Be it known that I, ViLAs H. JACKSON, a citizen ofv the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and IState of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Excavating-B uckets, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to excavating buckets and more particularly to a bucket adapted for use fin all kinds of excavating operations and with most types of excavating machinery which are at present in use.
An important object of the invention is to 'provide a bucket of th is type wherein the opf eration of the bucket is semi-automatic.
A further object of the invention is to provide a bucket of the type described which may be readily adjusted for use in various kinds of work and soils, and in which such adjustments may be made with a minimum expenditure of labor and time.
A further object of the invention is to provide a bucket which inV its various sizes is particularly adapted to strip coal and ore lands, quarries, level town sites, make cuts and fills in railway and highway construction, and in fact upon all 'manner of construction operations such as cam and mill ponds, bridge ap'- proaches, levees, ditches, su ways and cellars, and for unloading open top scows and storage bins.
A further object of the invention is to provide a bucket which requires but an instants light and safe work at the site ofexcavation immediately before and after filling, from but one laborer who may also act as a signal man, and with which the dragging of the lot d to dump, dumping, righting and returning the bucket to excavation are entirely controlled by the engineer from his proper place, by manipulation of the controlling cables.

Referring now more particularly to 'the drawings, the numeral l0 indicates the usual bucket shell which, in the construction of the device, will bemade in various sizes in ac cordance with the requirements of the work. This shell is provided with the usual open front end and top and is provided upon the bottom and rear surfaces thereof with reinforcing strips or'shoes ll which contact the ground and prevent undue wear upon the shell l0. These side arms lllare provided at their lower ends or those ends thereof adjacent the pivot 13 with a forwardly disposed cutting point l5 which normally engages the ground as the bucket is slid thereover and witha rearwardly extending foot '16' provided with a sharpened anchor point or tooth 17 for use in dumping on slippery grades. rEhe arms 14 extend vertically a short distance and areV then provided with a bend and extend forwardly from the bucket. By inspecting the drawings it will be seen that while these fory wardlyl extending portions are approximately horizontal the tooth 17 is free from engagement with the ground and that whenk the forwardly extending portions are shifted to, or slightly bevond7 the vertical position, the tooth 17 cornes into engagement with the ground.

lt will be obvious that by the construction recited the amount of labor ordinarily reouii d for dumping the bucket and returnsame to normal position is eliminated and that the 1-abfn required of the field opcrater is not such that it requires greatv strength.
Giving t@ the principal construction of my bucket whereby in using and during filling' the bucket requires no excess Weight beyond that necessary to secure sufficient strength in construction it ivill accordingly be capable of manufacture at a relatively low cost. l

it is practically impossible for my bucketV to be primarily dumped from Striking some plish the Work in a most satisfactorymanner and at a higher rate of speed than any known existing` bucket. Due to the light Weightv of the bucket the depreciation of equipment and cost of operating are relatively low. i
Cars, trucks and Wagons may be loaded for the use of my bucket by simply providing` the usual inclinedchutes having a stop for the bucket. and a large opening` at the point of dumping.

Havingv new described my invention, what l claim is:
1. in an excavating bucket, a shell, a bail embodying,1 side arms pivotally` connectedV when the side arms are horizontally disposed and engagingthe ground as the arms are shifted to the vertical position.
2. In an excavating bucket, a shell, a bail embodying side arms pivotally connected with said shell atfits forward end adjacent the bottom thereof, said bail being adapted to be adjustably positioned about the pivots thereof, a chain guide secured to the rear end of said shell approximately centrally thereof, a chain secured at one end to the exterior of the rear end of said shell, a cross arm connecting the side arms of said bail, said chain extending throughsaid guide and o; showing one application of my device in being secured to said cross arm, a tooth carried by each of said side arms, said teeth being out of engagement with the ground when the side arms are horizontally disposed and the ground the arms are shifted to the vertical position, a draft line secured tc the free ends of said bail arms and adapted to shift said shell in one direction, a rotatable member said chain intermediate its point of connection with lsaid shell and said guide and a second draft line connected with said rotatable member and adapted to shift said shell in t ie opposite direction.
3. ln an excavating bucket, a shell provided rearwardly with a heel, a bail arm pivotally connected to each side of said shell at the forward end thereof adjacent the bottom, a chain secured to the outer surface of said shell adjacent the heel thereof, and operatively connected with said bail a draft line connected to the free ends of said bail arms and adapted to move the shell in one direction, a draft line engaging said chain and adapted to move the bucket inthe opposite direction, whereby said draft lines s iift said bail arms about the pivots there of, and means for engaging said chain to secure said bail arms against movement by said chain. i

5. ln an excavating bucket, a shell, a bail embodying side arms pivotally connected with said shell at its forward end adjacent the bottom thereof, said bail being adapted to be adjustably Vpositioned about the pivots thereof, a chain guide `secured to the rear end of said shell approximately centrally thereof, a chain secured at one end to the exterior of the rear end of said shell, a cross arm connecting the side arms of said bail, said chain extending through said guide and being secured to said cross arm, a tooth carried by each of said side arms, said teeth being out of engagement with the ground when the side arms are horizontally disposed and engaging the ground as the arms are shifted to the Vertical position, and a 'stop adjustably mounted upon said chain intermediate said bail arms and said guide.

7. ln an excavating bucket, a shell provided rearwardly With a heel, a bail arm pivotally connected to each side of said shell the forward end thereof, a chain secured to the outer surface of said shell adjacent the heel thereof and operatively connected with said bail arms, the free ends of said hails arms being` adapted for attachment to a draft line to move the shell in one direc'- tion, and a chain Wheel engaging said chain and adapted for attachment to a draft line to move the shell in the opposite direction.
