Be it known that I, JOHN V. SULLIVAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fremont, in the county of Sandusky and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gloves of which the following is a specification.

The present invention relates to retaining devices for gloves and mittens, and consists in the combinations and arrangements of @elements hereinafter disclosed and particularly set forth in the accompanying claims.

With the usual make of gloves and mittens the wrist portions thereof are too flimsy and consequently do not hold their shape if they be used in any kind of manual work, and this'fault isespecially true where the wrist portions are of knitted material.

As a consequence of this the glove does not hold to the hand, and there is the further disadvantage that dirt finds easy access to the interior of the glove, which requires its removal, at frequent intervals. This condition obtains especially with coal miners, who

are constantly required to remove their loves to shake out small particles of coal t at work down between the hands and the gloves.

It is believed that practically all classes of Workmen nowadays show a decided pref erence for gloves of the leather palm gauntlet type, i. e., gloves having leather palm portions and the backs and gauntlets of which are of canton flannel. The assigned reasons for this are that the palm of the hand of the workmen is that part which needs protection most, if not solely, and it is, therefore, a needless waste of material and money to construct gloves of this kind of all-leather. In other words, the major portion o f the hand and fingers does not require to be covered by leather.

Leather palm gloves have been made, heretofore, just as wide at the wrist as at the wider portions of the hand and are not equipped with any means for holding the glove securely on the wearer. As a consequence of this the glove constantly tends to slip from the hand thereby bringing the gauntlet, which is of fabric, directly over the larger portion of the hand. This ortion of the hand, i. e., the palm and back thereof, is obviously the part most used and therefore subjected to the strain and roughest work.

In addition to the foregoing stated disadvantages there are other and lesser faults to be found with gloves of this type, and to overcome which it is proposed to provide a combination fabric and leather palm gauntlet glove, that is, a glove preferably `of fabric having a leather reinforce for the palm with means for securely holding the same on the hand of the wearer, which may be easily and quickly pulled off the hand, wherein the design is such that the minimum of materials are used and assembled in a way to give maximum service to the glove; and which may be manufactured at a price that will commend itself to those whose work require the constant' employment of gloves of the type' herein referred to.

The glove herein disclosed is proposed as an improvement over the design of glove shown in my Patent No. 1,456,580, dated May 29, 1923.

Referring to the construction in further detail and wherein like reference characters designate corresponding parts in the different views, 4 indicates the palm portion of the glove, 5 the wrist portion thereof, and 6 90 represents the guantlet as shown. The glove is preferably constructed of fabric such as canton fiannel with the palm portion 4 which includes the under surface of the lingers and thumb 7 and 8, respectively, 95 provided with a leather reinforce or protective covering while the entire back portions 9 and 10 of the glove and the gauntlet thereof, are constructed of canton flannel.

.The wrist portion 5 is of considerably less 100 wldth than the body portion of the glove, as clearly shown in Figure 1, to the end that the glove may more properly lit the hand thereby giving ease and comfort to the wearer and for the further reason of avoiding the necessity for needlessly gathering the material of the glove immediately surrounding the wrist portion. Said wrist portion 5 has its palm side provided with a leather reinforce or protective covering formed either by extending the reinforce of the palm portion or independently thereof and forming a passage or casing through which the band or strap Il may be inserted to hold the glove, as will be further eX plained.

The band 1l is constructed preferably Vof elastic material and is provided with any suitable buckle l2, or the like, for the purpose of regulating the tension thereof as required. Said elastic band 1l is wholly er:- posed at the back and side portions of the glove as shown in Figures 2 and 3, to the end that said band may be readily adjusted by the wea-rer. The inner portion of the band is, however, concealed wholly within the leather wrist portion 5.

It will therefore be seen that the retaining strap or band is so located and fitted to the glove as to obtain the maximum tensioning about the wrist with no discomfort to the wearer, and that the hand may be easily and Having thus described my invention, what is claimed as new is:

l. A glove having a wrist portion and a reinforce over the palm side of the wrist portion, a retaining band encircling the wrist portion and underlying the reinforce for the wrist portion and otherwise lying wholly outside of the glove, substantially as set forth.

2. A gauntlet glove having a constricted wrist portion and a reinforce over the palm and palm side of the wrist portion, a retaining band encircling the wrist portion and underlying the reinforce for the wrist portion and otherwise lying wholly outside of the glove, substantially as set forth.

3. In a glove having a wrist portion, an adjustable retaining band encircling the wrist portion thereof, the palm side of said wrist portion constructed with an encasing, and said wrist band being concealed within said encasing and otherwise lying wholly outside of the glove, substantially as set forth.

4. A gauntlet glove having a constricted wrist portion,.and an elastic retaining'band encircling the wrist portion thereof, the palm side of said wrist portion constructed with' an eneasing, and said wrist band being concealed within said encasing and other` JOI-IN V. SULLIVAN.
