FOUNTAIN PEN Filed April 4, 1922 6' v 'f l Y Patented June 3, 1924.
FOUNTAIN" een.
.ppilication'iiledlprily 4, 1922. Serial No. 549,650.
in' fountain pens and has for' its'- object a means or device for controlling the flowI of in'kfto th'e pen; point or nib.
The' invention* is illustrated in the light of a fountain pen having-an ink-containing' reservoir" consisting of a collapsible' sac' to which" type of fountain pen thejinfvention is especially applicable, and in which- Figure 1 is" a View of the fountain pen partly' in lbng'itudii'ial' section and partly in side elevation. l l y Fig'. 2 shows 'an enlargement of the sectional part-of the" fountain pen shown inv F ig. 1'. f. I
Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the controller plug to which special reference will later be made. v l j l u Fig. this a lbngit't'ldi'nal lsection of a sliglrtly modified construction, and
p Fig.' 5 is an end elevation of the controller plug' lshown in Fig. 1.
Referring to the' drawings V 1- represents the bodyy or barrel of the fountain pen. 2 isr the flexible ink-containing sac or reservoir within the body. The open end 3 of the sac is attached tothe tubular end 4 of a' sec-tion or' piece' 5 it'tin" within the end of the body or barrel. 'If'ie section 5' preferably has a snug sliding lfit within the end o'f the barrel to permit' of the ready insertion of the sac, and is cemented to the barrel. 6 is the pen-Carrying section, This section is" applied to the end of the barrel by an end 7 thereof fitting within' theV sectioii 5 y and being threaded thereto, thereby per'initti'ng.A of the easy removal of the section 5. 8 is' the pen point or' nib and 9 the feed bar. The feed bar is providfe'sd with a channel 10 throughwhich ink is dire'eted onto the peri point, therink communicating with the channel by passage out of the reservoir through the interior of Vthe sections 5 and 6 to the rear end of the feed bar and thence into the channel. Communicat'iii Vfr'in out" ofthe reservoir to the channel 8 oft'hef feedy barand pen point is controlled by a valvula-n plug.l 11. This plug. lies back ofthe feed; bar and is adjustable withinl the pen"-carry-ing.v section 6 by means 60 of a threaded' connection 12 between thev sectionland plug. The plug is'provided with a channel 18 throughv it. The plug isl` ad'- justable in" relation to therear end ofi the feed barwhich forzms'A as it were a va'lVeseat 65 for the plug. When the plug. is'positonedby its adjustment to have contact with the rear en'd ofltlie-y feed` bar all communication is broken between'tlie' reservoinithe channel 13of1 the plug and the' channel 8 of the feed 70 bai and pen point. Upon the adjustment of the plugaw'ay from the end: of the feedl bar any amount of space 14 determinate. upon suchy adjustment may separate the plug from the ei'ifd of the feed bar, such space 75 affording connection betweenv the channel 13 of the plug and the channel 8 of the feed bar, the flow of inl. being thereby' deter'- mined inasmuch as the flow willv depend upon the adjusted positionof the plug and the extent of space separating the plug from the end of the feed' bar. For the purpose of better obtaining a graduated amount of open-ing between the plug and the feed bar or an entire closure of such opening, if it be desired, the rear" end' of the feed bar is preferably provi-ded with al conical' extension 15 and the plug is provided with a corresponding recess 16 by `which it lits over the extension. The plug isfadjuste'd from its 90 inner end or facel 17 which is provided? with a slot 18 forrece'iving any suitable tool for turning the plug. The adjustment of the plug may be obtained upon the removal of the penecafirying section '6" from the barrel 95 when the plug becomes easily accessible for adjustment. j
In- F ig. 4 a slightly 'modified' construction is shfown. ln the first place there is provided a pen-carrying section Q0 having a: sliding 1W) lit within tlie end of the barrel to which it` maybe cemented and provided with a tubular' end 21 to which the sac is' secured. The pen-carrying section isl 'provided with a valvular plug Q2 adjustable" within it the 1155 saine as the plug l1 in 'the' construction first described and functioning in precisely the same manner. lThe plug 22', however, is provided with an extension or thuinbpiece 23 on 'the inner end thereof which extends 110 inte'thejehainber ef these@ and which peref 'the-plug being 'rames en the removal of the pen-carrying section and sac with it on the flexing of the sac. While this latter construction has certain advantages, the construction first described is perhaps preferable inasmuch as access may be had to the plug for adjusting it without the removal of the sac or 'the undoing of any cemented joint.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States:-
l. Ina fountain pen, the combination comprising the body yof the pen, a pencarrying section having normally a fixed relation to the body of the pen thoughA removable therefrom, a pen point, a channelled feed bar, and a valvular plug arranged back of said feed bar and adjustable on said pen-carrying section whereby it may cooperate with said feed bar when adjusted to control communication to the pen point out of the body of the pen.
2. In. a fountain pen, the combination comprising the body of the pen, a pencarrying section having normally a fixed relation to the'body of the pen though removable therefrom, a pen point, a channelled feed bar, a valvular plug arranged back of said feedbar and adjustable on said pen-carrying section whereby it may co operate with said feed bar when adjusted to control. communication to the pen point out of the body of the pen, and means whereby the adjustment of said plug may be obtained on the removal of said pen'- carrying section from the body of the pen.
