TES
HENRY B. TAYLOR, OF MGNTREAL, QUEBEC, CANADA.
DEVICE FOR ATTACHING PICTURES AND THE LIKE TO WALLS.
Application filed November 28, 1922. Serial No. 604,031.
To all whom it may concern:
lie it known that l, IIEN'RY l3. TAYLOR, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and resident of the city of Montreal, in the Province of Quebec and Dominion of Canada,
have invented certain new and useful Improveinents in Devices For Attaching Pictures and the like to Walls, of which the following is a fall, clear, and exact descrip tion.
I This invention relates to new and useful improvements in devices for attaching pictures or the like to a wall, and the object of the invention is to provide a simple device which will be easily attached to a picture, photograph or the like without defacing same.
Another object is to provide a device which will be easily and cheaply manufactured.
A further object is to provide a device which will be very easily packed into small space.
In my invention, I provide an open-ended envelope with a slot cut in one face. The outside of the other face is provided with an adhesive, such as gum, glue or the like. Into the space between the inside faces of the envelope I place the flat head of a pin with the shank of the pin engaging with the slot. The device can then be gummed to the back of the object to be hung and the pin pressed into the wall. This will prevent any defacement to the exposed surface of the hanging article. It also provides a means whereby the article may be hung without exposing unsightly pin heads on the face of the hanging object. It also provides a means whereby no piercing of the picture is required to hold the same in position.
It still further provides, by means of the slot, for the easy and quick removal of the picture from the wall without 1n ury to either the picture or the hanger.
In the drawings which illustrate the invention:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the device showing the slotted face.
Figure 2 is a sectional elevation of the device taken on the line 22, Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a sectional plan taken on the line 3-3 Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the device attached to the hack of a picture.
Figure 5 is a front view of one modification of the device.
Referring more particularly to the drawlugs, 11 designates an envelope with an open end 12, the other end and sides being closed. The face 13 is smeared over with an adhesive compound 14, which when wettcd or heated will be easily attached to a frame, photograph or the like 15. The other face of the envelope is provided with a slot 16 which extends from the open end to a oint a short distance from the top or close end. The end of the slot may be cut or made to form a wedge-shaped entrance 17 for the easy insertion of the shank 18 of a fiat headed pin, the head 19 being placed in the pocket of the envelope. The slot may, if desired, be tapered from the open end u wards, from a width slightly less than the diameter of the shank to a width equal to the diameter of the shank 18. In Figures 1, 2, 3 and 4, I have shown my preferred form of invention, and in Figure 5 I have shown one modification of the device in which the back of the picture is used as the plain or closed face of the envelope. The edges 20 of the slotted face are gummed or otherwise secured to the back of the picture or the like.
The operation of the device is as follows, the envelope containing the pin head with the pin protruding through the slot as shown in Figure 2 is fixed to the object to be hung by means of the gummed face. The object is then placed against a wall and pressure applied to the point directly in front of the head of the pin until the pin is forced into the wall. If desired, the envelope itself may be first attached to the picture to be. hung and then when the picture is to be hung a pin may be inserted in position in the envelope, its head between the two inside faces and the shank protruding through the slot, and the object may then be applied to the wall as described. When the form shown in Figure 5 is used it is preferably applied to the object without the pin, which may be inserted in position when the picture is to be hung.
It is easily seen that if the envelope, or the single faced form as shown in Figure 5, are attached to the object without the pin, leaving the pin to be inserted when desired, a very compact hanging means which will have no obstructions is provided.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is z 1. A picture holder comprising an envelope having an adhesive l'aee on one side and a slot in the otherside. and a large headed pin. the head of said pin engaging with the inner taees of the envelope and the shank with the sides of the slot.
:2. pi'eture holder aeeording to elaim l, in whieh tne walls of said slot eonverge in wardly from eaeh end to an intermediate point.
2%. In a pieture holder, the eombination of an envelope comprising front and rear wall members united along opposite sides and one end. one of said members being provided on the outer face with means for attaching same to a pieture. the other member being provided with a slot extending inwardly from the free end and a pin having a head positioned between said members with the shank of the pin projeeting outwardly through said slot for engagement with a wall or other support.
4. The holder reeited in elaim 3. wherein the slot is restrieted at an intermediate point to retain the shank of the pin thereln.
5. As a new artiele of Immularture, a pieture supporting attachment (ompivsing an envelope tonsisting of two paper sheets having their edge portions united. exeept along a relatively short area wheie the said edge portions are left unattaehed to provide the mouth of the envelope, one of said sheets being formed with a slot extending inwardly from the free edge portion thereof.
In witness whereof, l have hereunto set my hand.
HENRY B. TAYLOR.
