Application filed December 24, 1919.
T0 aZ/l whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Louis S. Hanson, a a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Lewistown, in the county of Fergus and State of Montana, have invented a new and Improved Radiator-Shutter, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact clescription.
I have constructed a radiator shutter which may be operated by any suitable means, as for instance an operating device, as shown may be used.
Reference is had to the attached sheets of drawings which illustrates one practical embodiment of my invention, and in which Figure 1 is a front view of a radiator having my improved shutter applied thereto;
Fig. 2 is a partly sectional plan view of the same;
Fig. 3 illustrates one practical embodiment of a manually-operable control;
Fig. 4.- is an end view of the same;
Fig. 5 is a sectional view along line 5--5, Fig. 3;
Fig. 6 is a sectional side view of the improved shutter mechanism;
Fig. 7 is a rear view thereof;
Fig. 8 is a sectional view taken along line 88 of Fig. 6; and
Fig. 9 is a sectional view taken along line 99 of Fig. 7.
Fig. 10 is a side view of the operating mechanism as a whole utilized for actuating the shutter.
In all these views like reference characters designate similar parts, and the reference numeral 1 indicates a radiator forwardly of which are positioned horizontal strips 2, the spaces between said strips being adapted to be closed by means of vanes 3, herein after more fully described.
The strips 2 are each formed of a single piece of material having its forward end bent downwardly and inwardly and terminating in a hinged part a from which the vanes 3 are swingingly suspended. Brackets 5 have one of their ends rigidly secured to any desired part of each vane, which brackets terminate in a sidewise-extending arm portion 6.

sociated with the arm portion 6 of the brackets and may be movably affixed thereto by being provided with openings through which the arm portion 6 may project, the operating lever being secured from displacement by any convenient means, such as, for instance, cotter pins 8.
For operating the vanes, there may be conveniently associated with the dashboard a manual control, which may include a hand wheel 9 connected with an operating rod 10 having its lowermost portion screw threaded, as at 11, and extending between the side members of a frame 12. A block 13, provided with a screw-threaded opening through which the portion 11 of the operat ing rod 10 projects, is slidably mounted in the frame 12 by virtue of its engaging the upper and lower bars thereof. The block 18 carries with it a rod 14, the lower end of such rod being connected to a system of linkage 15 which, by any convenient means, such as a bell crank 16, imparts an oscillating motion to the operating lever 7 about the pivots formed by the hinged connections 4. of the vanes 3, horizontal strips 2 and the bell crank 16.
It will now be seen in operation that should it be desired to open or close the vanes this may readily be accomplished by rotating the hand wheel 9 to retract or project the rod 14 and operate the linkage sys tem 15. which will result in the swinging of the bell crank 16 and the oscillation of the operating lever 7. By virtue of the connection between the operating lever 7 and the arm portion 6 of the brackets 5, the vanes will be swung around their hinged connection 4 upon the lever 7 being oscillated. as has been indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 9. it being noted that any fine de rigidly attached te each of said vanes, equallength arms forming continnations 0f said brackets, a lever formed with a, series of equally spaced openings the ends of said am s being adapted to extend through said openings, a rockingiy supported bellemnk,
1 said bellmeans for rocking said belicrank,
crank having its point of rocking support in line With the points of hinge suspension 01 said vanes, one of the arms of said bellerank being in line with the series of openings formed in said lever and extending (through one of the same.
