ALL-WEATHER GUARD FOR OUTSIDE DOORS.
Application filed February 11, 1922.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMEs A. ANDREWS, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Alleather Guards for Outside Doors, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in weather strips and weather guard devices for the outside doors of houses and other buildings and has for its primary object the provision of a simply constructed, inexpensive and highly efficient all weather guard which will not only positively prevent wind, rain, snow, etc, from blowing or leaking under a door but will likewise exclude dust, sand and the like.
Another object of the invention is to provide a weather guard of the character de scribed which will be strong and durable, comparatively inconspicuous and so arranged that it will take up little or no room and not in any way interfere with the ordinary opening and closing operation of a door. I
A further object is to provide a weather guard such as above noted which may be readily and easily adjusted to fit upon doors of various sizes and to compensate for various clearances and also for Wear or shrinkage.
Another object is to provide a weather guard of the type defined in which a guard strip or member is automatically moved into positive and tight contact with the threshold and floor when the door is opened, thru noyel means, part of which means is located on the threshold or lower ends of the sides of the door frame in an out-of-theway and inconspicuous position.
The invention possesses other advantages and features some of which, with the foregoing Will be set forth at length in the following description where I shall outline in full that form of the invention which I have selected for illustration in the drawings accompanying and forming a part of the present specification. In said drawings I have shown one form of the construction of my invention, but it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to such form since the invention as expressed in the claims may be embodied in a plurality of forms.

Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on the plane of line 4l.-4: of Fig. 2 with the door and associated parts in position, however, as shown in Fig. 3.
The embodiment of the invention shown in the accompanying drawings comprises a thin, light guard plate 5 or member formed of weatherproof metal an inch or more wide and as long as the door 6, is wide, said plate 5 being hinged to a base or supporting member 7 attached to the outside. face of the door just above tne lower edge thereof. The member 7 is vertically adjustably attached to the doorby screws 8 extending thru slots 9 in said member. The member 7 has a front portion 7 extended downwardly and outwardly from the upper secured portion thereof so as to be spaced outwardly from the door whereby an in wardly ofiset hinge barrel 10 on the plate 5 may extend under said member. A hinge pin 11 is extended thru the barrel l0 and through end pieces 12 carried by the base portion 15. Thus, the upper edge of the guard plate is disposed rearward'of and under the member 7 and the lower edge of the member 7 overlies said guard late so as to protect the hinge and eXclu e rain, dust, wind, etc.
The guard plate 5 is adapted to engage the threshold 12 well in front of the door, said guard being curved outwardly and downwardly from its upper end.
To normally hold the/guard plate 5 in and return the same to an inoperative position there are provided arcuate pins 13 carried on said guard and extending into small recesses 14L formed in the door. The base portion 15 of the member 7 which is flat against the door. is extended over said re cesses and has openings 16 therein thru which the pins extend. Expansion springs 17 are mountel on the pins and engage the portion 15 and plate 5 so as to normally hold the latter in position clear of the threshold.
To cause the guard plate to automatically move into operative position when the door is closed there are provided on opposite ends of the threshold and against the sides 18 of the door frame, cam members 19 having inclined or cam faces 20 so arranged as to en gage the curved outer face of the guard plate and force said plate downwardly. The cam members 19 are secured by screws 21 and have upper end portions 22 curved on their inner faces so as to conform to and overlie the member 7 and engage the door above the latter whereby a guard against entrance of the elements is provided for at the ends of the guard device.
It will be seen by reference to the drawing and foregoing description that my device may be readily and easily attached to a door without necessitating any change in the construction of the latter except for the cutting of the small recesses 14 and that when the door is closed the guard 5 engages the cam faces 20 and is automatically forced into a position such that the lower edge thereof will closely engage the threshold and be held in such position, whereby a tight weather and dust proof joint is provided. When the door is opened the springs will move the guard into a position clear of the threshold and floor, as shown in Fig. 2.

1. An all weather door guard comprising a base portion adapted to be secured to the outer face and adjacent the lower edge of a door,

An all weather door guard comprising a base portionadapted to be secured to the outer face and adjacent the lower edge 01 a a upper ed of the guard plate, a hinge pin extending thru said barrel and supported by said base portioin a plate on said base portion extending downwardly and outwardly in front of the upper edge of said guard plate, spring means tending to hold said guard plate in position clear of the threshold of the door a member adapted to be mounted adjacent one end of the threshold so as to engage and force the guard plate into engagement with the threshold when the door is closed and means for vertically adj ustably securing the base portion to the door.
