Be it known that l, JAMES WV. BAKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Santa Cruz, in the county of Santa Cruz and State cf California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Grate, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to gates and more particularly to improved operating means therefor. The principal object of this invention is to provide a road gate having means for moving the gate across the road by a gravity actuating mechanism.
' Another object of this invention is to provide a road gate having means for opening and closing the same that can be voperated by a vehicle as the same approaches the gate thus obviating the numerous inconveniences occurred when it is necessary to leave the vehicle to open a gate and afterwards close the same.
' Another important object of the invention is to provide a gate of this ynature which is simple and efficient in construction, reliable in operation, durable, inexpensive to construct, and Well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed.
"With the above and numerous other objects in view as will appear ,as the description progresses, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction, and in the combination' and arrangement of parts as'will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For the purpose of illustrating my invention, l have shown in the accompanying drawing that form thereof which is at present preferred by me, since the same will give in practicesatisfactory and reliable results, although it is to be understood that the various instrumentalities of which my invenf tion consists can be variously arranged and organized' and thatv my invention is not l limited to the precise arrangement and organization of these instrumentalities as herein shown and described.

Figure 5 is a detail view showing the trip and crank operated thereby, Figure 6 is a detail view showing particularly the operating lever for the tracks of the gate, and
standards 2 and 3 andthe intermediate standard 4. These standards 2, 3 and 4 are preferably embedded in the ground but, of course, may be supported in any other desired manner. The roadway is disposed between the standards 3 and 4 and in the usual. use of the gate the distance between the standards 2 and 4 would be within an enclosure'. The gate B may be of any general preferred constructiony and the embodiment herewith disclosed is merely given by way of example to illustrate the operation thereof and includes the crossrods 6 braced as at 7 and connected at their ends to the standards 8. These standards 8 project uplwardly from the gate and have journaled in their upper ends suitable rollers 9 which are preferably of the grooved type such as is illustrated to advantage in Figure 7. The track which is engaged by these rollers 9 is indicated generally at C and includes a track lever 10 which is fulcrumed at 11 to the beam 1 between the standards 3 and 4 and the track lever 12 which is fulcrumed at 13 between the standards 2 and 4, The track levero10 is constructed at the end adjacent standard 4 with a slot 14. The track lever 12 is constructed with a slot 15 adjacent the standard 4 while the other end thereof is Vcurved to vprovide an upwardly extending .hooked extension 16. An operating lever 17 4for the track levers 10 and 12 is fulcrumed intermediate its ends to the beam 1 preferably immediately above the standard 44. This lever 17 includes a pair of curved or arcuate arms 18 having projecting pins at their terminals as at 19 for penetrating the slots 14 and 15. From the description as -it has thus far progressed lwill be readily seen `that if the track lever 10 is shifted from the position shown in Figure 1 to the position shown in Figure 2 that the lever 17 will actuate the track lever 12 to the position shown in Figure 2 from that shown iny Figure 1 whereby the two track levers will be inclined in an opposite direc# BIS tion from that shown in Figure 1 so that gravity Will cause the gate to move to an open position. Of course this operation is readily reversed by suitable operation of the lever 10. Particular attention is called to the fact that the hooked extension lt forms a seat for one of the rollers 9 when the gate is in an open position as does one vof the arms 18 of the lever 1T and these act as stops. lt is also to be noted that the various elements are proportioned and disposed so that when the gate is in a stationary position that is either closed or open it Will be properly disposed that is not tilted but positioned so that the standards 8 are in a vertical position and the rods 6 in a horizontal position.
An understanding` of the operating mechanism for the gate about to be described can best be had by particular reference to Figures 3 and 4. A post 25 is disposed alongside of the standard 3 a slight distance therefrom and similar posts 26 and 27 are disposed in alignment with each other and With the post 25 so as to be aligned at iight angles to the alignment of the standards 2, 3 and 4, that is so as to be disposed alongside of the roadway. A pair of levers 28 are fulcrumed to the posts 26 and 27 intermediate their ends, one to each post and the ends of these levers 28 are slotted as at 29.
