LOCK FOR FOUNDRY FLASKS.
Application filed November 1, 1922. Serial N'o. 598,307..
To all-whom it may concer/n: n y
Be it known that I, GEORGE F. LOUGHRAN, a citizen of' the UnitedStates, residing at Boston, county of Suffolk, State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Locks for Foundry Flasks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
,This vinvention relates more particularly to locks to fasten together the sides of the ordinary types of molders snap flasks used in metal casting. Due to the fact that these flasks must be handled and operated largely by unskilled labor, fit is necessary to make their construction as simple as possible consistent with the accomplishment of the results desired.
The purpose of my invention is to provide` a lock for one corner of each part or section or the ordinary type of hinged snap flask, which can be easily operated by unskilled labor and which can under no circuinstancesy become accidentally unfastened. The customary` types of locks used on molders flasks have been in many respects unsatisfactory.' It has been found under present working conditions that the locks, which 'have been used, would become unfastened and cause the mold, in the process of being formed, to be injured or entirely spoiled.
Moldingv machines have largely replaced the old method of ramming, sand into the flask b-yhand. These molding or jarring machines areconstructed so as to cause the flask, which is placed thereon, to be violently jarred up and down for the purpose of forcing the sand to properly adjustv itself to form the mold.` It is vunder such conditions particularly that the old types of locks have proved unsatisfactory. My invention, therefore, consists in a lock, which not only can be easily engaged and disengaged, but which will not become unfastened under the above described working conditions.
The invention will bevfully understood from theY following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, and the novel features thereof will be pointed out and clearly defined in the claims at the close ofthis specification.
In the accompanying drawings, Fig. l is a plan view of one part, or section, of an ordinary type of hinged melders fiask with my locking device attached thereto. y
Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing the lock of my invention.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a two-part molders flasln the cope and drag being placed together in the manner employed in making molds. My invention is shown attached to each of these parts or sections.
Similar letters of reference indicate the same partsy in all of the figures.
A, B, C, and D, denote the sides of one part'or section of a melders flask, the sides A and B being permanently. attached together at one corner and the sides C and D being attachedin a similar way at the'diagonally opposite corner. In Figure l, the sections formed by sides A and B, on the onehand, and C and D, on the other, are hinged together at E.
Attached tothe corner of 4each part or section of the flask, diagonally opposite the hinged point E, is shown, in Figure l. my locking device, indicated as F. AThe locking device F consists of two lug members (if` and H. These4 lug members are attached, by means of'screws or other suitable means, to the sides B and C respectively, of each part or section of the flask. The lug` member G has two lugs a and b, which may be Iclearly seen in Figure 2 of the drawing.
The lug member H has also provided thereon two lugs similar to those'attached to the lug member Gr. These lugs are indicated in Figure 2 as c and d. The, lower lug 0 yhas a hole which registers with the corresponding hole in the lug and the lug d has a similar hole which registers with the holeA in the lug a. Ther lug d is also provided with a hole e through which passes a vertical portion of a slidable latchfK. The latch K is provided with a spiral springL, around the" above mentioned vert-ical portion, and a pin m. The spring L isfsup y lugs are brought into register, as above pointed out, the pins g and f will enter the holes in the lugs ci and a, and c and b, respectively.
It is clear from the above description that when the latch K .is so engaged in the lugs a, Z9, c, and d, no amount of jarring, due to the placing of the device on a molding machine, will be sufficient to cause the locking device to become disengaged. rI his desirable result is accomplished by reason of the fact that the latch is held rmly in an engaged position by the spring L and, in addition, is assisted by the force or' gravity which tends to keep the bolts or pins j and g so engaged.
It is also to be observed that my latch, because of the presence of the two pins or bolts, forms a more .secure lock for each part or section of the iiasks than has previously been provided. It is clear that the two adjacent sides of each part or section, which are to be locked, are very satisfactorily held together because the pin or bolt g engages the lugs d and a near the upper edge of the adjacent sides and the pin f engages the lugs c and l) near the lower edge. These bolt portions g and j, being parts of the same latch member may be simultaneously released by a relatively small movement of the latter, this movement being readily permitted f even in the case of assembled flask sections,
as shown in Figure 3.
Modifications in the details of the device described may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
I-Iaving thus described the invention, what I claim as new is l. In a molders flask, the combination with the four sides and corners, of a hinged connection at one corner, and a lock at the diagonally -opposite corner, said lock comprising lng members secured to adjacent r sides of said flask respectively, and a verticallyslidable bolt movable to engage and disengage both of said lug members.
EZ.4 In a molders flask, the combination.
with the four sides and corners, of a. hinged connection at one corner, and a lock at the diagonally opposite corner, said lock comprising lug members secured to adjacent sides of said flask and provided with lugs, each lug of one lug member having a hole registering with a corresponding hole in a lug of the adjacent lug member, and a vertically slidable latch adapted to enter said registering holes.
3. In a molders flask, the combination with the four sides and corners, of a hinged connection at one corner, and a lock at the diagonally opposite corner, said lock comprising lug members secured to adjacent sides of said flask and provided with lugs,
each lug of one lug member having a hole registering with a corresponding hole in ka lug of the adjacent lug member, and a vertically slidab-le latch, guided in one of said lug members, and having upper and lower pins adapted respectively to engage the up# per and lower lugs of the said lug members.
4. In a molders flask, the combination with the four sides and corners, of a hinged connection at one corner, and a lock at the diagonally opposite corner, said lock comprising lug members secured to adjacent sides of said iiask and provided with lugs, each lug of one lug memberhaving a hole registering with a corresponding hole in a lug` of the adjacent lug member, and a vertically slidable latch, guided in one of said lug members, having upper and lower offset portions or pins, adapted respectively to engage the upper and lower' lugs of the said lug members, said latch having a spring to assist in holding it downward in the engaged position.
5. In a molders snap flask, lthe combination with the four sides and corners, of a hinged connection at one corner, and a lock at the diagonally opposite corner, said lock comprising lug members secured to adjacent sides of said flask and provided with lugs, each lug of one lug member having a hole registering with a corresponding hole in a lug of the yadjacent lug member, and a ver= tically slidable latch guidedin one of said lug` members, having upper and lower offsetportions or pins, adapted respectively to engage the upper and lower lugs ofthe said lug members, said latch having a vertical portion, a spiral spring around said vertical portion, and a pin positioned in said vertical portion, one end of said spring resting `on said pin and the other end of saidspring resting on the lower face of'v one of saidlug `members to assist in holding said .latch downward in the engaged position.
6. In a molders flask, the combination with the four sides and corners, of a hinged connection at one corner, and a lock at Vthe diagonally opposite corner, said lock comprising lug members secured toV adjacent sides of said iiask respectively, and a longitudinally slidable bolt to engage and lock the lug members of the adjacent sides together.
7 In a molders flask, the combination with the four sides and corners, of a hinged connection at one corner, and a lock at the diagonallyopposite corner, said lock comprising lugs on each of two adjacent sides at points adjacent the upper and lower edges thereof and a slidable bolt having portions to lock each of said lugs to a corresponding lug on the adjacent side. y
In testimony whereof I affix my signature GEORGE' F. LOUGI-IRAN.
