter shown and described.
In the annexed drawing, A and A represent the side rails, and B and Bl the end rails, of the supporting-frame, secured together in a rectangular form, as shown. The endrails B and B have a considerable depth, so as to form bolsters, which respectively rest upon and are connected in the usual manner to a front and a rear axle, C and G', which latter parts are supported by means of ordinary groundwheels D. Between the front bolster B and its axle() is placed the usual ifth-whecl E, and to the forward side of said axle is pivoted a pole, F, all in the usual manner. Journaled within suitable bearings G, secured to or upon the upper side and at the longitudinal centers of the bolsters B and B', is a shaft, H, upon which, near its ends, are affixed two grooved wheels, I. Attached to opposite sides of the periphery of each pulleyI are two cords or chains, K, each of which passes outward to and over a small pulley, L, that is attached to the upper inner corner of a side rail, A, and4 `box lowered. The shaft is operated by means of 'a lever, N, which is pivoted to or upon the same, and at its inner pivoted endis bifurcated so as to span aratchet-wheel, O, thatis secured upon said shaft. Aspring-pawl, n, attached to said lever, engages with said ratchet-wheel and enables the latter and its shaft to be rotated in the direction necessary for raising the box by means of aV vertically-reciprocating movement ofthe outer end of said lever. A cross-bar, l?, extends from the longitudinal center of one side rail A transversely across the frame and rests upon a longitudinal rail, Q, which extends between the end railsB and B', near the opposite side rail A. Upon or within the cross-bar B is provided a bearing for the central portion of the shaft H, upon one side of which bearing is placed the operating-lever and ratchet-wheel, while upon the opposite side of the same is secured to said shaft a second ratchet-wheel, It, with which engages a pawl,.S, that is pivoted upon the side of said cross-bar. The ratchet-wheel R and pawl S lock the shaft in position when the operating-lever is moving backward. The sides of the box M are made close, and are connected together byrneans of two cross-bars, m, that extend between their upper outer corners, anda third crossbar, m', which extendsbetween the lower edges of said sides, near their longitudinal centers, the whole being so arranged as to leave the upper and lower sides and the ends of said box open. The rear end of the box is inclosed by means of a tail-board, T, which is pivoted at its upper corners to or. between the sides in such a manner as to enable the lower side of said board to swing freely in a line with the draft. The lower side of the boxisinclosed by means of two traps, U, which are pivoted at or near their rear ends between the box sides, so as to be capable of tilting upward to the position shown in Figure 4.
The traps U are operated by means of the followin g-described appliances: Two shafts,V, are journaled within the upper edges of the box sides, nearly over the `ivotal bearings of the traps, and upon the extended end of each is provided a radial arm, v, which extends downward outside of said box. An arm, u, corresponding in length to the like feature of the arm c, is secured upon the extended end of each pivotal bearing for the traps, and the outer end of the same, and the corresponding ends of the contiguous arm fu are connected together by means of a bar, W.
As thus arranged, by partially rotating the shafts V the traps U will be moved from a horizontal to an inclined position so as to dump the contents of the box, after which, by reversing the motion of said shafts, said traps will be returned to their normal positions and the box again prepared for the reception of a load. Two levers, X, secured upon and extending upward from the shafts V, enable the latter to be operated as described.
In order that the end-board T may be prevented from swinging outward, except when the traps are tilted, a stud, u', is secured upon the rear edge of the rear trap, and, extending upward therefrom, engages with the outer side and lower edge of said end board.
The box M is secured in horizontal position by means of the following devices: Attached to the rear end of each box side is a guide-rod, Y, which receives the end of a horizontal rod, Z, that is secured to and extends forward from the rear axle, the embracing end of said rod Z having a sufficient size to enable it to slide freely upon said guide-rod. Asimilar guide-rod,Y',
is attached to the forward end of each box'side, and receives the embracing end of a braee'rod, Z', the forward end of which is attached to a metal plate, A', that is secured uponY the kingbolt z' immediately below the front axle. This attachment of the box enables its horizontal position to be insured without in any manner interfering with its freedom of vertical motion.
The device thus constructed may be used as a scraper by lowering its box sufficiently to bring the front end of the same into contact with the ground, or it may be used as an ordinary dumping-wagon and loaded in the usual manner.
Having thus fully set forth the nature and merits of my invention, what I claim as new 1. The box M, constructed as shown, and connected with the rear-axle C' and the plate A by means of the guide-rods Y Y and brace rods Z Z', substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. In combination with the pivoted traps U of the box M, the shafts V, the arms u and '0,'
the connection W, and the levers X, substanu', substantially as and for the purpose shown and described.
