MEANS FOR SECURING TAGS TO PACKAGES.

To all whom it may concern.

Be it known that I, EDWARD C. RIDDELL, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Spokane, Spokane County, State of Washington. have invented new and useful Improvements in Means for Securing- Tags to Packages, of which the following is a specification.

This invention pertains to means for attaching a tag directly to a package, and has for its object to provide a means for such attachment without the use of a string, wire or the like and which will make the attachment in a manner that will permit the removal of the tag without injuring the same. Such an attachment is applicable to securing the tag to a C. O. D. parcels post package.

The invention will be hereinafter particularly described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.

The illustration will be made as applicable to securing a tag to a package for transmission by parcels post.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view of a broken-away portion of a. package with a tag secured thereto by means of the invention, Figure 2 is an enlarged perspective view of a preferred form of fastener used in the construction, Figure 3 is a perspective view of the device complete, Figure 4 is a sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Figure 1 and Figure 5 is a view of the bottom side of the device.

In a detail description, in which like numerals refer to like parts throughout the several views, two flat pieces of fabric, 14 and' 15, are secured together, one on top of the other, as shown in Figure 3. A piece of metal is cut in such a manner that a base portion 12 in the form of an H is provided, with upwardly extending flexible prongs 13. This metal is secured to the portions 14 and 15 as shown in Figure 3, the base portion 12 being secured between the portions 14 and 15 and the prongs 13 extending upwardly through the portion 15. The underside of the portion 14 is gummed, as at 16, for adhesive attachment to the package.

In Figure 1 is shown the application of the device, wherein the same is shown as secured to the package 10 by means of the Serial No. 653,050.

gummed surface 16. The prongs 13 are extended through the opening 17 in the tag 11 and then bent over to a position horizontal with the surface of the tag 11, whereby the attachment becomes complete. By 1nanual- 1y straightening the prongs 13 to a position at right-angles tothe base 12, the tag 11 can be removed without injury thereto.

lVhat is claimed is:

1. A means for attaching a tag directly to a package, comprising a flat fabric, gummed on one side, and having a fastener with a base in the form of an H with projections therefrom, for detachably connecting a tag thereto, attached to the other side of said fabric.

2. A means for attaching a tag to a package, comprising a flat fabric, gummed on one side, another flat fabric secured to said first named fabric on the side opposite the gummed side, and a fastener, having a base in the form of an Hand upwardly extending flexible prongs with its base secured between the said two fabrics, and the flexible.

3. The process of attaching a tag to a. package, comprising gumming a -flat fabric on one side, placing a fastener having a flat base in the form of an H and a pair of flexible prongs at right angles therewith on the side of said fabric not gummed, with the base of said fastener lying fiat on said fabric and the prongs extending outwardly therefrom at right angles to said fabric, placing another flat fabric, having an opening through the center, over the first named fiat fabric with the base of said fastener between the two fabrics and the prrngs extending through said opening in the last named fabric. then securing the assembled mechanism to the outer surface of the package'by means of the gummed surface on the first named fabric and then inserting the prongs of the fastener through the tag to be attached and then bending the prongs of the fastener. in opposite directions to positions substantially horizontal with the base of the fastener.
