Be it known that we, RICHARD H. CRUM- METT and JOSEPH B. lVAGGoNnR, citizens of the United States, residing at Monterey, in the county of Highland, State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brushes, of which the following is a specification.

Our invention relates to improvements' in brushes, and it consists in the combinations, constructions and arrangements herein described and claimed.

An object of our inventionV isto provide a brush having the bristles detachably held in connected relation to a handle so that the bristles may be removed and replaced when worn or for any other cause.

A. further object of our invention is to provide a brush of the character described which affords facilities for securely holding detachable bristles without the use of glue or like material.

A still further object of our invention is to provide a brush of the character described which is relatively simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and thoroughly practical commercially.

Other objects andv advantages will be apparent fromthe following description, considered in conjunction with .the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of va brush embodying our invention, 1

In carrying out our invention, we provide a head or bristle holder which comprises two complementary sections 1 and 2, respectively.

The section 2 is substantially of U-shape, and includes a web portion 3 and parallel ianges L -4. The inner wall of the web por tion 3 is cut-away, as indicated at 5, for part ofthe length thereof to co-operate with a cut-away portion G inthe inner or confronting face of the holder section in providing a. socket which is adapted to receive the doubled intermediate portion 7 of bristles-8 which are folded intermediately upon themselves as clearly shown.

The return portions of the doubled or folded bristles are spaced from each other by a flat spacing 4member 9 which extends transversely of the bristles and is provided in its opposite faces with longitudinal grooves 10 receiving the binding wires or threads 11 which encircle the return portions of the bristles.

The co-operative sections 1 and 2 of the bristle holder are held in clamping relation to the folded intermediate portion of the bristles by means which will now be described. Such means include a substantially U-shaped latching bar 12 having the web portion thereof extending transversely of the outer face of the section 1 and being secured to the latter by rivets 13 or like fastening means so that the parallel arms or end portions of the clamping bar straddle the sides or flanges 4 4 of the section 2. The iianges 4-4l of the section 2 are provided with aligned slots 13 13 which are right angular in form and extend inwardly from the outer edges of the flanges approximately midway to the juncture of the Hang-es with the web 3 and then extend longitudinally of the flanges in the direction of the rearward end of the bristle-receiving socket, being fashioned at their rearward ends to provide aligned seats 14-14 for the end portions of a rod 15 which is projected between the return portions of the bristles at the juncture of such return portions with each other. The rod 15 is provided at its opposite ends with heads 16 16 which are of greater diameter than the width of the slots 13 13 so that any appreciable axial movement of the rod 15 relatively to the section 1 and to the bristles 8 is precluded when the folded intermediate portion of the bristles with the rod projecting therethrough is inserted between the flanges 4 4 with the end por- 9 tions of the ro 1er-14. .e

The parallel end portions of the latch bar or strip 12 have lateral slots or notches 17 17 extending therein from the edges thereof proximate to the forward end of the bristle-holding socket and in position to engage with the projecting ends of the rod 15 -betweenthe flanges 4 4 and the heads 16 16 when the rod 15 is engaged with the seats 14k-14. It will be obvious that the bristles 8 `willbe held against displacement from the'holder when the sections 1 and 12 are arranged in clamping relation to the folded .intermediate portion of the bristles 15 engaged with the seats in the manner described, and the sections 1 and 2 are held against separation or movement apart because of the engagement of the latching bar 12 with the end portions of the bar 15 projecting from the slots or seats of the langes 4-4. @ur invention provides means for preventing the section 1 accidentally disengaging the section 2. To this end, the confronting faces of the section 1 and of the web portion 3 at the rear ofthe bristle-receiving socket are oppositely inclined to diverge toward their rear ends, as indicated at 18 and 19, respectively, and to engage with a wedge 20 which may be inserted between the portions 18 and 19 of the section 1 and the web 3 to prevent such rearward movement of the section 1 relatively to the section 2 as would be necessary to disengage the parallel arms of the latching bar 12 from the rod 15. The inclined faceslS and? 19 are co-operatively recessed or grooved at 21 and 22 respectively to accommodate a portion of a rod 23 which extends through an axial bore 24 of the wedge member 20, the bore 24 being continued through a boss 25 of the circular con` tour which extends rearwardly of the outer face of the wedge member. The rod 23 is provided at its one end with a hook 2G which is adapted tobe extended between bristles at the juncture ofthe return portions of the latter and engaged with the rod 15 which extends transversely between the return portions of the bristles, as hereinbefore stated. Therod 23 is screw-threaded at its opposite end, as indicated at 27, for engagement with fthe screw-threaded portion of the walls of a socket'28 extending 'axially' in a handle 29. The socket 28 is counterbored, at 30, to receive the boss V25 so that the one end ofthe handle abuts the rearward or outer face of the wedge 20v and tends to force the latter. inwardly between the sectionsY 1 and 2 as the handle isscrewed upon the rod 23, therebyy camming the' rearward ends of the sections 1 and 2 away from each other and correspondingly forcing the forward ends of the sections 1 and 2 toward each other so that the sections 1 and" 2 will be securely held against movement relatively to each other and the return portions of the bristles 8 will be held 'to protrude from the-bristle holder in adjacentjuxta-posed relation, as illustrated in Figuresl and 2.

