Be it known that I, HARRY J. (human,
a citizen of the United States of America,
residing at Davenport, in the county of Scott and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjusting and Reversing Mechanisms for Clothes Wringers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in adjusting and reversing mechanisms for clothes wringers.
The objects of my invention are, first, to provide a simple, easily manufactured and easily controlled apparatus b which the operation of the wringer and t e position of the wringer relative to the washing machine or other apparatus, ma be controlled by a single'lever and secon to provide a simple, inexpensive apparatus to manufacture.
I attain these objects by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in
Figure 1 is the side elevation of my control apparatus, showing the gears and clutch in dotted lines; Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the casing or housing of my apparatus, but showing the gears and clutch in full lines, the housin being drawn in section onthe line Y Y of iigure 3; Fig. 3 is a detail showing the upper part of the housing in vertical cross section and showing the attachments of the adjusting lever; Figures 4 and 5 are details showing the arrangements of the adjusting lever and Figure 6 is a detail view of the lower end of levers, 1 and 12, looking upward from below; Fig. 7 is a detail of the lever 12, and circular plate, 27 formed integral therewith.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
In my apparatus, a tube, 24, which encloses a driving shaft, is secured to the washing machine or other apparatus in any manner desired. Upon the tube, 2 1, a housing, 2, is rotatably mounted, preferably by a sleeve, 23, extending downward into the tube, 24:, or in any other suitable manner. W The driving shaft extends upwardly into this housing and is secured by suitable bearings mounted therein in the usual manner. A lever, 1, is fulcrumed upon a bolt, 11, V which passes through a circular plate, 10, formed inte a1 with the lever, 1, and is se cured in a slmilar circular plate, 27, formed integral with a lever, 12. The bolt, 11, should be set up ti ht enough to secure close juxtaposition of t e plates, 10 and 27, but loosely enough to allow the lever, 1, to revolve upon the bolt, 11, through the arc shown in Figure 1.
The lever, 12, is fulcrumed upon a pin, 28, which asses through lugs, 9, formed integral wit the housing, 2.

The inner end of the lug or post, 8, rojects between the clutch collars, 19, and operates to slide the clutch upon the shaft, 20.

