STANTON M. CHILD, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
ROTATABLE MACHINE BOARD.
onaco.
Application filed September 12, 1921.
T all whom it may concern Be it known that I, STANTON M. CHILD, a
citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have made an invention appertaining to Rotatable Machine Boards; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact'description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention has for its object to provide a rotatable supporting board for supporting relatively heavy machines, particularly office machines, in order that the machines may be operated from the different positions relative to surrounding objects, such as tables, book or card supporting devices, and other office furniture, that will not vibrate or wobble in the operation of the machine, and wherein provision is made for securing the machine and the board in the position to which it may be turned. The invention particularly has for its object to provide in connection with such a rotatable board a structural arrangement that can be readily formed at a low cost of production and yet will be sufficiently rigid to fully withstand the use to which such a structure will be subjected. V
The invention may be contained in structures that vary in details and that will come within the scope of the invention, as set forth in the combinations of elements found in the claims appended hereto. The structure containing the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings and is described hereinafter.
Figure 1 of the drawings illustrates a bottom view of the rotatable board. Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 22 indicated in Fig.- 1.
1, in the figures, is the board that may be formed of any suitable material, such as wood, on which a machine, such as a typewriter, an adding machine, or other similar machine, may be located.- If desired, the machine may be secured by suitable fastening members, well known in the art, to the board. To the under side of the board is attached a circular flanged member 2. The flanged member 2 may be formed of anL- V Specification of Letters Patent.

iron bent circularly or it may be formed of EL StIIp of metal that is turned inwardly by die-pressing, or other method, leaving the flange or skirt 8 extending downward from the under surface of the board 1. A pair of cross-bars 4; are secured to the flanged memher 2 by means of the bolts and nuts 5. The cross-bars 4 may be L-bars and the webs of the L bars may be secured to the table top by the screws 6 whereby the flanged member 2, as well as the cross-bars 4:, will be securely attached to the board 1. A pair of brace members 7 are secured by suitable means, such as the rivets 8, to the flanges of the cross-bars 4. The brace members 7 extend towards each other and are riveted together by the rivets 9, the endsof the brace members 7 where they connect with one or the other of the cross-bars t being located some distance apart and being riveted together at the central portion which forms an eflicient bracing means between the central portions of the brace members and the board 1.. Each of the brace members 7 at the central portion thereof is bent semi-circularly so that when the brace members are riveted together they form a substantially cylindrical shaped opening 10 between the brace members leaving small wedge-shaped spaces 11 that areonecessarily formed in the bending of the brace members ,7. The brace I members 7 are located at ashort distance from the under side ofthe board 1 anda tubular member 12 is located in the circular opening 10. The tubular member 12 forms a stem or bearing member of large cross-sec tlonal area and consequently of large contact or supporting area. The board 1 and the parts attached thereto are rotatively supported by the tubular member 12. The
tubular member 12 is'secured in position by means of a cotter in 13 that extends through the tubular mem er 12 and so as to hold the other end of the tubular member 12 against the lower side of the board 1. The ends of the'cotter pin 13 rest upon a washer 14 located on the brace member 7.
A pair of members 15 are bent to form horizontally extending bars and are secured together at their central portions by the rivets 16. The ends of the substantially radially extending bars are provided with cushioned feet 17. The central portions ofthe members '15 are also bent semi-circularly so that when the said members are secured together by the rivets 16 they form the cylindrically shaped opening 18 having a diame ter slightly greater than the tubular member 12 and so that the tubular member 12 may be inserted in the opening 18, the surfaces of the central portions of the members 15 forming a large bearing area for holding the board 1 in position and yet enabling rotaformed integral with the washers 20 by bending the central portion of the metal from which the washers are formed in a direction at right angles to the surface of the metal. The lugs 22 are inserted in the wedge- shaped spaces 11 and 19 so as to prevent rotation of the washers when the board 1 is rotated. This causes the washers 20 to frictionallyengage the fiber washer 21 and thusfrictionally resist rotation of the table 1, to a small degree. i
One of the substantially radially extending bars formed from the members '15 is provided with a U-bar 23 that is pivotally secured by means of the screw 24.- to the bar on which it is located. The sides of the U- bar extend on opposite sides of the supporting bar whereby the U-bar is guided in its pivotal movements. A spring 25 is located within the U-bar and between the upper edge of the supporting bar and the back of the U-bar. It is secured to the U-b'ar by a pair of pin-points 26. It is so shaped as to press against the upper edge of the supporting bar to cause the U-bar to be raised. The back of the U-bar extends outward to form a substantially radially extending strip 27. The flange 3 of the flanged member 2 is provided with a plurality of notches 28 that may register with the strips 27 so that the flanged member 2 may be engaged by the U-bar at any one ofthe notches 28. The outer end of the strip 27 may be provided with a finger-piece 29 whereby the U-bar may be conveniently depressed. The table 1 may thus be rotated to any desired position together with machine supported thereon when the U-bar is depressed. The U-bar may then be released and ifit'doesnot enter a notch 28 the table, together with the machine, may be rotated a short distance so as to permit one of the nearer notches to register with the U-bar 23 and be engaged thereby.
for interconnectingthe parts, such as screws,
Any suitable means or devices may be used rivets,;andsome of the parts, if desired, may be welded together, in the manner well known in the art. i
I have thus provided by my invention an and eflicient rotatable support having a low altitude that is durable and has large bearing areas that will prevent vibration, which is eXceedinglyvalua-ble particularly when used for supporting finger operated oflice machines.
I claim 1. In a rotatable supporting board for adding machines or the like, a board, a flanged circular member secured to the board and having L. cross-bars interconnecting portions of theflange and extending approximately across the circle of the flange, brace members interconnecting the L members and secured to each other, the brace members forming a cylindrically shaped opening, a tubular member extending through the said opening, a pair of members secured together and forming a cylindrical shaped opening and having L cross-bars interconnecting portions of the flange and extending approximately across the circle of the flange, brace menrbers interconnecting the L members and secured to each other, the. brace members forming a cylindrically shaped opening, a tubular member extending through the Silltl opening, a pair of members having a cylindrical opening between the said last named members for receiving the tubular member and bent to form bars extending substantially radially from the saidtubular member, cushioned feet connectedlto ends of the said bars, thecircular flanged member being provided wlth a plurality of notches, a
