CREnvr,-; a citizen of the United States, and a 'resi-; dent; of the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented, certain new and useful Improvements T n an Automatic-Feed Memorandum Device; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, andexact description ofthe same,- reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the numerals of reference marked thereon, which form. a part of. this specification. W v r This invention relates more particularly to an improved form of an automatic feed .memorandum device wherein paper is ad-' vanced over a pivoted writing table when said table is released from a depressed writing position.
Itis an object of this invention to vcon- 'struct a memorandum device with an automatic paper feed.
It is also an object-of this invention to provide a memorandum device having a pivoted writing table adapted to be pressed down into a writing position andg'further adapted upon release thereofto automatically return to normal position and simultaneously advance paper over the writing table.
Another object. of the invention. is the device wherein a movable writing support is adapted to automatically feedpaper into a position to be written on.
It is a further object of the inventionto construct a memorandum holder adapted t automatically feed paper at the completion of the writing of each line of'a memorandum being written thereon.
It is furthermore an object of this invention to provide a memorandum device wherein the resting of a'hand upon a table will move the same into a position to per-. mit; writing thereon, sald table adapted upon removal of the hand at the completion of the writing of a line to return to normal position and automatically feed sufficient aperinto the writing space to permit writing of anotherlinej.

The front margin of the writing plate is bent downwardly to form a' guide flange 11. The sills 6 and 7.-have their rear- -porti;ons directed downwardly to aiford' inclined brackets orarms 12, the ends of which are formed to afiord sockets 13 to removably receive the. reduced ends of an axle or rod 14 upon which is engageda rolled web of paper 15, whose inner surface is carbonized. lntegrally connecting the sills 6 and 7 at the upper ends of the brackets 12 is a guide strip 16, the front margin of which is bent upwardly to afford a guide fiange' 17. The rear edge of the guide strip 16 is provided to serve as aknife or blade 18 for cutting 013? paper. Secured to the sills 6 and 7 and alittle below the cutter strip 16 is a guide plate 19.
The sills 6 and 7 are provided with openings 20 for receiving the hooked end of bracket plates 21. Each of the bracket plates 21 is provided with a slot 22 to permit adjustment of the bracket plate when a retaining screw 23 is loosened Each bracketplate 21 has a plate spring 24 integrally formed thereon with the rear end curled to afford a support for a rotatable transverse auxiliary shaft or axle 25. Rigidl'y secured on the auxiliary axle 25 are two small secondary friction wheels 26, the peripheral surfaces of which are-roughened or knurled and adjustably bear upon the knurled peripheralsun faces of two large main friction wheels 27 secur'edinplace upon the main axle 4.
A main power spring=28 has one en'dadjustably secured to the outer surface of one of the frame arms 3,- while the other end is engaged beneath a lug 29 struck outwardly from-thetable sill 7 as shown in Fig. 2; The main spring table- 8=in anielevated position. r

