UNITED STATES PATENT o FicEg noon 0. man, or 1mm, rmmvuu.
rvrr. an roe mkwmrm Application filed January 9, 1912. Serial 10.195900.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, HUGH C. LORD, a citizen of the United States, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Im-v provements in Type Bars for Typewriters, of which the following is a specification.
is designed to improve the type-bar action. making the type-bar itself yieldin intermediate its ends either by forming t e typebar of spring metal or b jointing the t pebar between its ends. V'here this is one and the bar is sufiiciently 'elding to permit the type end to lagwith the initial impulse of the bar a very much higher velocity of the type end maybe secured at the moment of impact with the platen. This is accomplished, because with the initial impulse of the bar the type end lags between the genpart of the stroke and then as the type-bar end acquires motion centrifugal force begins to assert itself and as a result the type end is accelerated so that at the moment of impact it has reached a position approximately in alinement with the shank of the type-bar and during what might be termed this catching up movement of the type end it has not only the normal acceleration due to the swinging of the type-bar as a whole but also the acceleration incident to the swinging to alinement with a result that there is a very much higher velocity .at the moment of impact and a sharper and more pronounced impact. At the sametime the initial movement of the bar is cushioned, thus relieving the operator of the dead shock of the unr silient bar.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings as follows Fig. 1 shows a side elevation of a typebar action.
Fig. 2 showsa similar view of a modification.
1 marks the platen, 2 the type, 3 the bar, 4 the bar shank, 5 a pivot for the shank, 6 the ordina cam slot in' the shank, 7 an arm of a be 1 crank lever having a pin 8 0pcrating in the slot 6, 9 a pivotal mounting having a bell crank, 10 a slot in the oppoa pin operatthe key lever site arm of the bell crank, 11 ing in the slot and carried by residing at Erie,
This is accomplished 'by tial movement of the bar and moment of im act.
7 impulse 12, 13 a ivotal mounting for the lie lever,
of Orand 14 e key. These parts area dinary construction with the exception of the bar 3 which is formed of resilient spring metal preferably flat wire and is of suflicient resilient? with relation to the weight of the type en of the bar to have a lag as indicated in dash lines with the inisw' into practical alinement with the shank at the In Fig. 2 i e structure that the type bar is made of rigid material and of the parts 3, and 3 and ed at 3. spring 3 is secured to a projection3 on the end of the part 3 and anchored through a perforation 3"011 the shank. With this 7 structure the end 3 hinge with the initial bar proceeds swings the influence of can this alinement of impact.
