Description
v May 6 192.4;
E. A. SCHADE LEVEL'STOCK Filed Aug. 24'. 1922 Patented May 6, 1924.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDMUND A. SCHADE, OF NEW BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE STANLEY I WORKS, OF NEW BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT, A CORPORATION OF CONNECTICUT.
LEVEL STOCK.
Application filed August 24, 1922. Serial No. 583,968.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, EDMUND A. SoI-IADE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New Britain, county of Hartford, State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Level Stocks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to metallic level stocks of the type having a pair of flat straight edge portions connected by a web and with their working faces in parallelism with each other.
The aim of the invention is to provide a level stock of this sort which is simple in construction, light in weight, and wherein the working faces are reinforced and braced in such manner that they are maintained perfectly level and true under all conditions of use and should any undue stress or strain be applied to them.
In the accompanying drawing wherein I have shown for illustrative purposes the preferred embodiment which the invention may take;
Figure 1 is a side view of my improved level stock;
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view .taken substantially on line 22 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1, but showing the stock provided with spirit tubes.
Referring to the drawing in detail, it will be seen that my improved level stock comprises a single or integral casting preferably of aluminum, having a pair of flat straight edges 10 and 11, connected together by a web of novel and advantageous construction. The working faces, 12 and 13, respectively of the straight edges 10 and 11 are suitably milled or otherwise machined to make them perfectly true and in parallelism with each other.
The web which preferably connects the straight edge portions 10 and 11 along their longitudinal median lines has the openings 14 and 15 and provides a pair of flanges, 16, 17, one for each straight edge portion, these flanges being of greatest width at their centers and gradually sloping down towards the ends of the level stock. flanges are of such tapered construction or shape that they reinforce and brace the straight edges and maintain the same perfectly level and true altho undue stresses or strains are applied to them. The flanges, 16 and 17, are connected together at their center as at 18, and at their ends as at 19.
The level stock shown in Fig. 3 is similar to that shown in the preceding figures except that it is provided with spirit tubes, 20, these tubes, in the present illustrative disclosure, being positioned in suitable annulus adjacent to the center of the web and approximately midway between the center and the ends of the level stock.
It will be seen that with the construction described, since each of the flanges is of tapered construction, being of greatest width at their central portions, the maximum strength is obtained with a minimum amount of metal. This means that the level stock may be more economically manufactured and is light of weight while at the sametime it possesses great strength and rigidity enabling it to'be used in cases where it is subjected to excessive strains or stresses.
I claim as my invention:
1. A level stock of the character described having a pair of straight parallelly arranged edge portions each reinforced by a longitudinally extending flange tapering down from its center towards its ends, said flanges being integrally attached at their centers and ends.
2. A level stock formed of a single piece of metal and having a pair of flat straight edge portions in parallelism with each other and a web composed of a pair of flanges integrally attached at their centers and ends, said flanges extending along the median lines of said straight edge portions and being of greatest width adjacent their centers and tapering down towards their ends.
EDMUND A. SCHADE.
