To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Crmnnns W. SIIAKTLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Middletown. in thecounty of Butler and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Beater Rolls of Paper-Mill Machinery or the like, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements in beater rolls of paper mill machinery, having particular reference to an improved method of mounting the fly bars on the beat er rolls.
As herein shown and described, the means employed to effect the improvements of the invention consist in various forms of interlocking devices adapted to be shrunk onto the beater roll heads in engagement with the fly bars whereby to interlock the same with the heads. The arrangement provides for mounting the fly bars singly, or in sets, so that each bar or set of bars can be mounted, adjusted and replaced independently of the other bars. f
The principle of the invention lends itself readily to suitable modifications of construction with reference to the shape or character of the interlocking devices. In the various practicable forms in which the invention can be applied the arrangement tends, toward simplified construction, with the further advantages gained in maintenance by the independent mounting of the In. the accompanying drawings:

Fig. 5 is a detail end view illustrating a further modification of the construction shown in Fig. 2.
As shown in Fi 1 and 2 the usual features of construction of beater rolls consist of the shaft --1, ends or heads -2, head retaining flange 3, intermediate supports --4, fly bars 5 and wood filling --6, the means shown for interlocking the fly bars with the beater roll heads being features of the present invention.
In the construction shown in Figs. 2 and 3, each fly bar is mounted independently, the means employed for mounting the bars consisting of a series of lugs 7, arranged circumferentially on the outer faces of the beater roll heads 2, the lugs, as shown, being cast integrally with the heads, and defined by depressions -8, in the metal, the over-all face surface of the heads, being substantially flush; slots -9 formed in the outer edge of heads --2, intersecting the lugs -7, and adapted to receive the ends ot the fly bars --5; interlocking bands --10 adapted to be shrunk over lugs -7 and to engage the ends of the fly bars by means of slots 11 formed therein, whereby each fly bar is independently secured in the opposite heads of the beater roll, being supported between ends by intermediate members 4, and is adapted to be mounted, adjusted and replaced independently of the other bars.
The construction illustrated in Fig. 4 is essentially the same inprinciple as that shown in Figs. :2 and 3. As shown the lugs 12 and shrink bands -13 are triangularshaped, each lug and band being adapted to engage two fly bars. The advantage in this consists in the fewer parts required, and in quicker mounting of the fly bars on the beator roll by arranging them in sets.
In Fig. 5 a modified construction is shown which is different in form but not essen- -tially different in principle from that shown in Figs. 2 and 4. As shown the modified construction consists in depressions -1t, formed in the outer face of the beater roll heads 2, each of the depressions being arranged to intersect two of the head slots -9, and to be aligned with slots -11, of oposite fly bars 5; the interlocking memers 15, which are shaped to fit depressions 14, being shrunk into the depressions to firmly interlock the fly bars with the beater roll heads.
From the drawings and the foregoing detailed description the underlying principle of mounting the fly bars on the beater roll heads by means of interlocking devices of any suitable shape shrunk on lugs or in depressions formed on the beater roll heads, and engaging the fly bars, singly or in sets, in a manner which serves to interlock the samsi1 with the heads, will be readily understoo a cluding a beater roll head,
Having described my invention, I claim:
1. In a beater roll the combination, including a beater roll head, a lug on the face of the head and a peripheral slot in the head intersecting said lug, a fly bar having an end supported in said slot, and a band shrunk over said lug engaging the end of the 2y gar-and interlocking the same with the 2.
