MARTIN MODONALD, Oli WASHINGTON, DISTRICT 0F COLUMBIA.
IJOORKNOB FASTENING.
Application filed December 13, 1921.
This iilvention relates to (1001 knobs ami e more particularly to means for fastening the knob tothe spindle, and has for its objt to provide certain new and usefu] improvements in the construction shown in my prior Patent No. l,l28,339,issued February 16, 1915. The particular feature of invention set f0rth in the present case is the eonstruction Whereby the form'ation of the ratchet teeth on the interior of the kn0b sbank is simplified and rendered inexpen- In the drawings:-
Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectionai view taken through EL door knob and the adjacentend portion of a spindle having my invention applied thereto.
Figure 2 is a cross sectional view on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2, che pinclle end dog or detent being omitted.
Figure 4 is a perspective view of one end of the spindle. 4 I
Figure 5 is a detail perspeetive view of the double dog or detent Which is earried by the spindle. W
A S shown in the gzceompanying drawing, 1 dsignates a spindle, and 2de'signates a knob of any eommon or preferred form or coflstruction. The spindle is reetzingular in cross sect-ion, as usual, and the tubular shank 3 of the knob is provided with a reetangular bore 4, as usual, to receive one end portion of the spindle.
As in my prior patent, the -spindle 1 is provided in each end with an opening or slot 5 extending transversely therethrough.
and disposed longitudinally of the spindle for a suitable distance. Within this opening there is mounted a double dog or detent 6, one end of whieh is pivo tally mounc-ed upon ,21, pin 7 carried by the spindle and extending tr an sverselyeeross the opening 5 adjacent the innepend thereof. The dog shown in the accompanying drawing is formed from a single piece of spring metal Which is beni; intermediate of' ts'ends. into substantially U shape, and the end portion Serial No. 522,021.
of each side or 1eg of the dog is bentback upon itself to forno a ratchet finger 8, che extremity of which flares outwardly from the U-Shaped body or shank of the dog. The dog may be conveniently assembled with the spindle by placing the dog estraddle of the pin 7 and then -turning the dog into the opening 5 in longitudinal alignment therewith. The ratchet fingere 8 extend outwardly through the open sides of the slot or opening 5 end slightl beyond the slotted aces of the spindle, es 0 early indioated in Figure 1 of tbe drawing.
The knob sbank 3 is sp1it longitudinally as at 9, and also at right angles there to as at 10, thereby producing two longitudinal slots or bifurcations intersecting one another ai; substant-ially right angles, and also interseeting tbe end of the shank 3 opposite the knob 2.
It Wl1 of course be understoed thai; eaeh end of the spindle is provided With a dog, and when the spindle 'has been placed in a (1001, the knebs may be Very conveniently fitted to the respective ends of the spndle and adjusted thereen in accordance With the thckness of the doer.
It will be noted tbat se far as external appearance s cencerned, there s litt1e or no change in the kneb end spindle, but at the same time the fastenng s efleetually housed and pretected Wthin the shank of the knob. The kneb may be very cenvenently fitted to the spindle end adjusted lengthwise thereen, end a1se may be conveniently removed. Loeseness of the knob is abselutely prevented by reason ef the two ratchet fingers engaging opposite sdes ef the bere 'of the shankv An impertant rnprovement ever rny prier patent fesides in the fact that each of the bifurcaions or slets 9 and 10 extend threugh or intersect the end of the shank opposte the kneb whereby the free extremtes of the (10;; or detent are always, accessble tbreuglrlone or the ether of the bfurcatiene and therefore there is no pestien in wbich tbe free ends of the doge are net acces-,
sble end capable ef being disengaged from the ratcheb teeth.
the spndle there is always e slot or bifur caton in the shank which exposes the free ends of the clegs'y for conveniencen dsengagng the samefrem the ratchet teth.
Having thus des'crbed the nventon what s claimed is:
1. The combinaton ef a spindle end a knob havng a shank, the spindle beng provided wth a longitudinal slot, a double dog meunted in the slot with its extremties prejectng et opposite sides of the spndle into engagement wit h eppeste walls of the bere of the knob shank, che knob shank beng provided with longitudinal bifurcatiens intersecting one anether et substantally right angles, and the bere of the shai1k havng ratchet teeth tappe-d theren and engaged by the free ends of the double deg. I
