THEODORE KAUFER,
OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
GARMENT-HANGER.
Application filed May 2,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THEODORE KAUFER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of New York, in the county of 'Bronx and State of New York, have invented certain new and usefullmprovements in Garment-Hangers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
This invention relates to garment hangers and has for its object to provide a simplified form of hanger which may be readily adjusted to fit diiferent sizes of coats.
This invention is designed as an improvement on the hanger disclosed in my application filed December 3, 1920, Serial No. 428,002, and aims to simplify the construction of the adjustable shoulder members, as well as the means carried by said members for holding the looped flexible member, by.
means of which the hanger is supported and which also forms a cross bar below the shoulder members for holding other garments.
The invention will be first hereinafter clescribed in connection with the accompanying drawings, which constitute part of this specification, and then more specifically defined in the. claims at the end of the description.
In the accompanying drawings, wherein similar reference characters are used to designate corresponding parts throughout the several views:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a hanger constructed substantially in accordance with this invention.
Fig. 2 is a front elevation of said hanger.
Fig. 3 is a detailed plan view of one of the adjustable shoulder members.
Fig. 4 is an end elevation of said member looking at the left hand end thereof in Fig. 3 and Fig. 5 is a detailed section of the interengaging portions of said shoulder members showing the lugs projecting from said members into the grooves thereof for retaining the members in alinement and permitting the use of a single clamp for holding them in adjusted positions.
The garment hanger consists of two similar shoulder members 1 and 2 having overlapping portions 8 provided with registering slots 9 into which angularly bent lugs 10 on the respective members extend as best shown in Fig. 5. Said shoulder members are retained in adjusted position by a bolt Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 13, 1921.
1921. Serial No. 466,115.
16 passed through the registering slots 9 and fitted with a thumb nut 17, as shown in Fig. 2. The lug 10 engaging the slots 9 retains said shoulder members in proper alinement so that a single clamping bolt 16 is all that is required for securing said members in any desired adjustment.
The shoulder members 1 and 2 are preferably made of sheet metal and each has a widened portion 3 at its outer end. The lateral edges of said widened portions are preferably curved downwardly, as at 7, Figs. 2 and 4, to conform more closely to the internal contour of the shoulders of a coat. A transverse slot 4: is formed in the end portion 3 of each shoulder member and a downward projection 5 is cut and bent down from said portion as shown in Figs. 2, 3 and 4. A transverse slot 6 is formed in the lower end of each of the downward projections 5, see Fig. 4,, and a flexible member or strap 11 of webbing, or other suitable material, is passed through the slots 4 and 6, as best shown in Fig. 2. The slots 4 may be curved, as indicated in dotted lines at 160 in Fig. 1 for making the flexible member 11 conform more closely to theinternal contour of the shoulders of a coat. A ring 12 is attached at 13 to the upper portion of the flexible member 11 for conveniently supporting the hanger.
Said flexible member 11 has overlapping end portions arranged between the downward projections 5 of the shoulder members, and said overlapping portions are provided with spaced eyelets 15 adapted to be engaged by hooks 1 1 on the extremities of the flexible member, so that said member may be adjusted as to length, as will be readily understood by reference to Fig. 2, to correspond with adjustments of the shoulder members. When the hanger is supported, as shown in Fig. 2, the weight thereof will hold the flexible member taut so that 'the portions thereof which extend above the shoulder members will support the collar of a coat, while the portion of said flexible member extending between the downward projections 5 may be employed for supporting trousers, skirts, or other garments.
I claim;
1. In a garment hanger, the combination with a sheet metal shoulder member having depending portions cut and bent therefrom near its ends, of a flexible collar supporting member engaging said depending portions and extending across between them for sup porting other garments below the shoulder member, said flexible member also extending above the shoulder member, and means for supporting the hanger from the upwardly extending portion of the flexible member.
2. In a garment hanger, the combination with a sheet metal shoulder member having depending portions cut and bent therefrom near its ends, there being slots in the lower ends of said depending portions, of a flexible I end portions thereof, there being slots in the lower ends of said depending portions. and slots in said shoulder member, of a flexible collar supporting member passed through the slots in sald shoulder member and also through the slots in the depending portions,
said flexible member extendingacross between the depending portions for supporting other garments below the shoulder member, said flexible member also extending above the shoulder member, and means for supporting the hanger from the upwardly'exv tending portion of the flexible member. 1
A. In a garment hanger, the combination with a sheet metal shoulder member having depending portions out and bent from the end portions thereof, there being slots in the -lo'wer ends of "said depending portions and slots in the extremities of said shoulder member beyond said depending portions, of a flexible vcollar supporting member passed through the slots in said shoulder member and also through the slots in the depending portions, said flexible member extending across between the depending portions for supporting other-garments below the shoulder member, said flexible member also ex tending above the shoulder member, and
'means for supporting the hanger from the upwardly extending portion'of the flexible member. 7 V 7 5. In a garment hanger, the combination with a sheet metal shoulder member having depending portions out and bent from the end portion thereof, there beingslots in the lower ends of said depending'portions and slots in said shoulder member, ofa flexible collar supporting member passed through the slots in said shoulder member and also through the slots in the depending portions, said flexible member extending across be-' tween the depending portions for supporting other garments below the shoulder member,
said flexible member also extending above the shoulder member, said slots in the shoulder member being curved for the purpose specified, and means for supporting the hanger from the upwardly extending portion of the flexible member, 3 a
In testimony whereof I have signed my name .to this specification.
