TOY MUSICAL INSTRUMENT.
Application filed August 1, 1922.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, ANDREW IzoLD, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Camp Meade, in the county of Anne Arundel and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toy Musical Instruments, of which the following is a specification;
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in wind musical instru ments particularly servicable as a novelty and a toy for'the amusement of children.
The primary object of the invention is to generally simplify and improve devices of this kind and to provide a novel toy which will effectively furnish amusement for the younger set.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for regulating the flow of wind or air from the inflatable air container to the sound producing diaphragm or reed of the instrument so that proper flow of air may be had to obtain sound devoid of shrillness and whereby the supply of air may be conserved for permitting a somewhat long playing of the device from one supply of air to the inflatable air container.
With the above general objects in view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists of the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawing and claimed.
In the drawing, wherein like reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a wind musical instrument constructed in accordance with the present invention and with the agitator shown inflated.
Figure 2 is an enlarged fragmentary view partly in side elevation and partly in sec tion showingthe upper portionof the infiatable air chamber and the manner of attaching the supply and outlet tubes thereto,

.Referring more in detail to the several views, the present device embodies an inflatable elastic air bag or container provid ing an air chamber and denoted by the numeral 5 formed with a reduced upper end portion as at 6 which is provided with openings diametrically opposite each other as at 7 and 8 and from which extend tubular nipples 9 and 10 respectively adapted for reception of and attachment to the supply tube 11 and outlet tube 12 respectively.
The mouth piece or supply tube 11 has its inner end fastened as at 13 in the nipple 9 and is provided at its inner end with a check valve 1d so arranged as to permit the free flow of air into the air bag 5 while preventing such air to blow outwardly through the mouth piece 11 in a well known manner. The outlet tube 12 is secured at its inner end as at 15 in the nipple 10 and may be flared in trumpet shape at its outer end as at 16 if found desirable for producing a desirable appearance.
Within the inner ends of the outlet tube 12 is a cup-shaped control valve 17 which is axially rotatable in the tube 12 within such limits as determined by the length of a circumferential elongated slots 18 provided in the outlet tube 12 and through which opposed pins 19 project, said pins being rigid with and projecting radially outwardly from the valve 17 as clearly shown in Figs. 1, 6 and 7. The inner end of the outlet tube 12 is preferably provided with an end wall 20 having slots or openings 21 therein adapted to cooperate with similar slots or openings 22 provided in the end wall of the valve 17. Obviously, by bringing the openings 21 and 22 in alinement, a full flow of air will be allowed to pass from the inflatable air bag 5 while a slight rotation of the valve 17 will more or less cut off this flow as desired. The pins 13 will engage the end walls of the slots 18 either when the valve is completely open or completely closed.
Outwardly of the valve 17, the outlet tube 12 has a centrally apertured plug 23 fastened therein which has a resilient strip of material 21 stretched across its central opening so as to act as a reed or diaphragm for producing sound When the an-flows ire-m the air container 5. In using the device the valve 1-7Jis closed and the inouth piece 11 is :placed in the mouth whereupon the inflatable air bag 5 is inflated to the desired extent by lo-lowing into the mouth piece. When it is de- 7 sired to play the instrument the valve 17 is vslightly "rotated until the proper sound is produced through the necessary amount of air escaping from the far-r container '5 i and acting jupon the reed .24.
