CALENDAR.
Application filed January 6, 1923. Serial No. 610,967.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Crnis'rnn W. BURN- HAM, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Oneida, county of Madison, State of New York, have made a certain new and useful Invention Relating to Calendars, of which the following is a specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, which forms part of the same.
This invention relates especially to, merchandising calendars in which the calendar front or face which may have any suitable artistic or advertising matter and also specific or general advertising statements, is provided with one or more merchandising dates or statements which are preferably interchangeable and arranged in connection with an exhibiting opening or device by which interchangeable time period or'other general merchandising statements may be exhibited, preferably in distinctive color or type so as to correspond with the adjacent merchandising date or statement with which they are to cooperate. For this purpose a suitable opening may be arranged in the calender front and a movable change disc, horizontal endless tape or other movable exhibiting member may be arranged on the back of the cal endar so as to support the calendar if desired and also to make visible through this openin the desired number of days, weeks or other time period or general merchandising statements in connection with the merchandising date or statement on the front of the calendar which may be advantageously placed below this exhibiting opening.
In the accompanying drawing showing in a somewhat diagrammatic way an illustrative embodiment of this invention:
Fig. 1 is a front view Fig. 2 shows interchangeable merchandis ing or time statements which may be used on the calendar Fig. 3 is a rear view of the calendar, and
Fig. 4 is a front View of the detached change disc therefor. I
The calendar may be made of any suitable material and construction and for many purposes it is desirable to form the calendar of heavy cardboard on which the advertising or other material may be printed or otherwise reproduced. As shown in Fig. 1, the calendar front 1 may have hinged or connected thereto the folding supporting wings 2 which may be joined to the calendar front as by the cloth or other flexible hinge strips 18 shown in Fig. 3. In this way the. supporting wings may during shipping be fold-v ed inward over the lower part of the calendar front, while in use these wings may be swung outward into some such supporting position as is indicated in Fig. 1 so as to support the calendar front on'a table or counter j and contribute to the'general design features thereof. This calendar front may have any 05 desired artistic design printed or pasted. thereon so as to make the calendar attrac-, tive in connection with its general colored or other design features, and specific and general advertising statements of any desired character may be applied to the calendar front and wings so as. to make a desirable advertising exhibit for the general trade for which the calendar is designed, such as the jewelry or silverware trade in the case of this calendar, which is particularly designed for use in connection with silver table ware.
At the upper or lower part of the calendar front in connection, if desired, with such ad'- Q vertising statements, an exhibiting opening such as 3 may be formed preferably above" or adjacent a merchandising date or statement such as 4:, which is preferably in some distinctive color or type of lettering. A
change disc or movable exhibiting device such as 9 may be arrangedin connection with this exhibiting opening so as to make visible therethrough one or more of the time period or other merchandising statements such as 5 which are on this disc or member and which are preferably printed in correspondingly distinctive color or type to the merchandising statement 4:. This change disc 9 may,
as indicated inFigs. 3 and 1, be detachably pivoted to the calendar front or body as by the disengageable pivot connection 17, the
two ends ofwhich may be forced together and then this change disc 9 may be withdrawn from the pivot and reversed before again pushing the pivot through the opening 8 in the center 7 of this disc so as to exhibit the indications on its opposite side. Where such a double face change disc is used it is desirable to have an inner locating set of designations 11 which correspond to the outer exhibiting time period orother merchandising statements 5 on the opposite side of the disc, see Figs. 3 and i. In the same way the inner set of designations 1Q corre- 11o spond to the outer exhibiting designations 12.011 the other side of the disc so that any of these time period or other statements may be brought into alignment with the exhib1ting opening by bringing the inner locating designations such as 10, or 11 into engagement with a suitable indicator on the back of the calendar. This indicator may com prise the arrows 14: on the body 15more or less extending or bridging over the outer part of this change disc'while an indicator support 13 is glued or otherwise attached to the calendar back so as to support this in dicator properly and yet allow 'the disc to be removed or replaced, as desired. This arrangement makes possible the consideration of the various time period or other merchandising statements by inspecting the back of this change disc where practically all of the indications or statements which can be used by reversing the disc are visible directly while the inner locating designations are all visible which correspond to the regular time period or other statements which can be shown through the indicating opening by merelyturning this change disc and without reversing the same by removing it from its pivot. In the position of the parts shown in Figs, land 3 the indicator is aligned with the, inner locating designation 16 as shown in Fig. 3, which automatically brings the corresponding exhibiting designation or time statement 5 in front of the exhibitingv opening 8 in the calendar front shown in Fig. 1. For some purposes it is desirable to have still other interchangeable or detachable time period or other merchandising statements such as the pasters or labels 6 shown in Fig. 2 which maybe pasted on this change disc to replace other indications thereon when desired.
In the use of this calendar the appropriate merchandising date or statement is used in connection With the exhibiting opening or portion and several interchangeable dates or statements such as 4 shown in Fig. 2 are pro vided so as to be attached to the calendar front and cover the gift or shopping periods, such as Christmas, Thanksgiving, Easter, etc.; also more general merchandising statements such as For wedding gifts, may also be made up in label or paster form so as to be applied to the calendar front in the desired distinctive color or type to cooperate with'the exhibiting opening or portion. The change disc may, as described, exhibit the desired number of days, weeks, or other time period in connection with the appropriate merchandising date on the calendar front and in this Way the purchasing public can be, reminded of the remaining period before Christmas, for example. If desired, however, the more general merchandising statements on the change disc or member may be brought into connection with the opening such as Shop early, See our full stock,
Select silver gifts, Buy here, Buy silverware, which may be used either in connection with the merchandising dates such as mentioned, or in connection with the more general merchandising statements such as For wedding gifts, or For birthday gifts, which'may be exhibited on the face of the calendar in this connection. In this way the dealer or tradesman has a merchandising calendar which can be used for a long period of time'or. indefinitely and has sufficient interchangeable features so that it can be altered appropriately to correspond with various dates or periods throughoutthe year and have general advertising or selling value in connection with the type'of merchandise for which the general advertising and other merchandising statements are adapted; This is naturally of distinct advantage from the advertisers standpoint, since his specific tails of which disclosure the invention is not of course to be limited since what is claimed as new and what is desired to be secured by Letters Patent is set forth in the appended claims. p I
