These stopfportions against the disk pack. The disks are retained against advancement, however,. except on actuation of the releasing mechanism, by means of a panof retaining dogs 1616 that are pivotally mounted on a slot 17 inthe shaft 9 and which are yieldingly held in extended position bya 'sprlng ias shown infFig. 10 to engage the face of. the
adjacent disk. Each disk, however, isiprovided at opposite sides of the central opening, therein, throughwhich "the shaft'9 extends, with notches 18 which w ll allow, the
, disks, when the shaft is rotated to bring the dogs in regis'tration therewith, to; pass over the latter and to be advanced along the shaft by means of the pressure exerted againstithe disk pack by the spring 15.
It will be stated here, and it is an important feature of construction, that the notches 18 of the successive disks, when the latter are properly in set position, are offset angularly from each other an equal amount, so
that but one disk can be released and advanced with each individual movement of the releasing mechanism. ,The present-construction provides that the notches 18 of the individual disks, when in"set posit on, be offset from those of the nextlfollowing disk an angular distance of sixty jdegrees continuing always in the same direction,-so
that rotating the shaft throughsixty degrees after the releasing of the firstjdisk will efi'ectthe releasing ofthe'secondvdlsk and sixty degrees morewill release the third disk and so on until all are released and ad-v vanced to position for the casting of a1 type slu The releasing mechanism, which is shown best in Fig. 3, comprises lever 20, pivotally mounted at its forward end by means ofa pin 21 to extend rearwardly therefrom along the outer side of the frame plate 3. This lever has a rearwardly turned arm 22 which, at its end, has attached thereto one end of a rod 23 which extends to the opposite end of the machine where it islikewise swingingly suspended by means of a link 24;this latter link being pivotally fixed to a pin 25, as shown in Fig. 1, and swings along the outside of the frame plate 1.
The rod 23 extends through 'slots 26 in the plates 2 and 3 and horizontally through the" lower part of the -machine closely be- --neath the arms of the key board or selecting -.meehanism. The-selecting mechanism comprises the key arms 28 which are pivotally mounted-anthem inner ends on a cross rod {30 and which extend forwardly from the ma- LChine;- -an d;at their ends are equipped with character designating keys 31. Normally these arms are'held'in raised position, as shown in Fig-.2, and against the cross bar 5 by individual springs'32' which are fixed thereto and in afcross plate 33 fixed on the 'baseplate 1.

"It willbe understoodfrom the above description that the depression of any of the character sel'ectingkeys 31 willmove its supporting-arm-28 'a ainst'the cross rod 23 to swlng the [latter ownwardly and,pthrough the link 35,-armsi '36an d pawl 37 engaging with theratchetwheel "38,to1 partially r0 tate'theshaftQ. The present construction provides that-the movement of; the lever'20 be' suflicient to cause rotation of the shaft 9' through anint'erval of slightly more than by-selective operation of the character keys, will release the disks 8 successively to head vancedto'line'forming position. l
After each ,movement of.;the advancing mechanismby depression of the selecting keys, thelever .20 and associated parts are returned to; normal position :by meansof a spring '40'that isfixed at one end to the lever and at its P13081138 end to 'the frame .plate"3,.as sho wnjin Fig.3.
"successively depressing the character selecting keys not only effects the successive releasing of the disks 8, but also effects the selecting of the matrices corresponding to the keys selected, so that intelligible lines ma be formed. This is carried out by the fol owing means:
Fixed to the central fr-am spaced relation thereto, frame 42, and 'pivotally mounted between this "frame and its supporting member at intervals corresponding to the angular spacing of'fthe matrices of the disks 8, are swinging stops1j43, each of whichcomprises an offset central portion 44 and a crank plate 4 in arm'45 at its end. These crank arms are connected by links 46 each with one of the :sixtydegrees with each operation of a char- ,acterselecting key and that such rotation,
is a semi-circular key arms 28 in such mannerthat depression of the arms will cause thestops to be swung i upwardly so that the offset portions 4&4- vthereof will. be positioned adjacent the periphery ofthe adjacent disk 8 and in such position as to be engaged by the stop mem; here 12 or" the disks, when. the latter are released and rotated on the shaft 9.
