COMBINATION COMB AND BRUSH.
Patented Dec. 27, 1921.-
Application filed December 10, 1920. Serial No. 429,640.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NICOLAUS BABIRAD, a citizen of Poland, residing at Charleroi, in the county of Washington and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Combs and Brushes, of which the following is a specification.
The main object of this invention is the provision of a combined comb and brush, the device embodying a single brush and three combs, each of the combs being provided, if desired, with teeth variably spacedapart, so that the device may be useful both to men and women, as well as to the particular tastes of either.
The above and other objects will become apparent in the description below, in which characters of reference refer to like-named parts in the drawings.
Referring briefly to the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of my device. 1
Fig. 2 is a planview, partly in section, of the same. p
Fig. 3 is a side elevational view of the same.
Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional view taken upon the plane 4-4 of Fig. 2. V v
Fi 5 is a cross-sectional view taken upon the p ane 5-5 of Fig. 2.
Referring now in detail to the drawings, the numeral 1 represents the handle portion and 2 the main frame of my device. A cover 3 is removably attached by means of screws 4 to the frame 2, and brush members 5 protrude from the underside of the said frame. A slot 6 is provided in the handle 1, and therein a comb 7 is pivotally mounted by means of a pin 8 extending through the slot and handle. A smalldrum 9 is rigid with said pin in said slot, and is recessed at 10.
near the periphery. A pin 11 is resiliently mounted in the handle by means of a spring 12, a cap 13 retaining said spring and pin in place, said spring urging said pin 11 against said drum 9. Another spring 32 is secured at one end to an eyelet 13 in the slot, and at the other to a cord 14: attached at 15 to the drum 9 near the periphery of the latter. The latter spring 32 urges the comb 7 in a counter clockwise or outward direction, and the recess 10 is so positioned that, when the comb 7 is fully extended in operative position the pin 11 engages said recess inner end of the slot 6, adapted to releasably and resiliently retain said comb by contact with said recess when the comb is in concealed posltlon within said slot. An additional recess 18 is provided on the edge of the handle 1 adjacent said slot so that the comb 7 may be readily gripped'when in concealed osition.
On either side of the frame 2 a slot 30 is provided for the concealment of a comb 19.
Each of said combs 19 is longitudinally slotted at 20, and a' pin 21, at the end of the slot 30, passes through said slot 20, the comb 19 being rotatable and slidable about said pin 21. Recesses 2 1 in the edges of the frame 2 adjacent the slots 30 provide access to the combs 19 when concealed, so that they may be gripped and withdrawn.
The combs 19 are provided with conical recesses 26 adapted to receive pins 25, the latter being urged toward the combs by springs 27 retained by caps 28. These pins engage the recesses 26 when the combs 19 are in exposed position for use.
When it is desired to comb the hair without thereafter smoothingout the hair with the I brush, the comb 7- alone is used, the combs 19 being concealed. However, when it is desired to both comb and brush the hair on both sides of the part, this is done in one operation on each side by exposing both combs 19 for use and then stroking the hair with a comb 19 and at the same time pressing the brush 5 against the hair, the combs- 19 being extended by the finger applied to the recesses 24;, so as to cause them to turn outwardly, pivoting onthe pins 21 and then reentered with their teeth outward, the
combs, due to their slots and pin engage-.
ment being reversed and extending outwardly from the body, as shown in the upper portion of Fig. 2. I claim: Y
1. A device of the class described comprising a laterally slotted frame, a slotted handle integralltherewith, a comb pivotallyf mounted in the slot of said handle, resilient means for retaining said comb within the slot, a pair of combs having longitudinal. slots disposed in the slots of said frame, pins slot at the outer end thereof, a drum fixed on said pin, a comb secured to said drum 10 Within the slot, resilient means Within the slot adapted to actuate said drum rotating the comb outwardly, and resilient means for retaining said comb When extended.
In testimony whereof I aifix my signature. 15
