UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM W. MIOKS, OF. ELMIRA, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN PIPE WRENCHES AND CUTTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. i49,944, dated April 21, 1874; application filed January 27, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM W. MloKs, of Elmira, New York, have invented a Pipe- Wrench, of which the following is a specification:
The invention relates to an improved implement adapted to operate as pipe wrench and cutter by the combination of a clamp with a screw-threaded stern, a reversible perforated block with mortises for reception of griping-jaw and cutter, and a handle which is adjustable on said stem, as hereinafter fully described.
The clamp Ais V-shaped on the inner side, which comes in contact with the pipe, and has a round screw-threaded stem, 0, that passes through a block, B, (provided with a gripingtool, E, and cutter I and enters a handle, L, which is bored and screw-threaded for the purpose. By turning the handle L in one direction or the other on the clamp-stem O, the distance between the clamp and block B may be increased or diminished to accommodate different sizes of pipe. The block B has a mor tise or slot in the corner M, in which the tenon of the griping-jaw E is pivoted by means of a pin, and in which it has suflicient play to allow it to take a new hold on the pipe when.- ever the handle L is vibrated for that purpose. The tenon or shank of the cutting-tool F fits in a mortise, K, in the opposite side or end of the block B, and is also secured by a pin, but
. has no play or movement.
When it is desired to attach one pipe-section to another, or to disconnect the same, the jaw E is used. When a pipe-section is to be cut in two, the block B is reversed and the cutter F inserted and used, the handle L being, in either case, adjusted on the stem 0, according to the size of the pipe being operated on.
I thus provide in one simple implement a pipe griping and cutting device, which is as perfectly adapted for either purpose as if not adapted for the other, the separate adjustments being easily and quickly made.
I do not claim the combination of a cuttingtool with a pipe-wrench; but
The V shaped clamp A, having screwthreaded stem 0, the handle L, adjustable thereon, and the reversible block B having mortises M and K to receive griping-jaw and cutter, all combined and arranged to operate as specified.
WILLIAM W. MICKS.