In order to remove the bristles for replacement or other cause, the handle 29 is unscrewedl so as to permit the section 1 to be moved rearwardly, thereby disengaging the parallel arms of4 the latch member 12 from the projecting ends of the rod 15, whereupon the section 1 may be separatedA from the section 2. Thev rod l5 and the bristles may then be moved' forwardly as a unit until the rod 15 jhas been displaced from the slot 13. The bristles will thus be detached from the section 2 and may be replaced by other bristles or by the same bristles after the latter have been cleaned.

It will be observed that the flanges 4-4 of the section 2 are of greater width at their rearward ends than at their forward ends, being inclined regularly, and that opposite notches 3131 are provided in the edges of the [langes 4-4 at points slightly rearward of the seats 14-14.

It will thus be apparent that we provide a brush which can be used for a relatively great length of time at a slight cost since the bristles thereof can be replaced when worn without there being any necessity ot replacing the other parts of the brush. Moreover, thebristles can be readily removed and replaced for convenience in cleaning the same and the life of the brush is thus extended beyond that of an ordinary brush. Another advantage attained by our invention is that the brush can be used without impairment in service for which a brush having the bristles thereof secured by glue or the like to a head or handle cannot be used without occasioning the loosening of the bristles.

Obviously, our invention is susceptible of embodiment in forms other than that in which illustrated in the accompanying drawings, `and we, therefore, consider as our own all modifications and adaptations thereof which fairly fall within the scope of the appended claims.

lVe claim:

1. A brush comprising bristles folded intermediately to provide two similar return portions, a bristleJ holder having a socket adapted to receive the doubled portions of said bristles, said bristle holder comprising two separable sections, one of which is substantially U-shaped in cross sectional contour, the lianges of said U-shaped section having opposite slots therein, a rod extending between the return portions of the bristles at the doubledv part thereof and being adapted to rest adjacent to its ends in the slots of said flanges, means carried by said second holder section for engaging the projecting ends of said rod to hold the bristle holder sections in clamping relation to the doubled portion of the bristles, a rod extending between said holder sections, and engaging `at its one end with said irst mentioned rod, a wedge member slidable on said second rod and being insertible between said holder sections at the rearward ends of the latter, and a handle-receiving the projecting portion of said second rod and being adjustable longitudinally of the latter to force the wedge between the holder sections or to release the wedge, as and for the purpose set forth.

2. In a brush, bristles folded intermediate their ends to provide two similar relll) turn portions, a bristle holder lcomprising two separate sections, and a rod extending through the bend portion of the bristles between the return portions of the latter, said bristle holder sections having means with which the ends of the rod are releasably engageable to hold said sections clamped against opposite sides of the return portions of the bristles, and to hold said sections in connected together relation.

3. In a brush, bristles folded intermediate their ends to provide two similar return portions, a bristle holder comprising two separate sections, a rod extending through the bend portion of the bristles between the return portions of the latter, said bristle holder sections having means with which the ends of the rod are releasabl7 engageable to pivotally connect said sections together intermediate their length and to maintain the bend portion of said bristles between the forward portions of the b-ristle holder sections, a wedge member insertable between the rear portions of said sections to cam the latter apart and to thus cause the forward portions of said sections to grip said bristles, a handle abutting said wedge, and means adjustably connecting said handle and said rod for connecting the latter with the bristle holder and for preventing displacement of said wedge member from position between said bristle holder sections.

4. n a brush, bristles folded intermediate their ends to provide two similar return portions, a bristle holder comprising two separate sections, a rod extending through the bend portion of the bristles between the return portions of the latter, said bristle holder sections having means with which the ends of the rod are releasably engageable to pivotallv connect said sections together intermediate their length and to maintain the bend portion of said bristles between the forward portions of the bristle holder sections, a wedge member insertable between the rear portions of said sections to cam the latter apart and to thus cause the forward portions of said sections to grip said bristles, said wedge member having a bore extending longitudinally therethrough, l

a second rod extending through said bore and having a hooked end engageable with said first named rod, and a handle adjustably engageable with the outer end portion of said second named rod and'adapted to abut said wedge at the outer end of the latter.
