STENCIL APPARATUS.

in single or multicolor may be applied' toi smooth or rough surfaces by hand, means being employed for ensuring accuracy in the application of the design and repeats l thereof along the said surface.
My invention includes certain improvements in the construction, form and arrangement of the several p-arts of the apparatus, whereby the above object may be effectively carried out.
A practical embodiment of my invention is represented' in the accompanying drawings, in which- Fig. 1 represents in top plan the apparav tus in use.
Fig. 2 represents a side view of the same. Fig. 3 represents an enlarged detail section taken in the pla-ne of the line III-III of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 represents a detail section taken in the plane of the line IV-IV of Fig. '3.
The table 1 of the apparatus may have a coverin of felt 2, over 'whii an` oiloloth or other impervious material 3 is stretched. A side guide 4 extends along oneedge of the table. The sheet material 5 to be stenciled may be a fabric, such for instance as a plain or pile fabric, and it is smoothly stretched o-n the table parallel to the side guide 4, and it may be temporarily fastened in p'osition along its side edges by pins 6, the feltcoverin `2 on the table serving to provide a sligtly yielding support for the sheet material which is to be steniled, either in single or multicolor.
A separate stenciling frame` 7 may be rovided for each design land color, w 'ch frame is preferably rectangularI and is of the desired size.
The bottom of the frame is herein shown .the stencil sheet. .of the design to be painted or stenciledonto as comprising an open fine mesh fabric; such for instance as boltin cloth, forming a stencil sheet 8, provided with a border 9 of firmer and stronger material, such as oilcloth, by means of which the stencil sheet may be tightly stretched and firmly secured to the frame.
The stencil sheet may have the desired vdesign placed thereon either by sketching the design directly onto the stencil sheet or by placing the sheet over a previously prepared design andv then tracing the same onto The portion lor portions the sheet material 5 is left open and the balance of .the surface of the stencil sheet lis coated with a material impervious to the paint to be used in stenciling the surface of the said sheet material. To ensure the utmost accuracy in the `po sitioning of the frame on the sheet material t0 be stenciled, I provide coacting adjusting means between the frame and the side guide 4 of the table as follows:
A plurality of adjustable stops 10 are s e-` cured in suitable spaced relationship along the side guide 4, corresponding to the repeats of the design, each stop having upper and lower branches 11 and f2 overlappin the top and bottom of the side guide 4. set screw 13 passes through the lower branch 12 into engagement with the bottom Vof the side guide for clamping the stop in its adjusted position thereon. A longitudinally disposed adjusting screw 14 is threaded into the upper branch 11 of the stop. The stencil frame is provided with 'a positioning arm 15, arranged to engage the'headof the screw 14 to properly position the frame longitudinally with respect to the material to'be'stenciled.
Two laterally arranged adjusting screws 16 and 17 arel threa ed' into the stencil frame adjacent the sideguide 4, the heads of which screws are arranged to enga e the side guide for positioning thestencll ame laterally with respect to the material to be stenciled. A By turning the screw 14,^th'e longitudinal position of the stencil frame can be. adjustedl v @Il to the finest degree and by turning the screws 16 and 17, the lateral position of the frame can also be adjusted to the finest degree. This is very important as it enf sures the utmost accuracy in the painting of the design on the material being stenciled.
The means for aVA plying the paint 4onto the material through? the open design in the stencil sheet comprises a fountain 18 supported by and slidable along thel stencil frame With the discharge slit 1n the bottom of the fountain in -contact with` or close proximity to the stencil sheet, thus permitting the deposit of the paint through the open design in the stencil sheet onto the surface being stenciled, as the fountain is moved back and forth alon the frame.
In the present instance t e ends of the fountain are provided with arms 19 and 20 which rest in grooves 21 and 22 forming tracks along the frame. Suitable handles 23 may be provided for manipulatingthe fountain. Thelength. of the dlscharge slit in the bottom of the fountain is pref-` erably the Width of the stencil sheet so. as,4
to take care of any design formed therein. It will be noted that this fountaln is readily removable when so desired.
In the use of my invention, the sheet material to be stenciled isv stretched and tem-' porarily secured on the table and the stencil frame is placed on the table with the stencil sheet resting upon the material to be stenoiled, the arm 15 of the frame being brought into engagement with the head of the screw 14 of the stop 10 and theheads of the screws 16, 17, brought into engagement with the side guide 4 of the table. rllhe said screws 14, 16 and 17 may then be manipulated to accurately position the frame with' respect to the material to be stenciled. rlhe fountain 18 is then manipulated to apply the paint to the material through the open design in the stencil sheet. As soon as the design has been stenciled onto the material, the frame is moved along until it is properly placed in its next osition for repeating the stenciling lof the esign.
1n color Work it will be understood that any number of these stencil frames may be used, one following the other in the stenciling of the design or designs until the Work is4 completed.
lt is evident that various changes may be made in the construction, form and arrange- .ment of the several parts without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention; hence, I do not Wish to limit myself to the particular embodiment herein shown'and described, but
What I claim is:
1. In an a paratus of the character described, a ta le on which the materialA to be stenciled is temporarily secured, a stencil ganarse sheet carrying frame adapted to be placed on the material, a paint applying device carried by the frame and movable back and forth along the stencil sheet, means for positioning the frame With respect to the material for original, and repeat operations, and means for accurately adjusting the frame longitudinally and laterally.
2. ln an apparatus of the character described, a table on which the material to be stenciled4 is temporarily secured, a stencil sheet carrying frame adapted to be placed on the material, a paint applying device carried by the frame and movable back and forth across the stencil sheet, and means for positioning the frame with respect to the material for original and repeat operations, com rising a side guide and coacting devices on t e frame and side guide, said coacting devicesbbeing adjustable, one with respect to the other for 'adjusting the frame longitudinallyand laterally.
3. In an apparatus of the character described, a table on which the material to be stenciled is temporarily secured, a stencil sheet carrying frame adapted to be placed on the material, a paint applyingdevice carried by the frame and movable back and forth across the stencil'sheet, a side-guide, stops placed along the side-guide aud devices carried by the frame for coaction with the side guide, and stops for positioning the frame with respect to the material to be stenciled, said stops being adjustable along the side-guide to correspond to the design repeats.
4. In an apparatus of the character 'described, a table on which the material to be stenciled is temporarily secured, a stencil sheet carrying frame adapted to be placed on the material, a paint applying devicel carried by the frame and movable back and forth across the stencil sheet, a side guide, stops spaced along the side guide, adjustable screws carried'by the frame for engagement with the side 'guide for adjusting the frame laterally' with respect to the material, an arm carried by the frame and an adjustable screw carriedv by the stop, engagin said arm for adjusting the frame longitu inally with respect to the material.