A' lever 30 is fulcrumed intermediate its' ends to the post 25 and is provided at one end With a pin 31 engaging the slots of the levers 28 at their adjacentends whereby this lever 3() may be actuated by either of the levers 28.
A link rod 32 is fulcrumed to the other end of the lever 30 and is fulcrumed to the outer end of the track lever 10. From the description as it has thus far progressed it will be seen that the gate may be operated by the actuation of either lever 28 through the mechanism described. Each lever 28 has its own operating mechanism Which are similarly constructed and include a rod or shaft 34 embedded in the ground as is illustrated to advantage in figure 1 and journaled on blocks 35 or in any other suitable manner. A trip lever 35 is formed on the shaft 34 adjacent one end and a similar trip lever 86 is fixed to the other end thereof. These levers 35 vand 86 are so disposed that when one is up the other is dovvn. The trip lever 35 actuates the mechanism for opening the gate While the trip mechanism 36 actuates the mechanism for closing the gate. At one end the shaft 34 terminates in a crank 37 Which engages a slot 29 in the adjacent lever`28.
In considering the device especially as it is illustrated in Figure 3 it Will be seen that as aveliicle approaches from the left the wheels thereof will engage the trip arm 35 which is in Va raised position which Will actuate the mechanism to open the, gate.

To consider this trip lever 35 is depressed it will turn shaft 3ljournaled on blocks 35 causing Vcausing the track lever 12 to be fulcrumed and thus gravity will cause the gate to move to au open position. This operation is practically reversed when the trip lever 36 is depressed on the other side of the gate since it Will be noted that this trip lever 36 Will be raised when the opposite trip lever 35 is depressed because the rotation of the lever 30 will cause the other lever 28 to be fulcrumed which Will actuate the other cra-nk 37 and shaft 34 to depress the other trip lever and elevate the opposite trip lever 86.
From the foregoing description, taking in connection with the accompanying drawing, the construction and operation of the gate will be readily understood Without a more extended explanation. As numerous changes in form, proportion and in the minor details of construction may be resorted to Without departing from the spirit of the invention, 1 do not wish to be limited to the construction herein shown and described other than as claimed.
Having thus described my invention what 1 claim as newv is l. In combination, a frame, a lever pivoted to the frame, a pair of track levers pivoted to the frame one on each side of' the first mentioned lever, a pin and slotconnection between tlie track levers and the first mentioned lever so that the track levers may be inclined in parallelism, and a gate slidably engaged with the levers so that by shifting the inclination of the levers the gate may be moved to an open or closed posit-ion, said first mentioned lever being provided With arcuate arms one on each side of its fulcrum point so as to form rests for the gate.
2. in combination, a frame, a pair of track levers fulcrumed on the frame one on each side of its center, another lever fulcrumed to the frame bet-Ween the first mentioned levers and including a pair of arcuate arms one disposed on each side of its fulcrum point, a pin and slot connection Vbetween the pair of first mentioned levers and the last mentioned lever, one of said first mentioned levers terminating in a hooked extension, a gate including a pair of rollers one engaged With each of the first mentioned levers rotation of the crank 37 which in turn" ali-sense whereby the first mentioned levers may be inclined so that the gate will shift to an open or closed position in the manner and for the purpose specified.
3. ln combination, a frame, a lever fulcrurned to an intermediate portion of the frame, a pair of track levers fulcrumed to the frame one each side of the first mentioned lever, a pin and slot connection between the first lever and the adjacent ends of the pair of track levers7 a gate slidable on the levers so that when they are inclined the gaie will niove to an open 0r Closed position, a pair of operating levers ulcrumed so as to extend alongside of a roadway adjacent the gate, means for fulcrurning the operating levers, an auxiliary lever fulci'uined alongside of the frame, a pin and slot connection between the operating levers and the auxiliary lever, a link connection between the auxiliary lever and one of the track levers, and trip mechanisms associated with the operating levers, each trip mechanisin including a shaft having a crank at one end engageable with one of the operating rods for tulcruining the same, a pair o trip arms extending from the shaft at angles to each othei` so that when one is down the other will he up all in the manner and for the purpose Specilied.
