UNITED STATES JOSEPH PEYSER, OF MOUNT VERNON, NEW YORK.
snnivrnve moon.
Application filed. ()ctober 29, 1921.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JosErH Pnrsnn, a citi- Zen of the United States, and a resident of Mount Vernon. in the county of Nestchester and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Seanr ing Tools, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates generally to seaming mechanism and has for its main object and purpose the provision of means whereby more time will be given in which to perform the in and out movement of the seaming tools.
In devices of this character it is, under certain conditions, desirable to use two first operation seaming tools and two second operation seaming tools. To avoid undue crowding of the parts I employ two separate concentric seamer cams, one for actuating both of the first operation seaming tools and the other for actuating both of the second operation seaming tools.
The invention may be embodied in a construction in which the container to be seamed rotates and the seaming tools are relatively stationary, or, as in the present case, the container may be stationary and the seaming tools may revolve around the work. In either event, the two seamer cams have an effective circumferential displacement of one revolution with respect to the seamer head, which condition may be obtained either by having the seamer head stationary and the cams making one revolution to each seaming cycle, or by rotating both the seamer head and cams, say, in the proportion of fifteen to sixteen revolutions to each cycle of the machine.
In the accompanying drawings, the invention is disclosed in a concrete and preferred form in which Fig. 1 is a vertical sectional view on the plane of irregular line 11 of Fig. 2 through a seamer head embodying the inven tion.
Fig. 2 is a top plan. view of the parts shown in Fig. 1 partly in section.
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view on the plane of line 38 of Fig. 1.
1 indicates a chuck which is the complement of the usual pedestal (not shown) and which in this case is non-rotating. 2 is the seamer head rotated by means of suitable Serial No. 51 1,343.
gearing (not shown) and carrying first and second operation seaming tools 3 and 4.
Two concentric annular cams 5 and 6 are '9 and 10, the members of eachset being diametrically opposed to each other, and the members of the two sets being at right angles to each other. Each of said guides contains a slide 11 which carries a seaming tool. Each of the slides carries a cam roller, two of the cam rollers 12 engaging with first operation seaming cam 5 and the other two cam rollers 13 engaging with the second operation seamer cam 6.
During rotation of the parts the two 0ppositely disposed first operation seaming tools 3 will first move inwardly and seam the work, the second operation seaming tools 4 being in their outermost position; and thereafter the two second operation seaming tools 4 move inwardly to complete the seaming operation while the first operation seaming tools move outwardly. During the period when the cams move the tools into neutral position the container is removed from engagement with the chuck and another container placed in position. The parts 14 of the second operation seamer cam which are adjacent to the active portions of the cam are rendered elastic by cutting away a portion of the metal as shown to permit the second operation rollers to pass over the extra thickness of metal at the longitudinal seam of the body of the container. Any suitable means may be used to adjust the position of the seaming tools to permit the machine to be employed to seam different sizes of containers. In the present instance each seaming tool is carried by an eccentric member 15 seated in an opening 16 in slide 11, and by turning this eccentric member the seaming tool can be adjusted. The means for efiecting turning movement of the eccentric member consists of a sleeve 17 connected with the eccentric member by means of pin gether. Spindle 21 of the cam roller is carried by a plate 22 removably seated in recess 23 of the slide.
I claim:
1. seaming mechanism comprising: a seamer head, two diametrically opposed first-operation seaming tools slidingly mounted on said seamer head, two diametrically opposed second-operation seaming tools also slidingly mounted in the seamer head but at right angles to the first-operation seaming tools, two concentrically disposed seaming cams disposed within the seamer head, separate connections from the two first-operation seaming tools to one of said cams to operate said first-operation seaming tools in unison, and separate connections from the two second-operation seaming tools to the other of said cams to operate the second-operation seaming tools in unison.
2. seaming mechanism comprising: a

chuck, a seamer head, two first-operation seaming tools, two second-operation seaming tools, two concentrically disposed seaming cams arranged in the same plane, means for actuating the first-operation seaming tools from one of said cams and means for actuating the second-operation seaming tools from the other of said cams.
3. Seaming mechanism comprising: a chuck, a seamer head, a plurality of seaming tools, two concentrically disposed seaming cams arranged in the same plane, means for actuating one of said seaming tools from one of said cams, and means for actuating another seaming tool from the other of said cams.
Signed at New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, this 27th day of October 1921.
JOSEPH PEYSER.