'As illustrated in Fig.3, the paper 15 is guided overthe hori-' zontal bar connecting; the arms 3, and around therolled web'of paper 33 with the carbon-- iz'ed side of the paper 15 contacting the pa" per-33.-Both of the papers 15 and 33*a're led through the table slot 10" over the writing plate 9'and' then between the two sets of feed wheels or rollers 26 -27. From the feed rollers 26 27 the two sheets of paper 15 and 33 pass between the cutter plate 16 and the plate 19. Rigidlysecured to the arm 3 adjacent the sill 6,'is one end of a forwardly directed arm-, 34,'the upper edge of which is provided with 5 an integral inwardly directed lug '35", which projects through an opening'36 in the frame sill 6, The front end of the arm 34 has a notch 37 therein for receiving a notched head or flange 38' formed at right angles on the front end 'of an operating link or bar 39.- Thebar 39 is deflected intermediate its endsand is pivoted on the outer surface of 8 acts to-normally' hold ithethe sill 6 by means of a pivot pin 40. The rear end of the pivoted bar 39 has pivotally connected thereto the lower end of a link 41, the upper end of which is pivotally connected by means of a pin to the lower arm 42 of a bell crank 43 pivoted on the main shaft or axle 4. The bell crank 43 comprises a lower arm 42 and an upper arm 44 vconnected to one another at their inner ends. Secured on the main axle 4 is a ratchet-wheel 45. Pivoted on the inner surface of the framesill 6 and above the main axle 4 is a gravity-acting detent or pawl 46 disposed in the plane of the ratchet-wheel 45 and adapted to engage with theteeth thereof to permit rotation of the ratchet-wheel and the axle 4 in one direction only, and preventing a reverse rotation. Pivotally mounted on the outer end of the arm44 of the bell crank 43 is'an actuating ratchet or pawl 47. To hold the ratchet 47 in engagement with the teeth of the ratchetwheel 45, a controlling spring 48 is provided and has one end secured to the arm 44 and the other end engaged with the ratchet 47 as illustrated in Fig. 5.
The operation is as follows: The carbonized paper 15 and the paper 33 pass through the table slot oropening '10 over the writing plate 9 with the carbonized underside of the paper 15 resting upon the upper surface of the paper 33. The double papers pass between the feed rollers 26 and 27 and then pass below the cutter or knife plate 16'out over the plate19. The upper or auxiliary-axle 25 is resiliently supported 100 the springs 24 to permit'papers of different thicknesses to pass between the friction feed rollers. Botation of the axle at causes the feed wheels 27 to rotate rearwardly to advance or feed the two sheets of paper 15 and 33 over the writing plate 9 to position a clean portion of the paper over the writing plate to permit the next line of the memorandum to be written. A counter or reverse rotation of the axle 4i and the ratchet-wheel a5 is-'prevented by the pawl 46, which falls by gravity to engage behind the ratchet-wheel teeth.
The roughened or knurled peripheral surfaces of the feed rollers 27 engaging the under surface of the paper 33 cause movement thereof, thereby also causing movement of the paper 15 and rotation of the small rollers 26 which frictionally rest upon the upper surface of the paper 15.
The operation may thus be repeated until the memorandum is completed. The duplicate sheets of paper may then be out or severed from the rest of the rolls by simply pulling upwardly thereon to force the same against the cutting edge of the knife 18.
The carbonized paper of course permits the making of a carbon copy of the memorandum on the paper 33. If no carbonized copy is desired the paper roll 15 may be omitted and the paper 33 fed across'the writing plate 9. I a
. I am aware that numerous details of construction may be varied through a wide range without departing from the principles of this invention, and I therefore do not purpatent granted otherwise pended claims.
I claim as my invention: i
1. In an automatic feed memorandum device the combinationwith a pivoted writing table, of a frame, a main axle on said frame for supporting said table, feed rollers on saidmain axle, means for operating the same to cause paper to be fed over thetable, brackets adjustably mounted on the sides of the table, springs integrally formed thereon, an auxiliary axle supported by said springs, and auxiliary feed rollers on said auxiliary axle adapted to coact with the main feed rollers to advancepaper over the table when the table is released from a depressed position to cause actuation of said operating means. l r

In a paper feed device thecombination with a pivoted writing table, of friction feed means, a ratchet mechanism connected with the feed means, a bell crank for operating said ratchet mechanism, and a bar pivotally mounted on the table and connected with" said bellcrank, said bar mounted to be -operated by'the table to cause. operation of the bell crank and the ratchet mechanism whereby the friction feedmeans is operated to 1 feed paper over the table. r
6. In a device of the class described, a pivotally mounted spring controlled table normally held in a raised position, paper carrying means supported on the table for supplying paper to be fed over a. portion of said table, friction feed members for receiving said paper: therebetween, a ratchet mechanism, a'bell crank, a ratchet pivoted thereon, a spring connecting said bell crank With said ratchet, a link pivoted on said bell crank, abar pivoted on said table and having one end pivotally connected With said link, a notched stationary arm, and a notched head on the other end of said pivoted bar engaged with the notched end of said stationary arm.
7. The combination With a \vriting'table, of main feed rollers for feeding paper thereover, bracket plates pivoted on the sides of said table, said bracket plates having slots therein, screws engaging through said slots and engaging said table to hold the bracket plates in an adjusted position,springs secured to said bracket plates, an axle supported by said springs, and auxiliary feedrollers on said axle for co-action with s'aidrmain feed rollers to feed paper over the table;