Likewise, when the handle of the lever, 1, is thrown to the right or left as shown in Figure 1, the lugs, 5, form a detent whi h no prevent the lever, 1, being thrown tra nsversely to the housing, .2, suficiently' to disengage the latch, 12, from its seat, 16, and in this way whenever the wringer is in operatiori, it is locked against rotation upon the sleeve, 23.
The lower portion of the housing, 2, is
provided. with a collar, 13, which rests upon, a corresponding collar, formed integral with the upper end of the tube, 24. A notch is formed in the collar, 13, which permits the entrance of the lower end of lever, 12, therein and a plurality of notches, 16, are provided in the collar upon the upper end of the tube, 24, into one of which the lower end ofthe lever, 12, will enter when the housing is revolved so as to bring the lever, 12, into juxtaposition to such notch. In the description and claims, for convenience I refer to the motion of the lever, 1, as shown inFigurel, as its longitudinal motion and to its motion as shown in Figure 4 as its transverse motion.
The bolt or set screw, 11, forms a fulcrum for the longitudinal motion of the lever, 1, and the pin, 28, forms a fulcrum for the transverse motion of the lever, 1, and for the motion of latch lever, 12.
As the bolt on set screw, 11, fastens the lever, 1, securely to the lever, 12, it is obvious that when the lever, 1, is operated transversely, the lever, 1, combined with the lever, 12, operate as a single lever.
It is obvious that the form and roportion of the difierent parts of my device may be varied to a large extent without departin from the spirit of my invention.
t is also obvious that my device is applicable to many machines and appliances other than wringers and I do not restrict my claims to clothes wringers.
I cl:
1. In a controlling mechanism for wringers and other machinery, the combination with a shaft housing, ofa gear housing rotatably mounted thereon, a latch lever fulcrumed upon the gear housing, notches cut in the upper end of the shaft housing corresponding to the lower end of the latch lever and adapted to receive same, and a clutch control lever secured to the latch lever and moving simultaneously therewith when operated transversel of the housing, but secured to the latch ever by a set screw or bolt which operates as a fulcrum and allows the clutch lever to be operated longitudinally of the gear housing upon the set screw as a fulcrum.
2. In a controlling mechanism for wringers and other machinery, the combination with a shaft housing of a gear housing rotatablg mounted thereon, gears secured upon a sha mounted in the gear housing and a clutch slidingly mounted upon the shaft between the gears, a latch lever fulcrumed upon the gear housing, notches cut in the upper end of the shaft housing corresponding to the lower end of the latch lever and adapted to receive same, a clutch control lever secured to the latch lever and moving simultaneously therewith when operated transversely of the housing, but secured to the latch lever by a set screw or boltwhich operates as a fulcrum and allows the clutch lever to be operated longitudinally of the gear housing upon the set screw as a fulcrum, and detents formed upon the housing which look the clutch control lever against longitudinal motion when the latch lever is disengaged from its corresponding notches or seats.
3. In a controlling mechanism for wringers and other machinery, the combination with a shaft housing of a gear housing rotatably mounted thereon, gears secured upon a shaft mounted in the gear housing and a clutch slidingly mounted upon the shaft between the gears, a latch lever fulcrumed upon the gear housing, notches cut in the upper end of the shaft housing corresponding to the lower end of the latch lever and adapted to receive same, a clutch control lever secured to the latch lever and moving simultaneously therewith when operated transversely of the housing,
but secured to the latch lever by a set screw or bolt whiclr operates as a fulcrum and allows the clutch lever to be operated longitudinally of the gear housing upon the set screw as a fulcrum, and detents formed upon the housing which lock the clutch lever against transverse motion while the clutch is engaged with either of its adjacent gears.
4. In a controlling mechanism for wringers and other machinery, the combination with a shaft housing of a gear housing rotatably mounted thereon, gears secured upon a shaft mounted in the gear housing and a clutch slidingly mounted upon the shaft between the gears, a latch lever fulcrumed upon the gear'housing, notches, cut in the upper end of the shaft housing corresponding to the lower end of the latch lever and adapted to receive same, a clutch control lever secured to the latch lever and moving simultaneously therewith when operated transversely of the housing, but secured to the latch lever by a set screw or bolt which operates as a fulcrum and allows the clutch lever to be operated longitudinally of the gear housing upon the set screw as a fulcrum, detents formed. upon the housing which look the clutch control lever against lon 'tudinal motion when the latch lever is disengaged from its corresponding notches or seats, and detents formed upon the housmemes ing which look the clutch lever against transverse motion while the clutch is engaged with either of its adjacent gears.
5. In a controlling mechanism for wringers and other machinery, the combination with a shaft housing of a gear housing rotatably mounted thereon, gears secured upon a shaft mounted in the gear housing and a clutch slidingly mounted upon the shaft between the gears, a latch lever fulcrumed upon the gear housing, notches cut in the .upper end of the shaft housing correspondclutch control lever, a compression spring mounted in the handle of the clutch control lever exerting pressure downwardly upon the pin, a plurality of circular seats formed in the housing adapted to engage the lower end of the pin and secure the clutch control lever in position when so engaged.

In .a controlling mechanism for machinery, the combination with a base having a housing rotatably mounted thereon, of a latch lever fulcrumed upon the housing, seats formed in the base adapted to receive and engage a portion of the latch lever, a control lever fulcrumed upon the latch lever moving simultaneously therewith when operated transversely of the housing, but secured to I the latchlever b a pivot which operates as a fulcrum and a lows the control lever to be operated longitudinally of the gear housing upon the pivotas a fulcrum.