V parent then that depressing the .a?"charac-' i For the purpose of better, explaining the function of these parts',l will assume that the first three matrices of the disks 8, as shown in'Fig. 2, will -respectively formthe letters a,? 'b and c. I have given these parts the reference numerals 10, 10
and 10. Also that the first three stop .members 43, d3? and 43 are controlled respectively by the character keys 31 bearing the letters a, b, and,c. It is ap ter key will swing the stop 43 outwardly and that shouldthe diskB'thenbe rotated,
in the direction of the, arrow, until its stop portion 12 engaged the "stop'4c3 the matrix 10 will be positioned slightlyWithin-the rod 13. It is also apparent that depres-- sion of the 0 key will likewise actuate thestop t3 and that the c forming matrix of the released disk, when the latter is revolved so that its-stop 12 engages the stop 43,will be alined with the a matrix of the first disk. Likewise, successively and selectively depressing any o the other keys the dogs 16, they are free to be rotatedjto' bringthe selected matrices into line forming position. v
Rotation of the disks afterthey are, re-
leased is automatically effected by means of a spring arm 46, Fig. 2, that is fixed, at
one end, to a pivotally mounted arm 47- andat its opposite end has an inturned point 48 that seats against the forward side of the stops 12. The arm 4:7 is fixedly mounted on the inner end of a shaft 51 which extends revolubly through the frame plates' l and 3 and. which at its-- outer end has a crank arm 52 fixed thereto, Fig. '3, whah is in turn connected by a link 53 t5 the outer ends ofthe arms '36; the

The latter is secured at its lower end to a i V end plate 3 and whichmay be heated electrically, or otherwise, to maintain the metal in a molten conditlon. VJ 1th1n the pot-1s a vertically disposed'cylinder' 81' into which A pumptube 82eX+ tends slidably through the cover of the pot,
which, at its outer end, opens into a valved V the metal maylflow;
cup 83, and at its lower end is equipped vwith a; piston 84 operable downwardly within the cylinder to force charges of molten-metal upwardly through the tube into the cup from which it is discharged through the link 87 connects with the lever and cup 83,
at its oppositeends, in such manner that depressing the forward end of the lever will move the pump rod and piston downwardly. When the lever is released, the parts are returned to neutral position by means of a spring 88 fixed at its opposite ends to the lever and to the frame plate 3, Fig. 3.
' After the metal has been discharged into the mold box, the latter is swung upwardly away from the matrices, to position as shown in Fig. 2, where the slug is automatically released or discharged from thebox onto a receiving chute 90 along which it may silde from the machine.
Pivotally mounted within the mold is a lever 91 having an extended crank arm 92 adapted, when the mold is swung upwardly, to engage a cross bar 93 extended between the frames 2 and l in such manner as to cause thelever to engage the slug and press it from the mold. The lever is then moved to normal position by a spring 9% as shown in Fig. 7.
After the line has been cast, the disks are returned to set position. This first requires that stops 12 of all the disks be alined so that they may be moved along the shaft 9 between the rod 18 and bar 45. The means whereby this is done consists of an arm 95 that is fixed to a rotatable disk 96 mounted concentrically about the end of the shaft 9 just within the frame end plate 2. This arm 95 has a laterally extended portion 97 overlying the disks, as shown in Fig. 2, which may be moved by rotation of the disk 96 to engage the stops 12 and move them all into alinement against the rearward side of the rod 13 so that they may then be moved bodily to position as shown in Fig. 5.
The means whereby the arm is rotated and the disks moved back to set position consists of a knob 100 that is carried at the outer ends or three rods 101 which extend slidably through the disk 96 and at their inner ends carry a plate 102 adapted to engage the disk pack.. The knob serves as means for rotating the arm 95 and also for moving the disks to set position.
Assuming that the differentparts are so constructed and assembled, operation of the machine would be asfollows:
Starting with the disks in set position, as shown, in Fig. 5, the operation to form a line of words, successively depresses the also revolves the shaft proper character selecting keys and with the depression of each key, the shaft 9 is partially rotated, as beforedescriben, to re lease the forward disk from set position and the stop 43 connected with this particular key is actuated to stopping position. Actuation of the shaft rotating mechanism 51 to move the l? to throw the spring 46 to rotate the stop 12 or the released disk against the stop 43 to properly position the selected matrix,
and the bell crank lever 65 is actuated. to
move thedisk onto the locking'bar 60. T is operation continues until the line is filled, when the mold box is moved downward to receive the line of matdces as shown in 7. Depression of the lever 86 then moves the tube extended from the metal pouring cup 83 into the box opening and metal is discharged into the box to cast the slug.
The box is then raisedto initial position and the slug is discharged into the chute 90,
The disks are then reset by first drawing the bar 60 outwardly to release the dis :sfor rotation on the shaft, and by turning the knob 100 to cause the arm end 97 to engage and aline the stops 12. The pack is then moved bodily inwardly, by inward pressure on the knob, over the yieldable dogs 16 to initial position where they are ready for another similar operation;
Having thus described invention, what I claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
