To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Josnri-l S. GREENLEY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of San Jose, in the county of Santa Clara and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lVindow Guides, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates particularly to a guide for the sliding windows of automobiles.
In building enclosed tops for automobiles it is customary to provide sliding windows for both sides thereof. These windows are supported upon suitable hangers and must, of course, be spaced and held by guides arranged at their lower edges and upon the body of the automobile. These guides are carefully made to permit the free movement of the sliding windows therein, and consequently when the automobile is in use the continual weaving of the top causes move ment of the windows which in nearly all cases develops into an objectionable rattle.
It is the object of my invention to provide a guide soconstructed as to automatically engage the window at all times with sufficient pressure to prevent rattling thereof and yet to permit the proper sliding movement thereof. Another object is to provide a guide that can be adjusted from time to time to the pressure required to take up wear due to the continued use of the sliding window.

Referring more particularly to the drawing. 1 indicates a suitable casting adapted to be secured to the upper edge of an automobile body 1 and providedwith upwardly and downwardly extending side flanges as at 2 is aleft side elevation of Figleft side elevation of the the bottom edge of a 1921. 2 and 8 respectively, and end'webs as at 4 and 5 as shown The upper surface of member 1 is sufliciently wide to receive window 6, and the webs t and 5 extend a distance beyond said portion 1 and engage a pin 7. Mounted on pin"? is a plate member 8 having upwardly and downwardly extending flanges 9 and 10 as shown. A. bolt and nut 11 is shown connecting flanges 3 and 10, and a spring 12 is arranged on said bolt between said flange and exerting an outward pressure thereon.
Theresult of this construction is, that by adjustment of the bolt and nut the flange 9 may be adjusted with relation to flange 2 so as to bring to bear upon window 6 just the right pressure to permit its proper sliding movement and yet to positively prevent its rattling in the guide.
The device above described is for a single window only. lVhere a double guide is required for two sliding windows it may be as shown in Figures %5 and 6 in which i body portion 13 is shown provided with an upwardly extending central flange 14 and side flanges 15 and 16 pivotally mounted thereon on pins 17-18, each flange having a downwardly extending portion as 19-20 respectively. A bolt and nut 21 connects flanges 19-20 and a spring 22 is mounted on the bolt between said flanges and exerts an outward pressure thereon. In this form the two guides are adjusted by a single spring and bolt, each guide of course functioning as described in connection with Figure 1.
If so desired in the double construction, a central depending and fixed flange as 23 may be provided and two springs as 2 1-25 arranged on bolts 26-27 as shown in Figure 7. This permits the accurate adjustment of either guide independently of the other guide. In Figure 8 both sides of the device are resiliently mounted, the fixed flanges 2 and 3 being replaced by a plate 28 mounted on pivot 9.
It is to be understood of course, that while I have herein shown and described certain preferred forms of my invention, changes in form and construction and method of operation may be made within the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A sliding window guide oo'ic'ip'rising a body portion adapted to be meuntecl upon a fixed support, upwardly and downwardly extending fixed flanges on one side thereof, a plate pivotally mounted upon said body portion in opposed relation to said flanges, and means inserted between the lower portion of said plate and said downwardly extendingflange for exerting an outward pressure thereon.
2. A sliding window guide comprising a body portion adapted to be mounted upon a fixed support, upwardly and downwardly extending fixed flanges on one side thereof, a plate pivotally mounted upon said body portion inopposed relation to said flanges, and means inserted between the lower portion of said plate and said downwardly extending flange for exerting an outward pressure thereon, and means for limiting the pivflange, movable means arranged thereon in opposed relation to said flange, and resilient means operatlvely mounted to urge said movable means toward said flange.
