STATES OTTO HANSON, OF VERDE, MINNESOTA.
BINDER HITCH.
Application filed September 30, 1920. Seriallto. 413,74-6.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Orro HANSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Verdi, in the county of Lincoln and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Binder Hitches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in draft connector for a binder and has for its primary object the provision of a simple form of draft connector for connecting the binder with a tractor.
The invention has for another object the provision of a draft connector of the character stated which will be constructed in such a manner that it may be readily converted into a left hand draft connector for a side binder or varied to connect a right hand binder with the tractor.
The invention has for a further object the provision of a draft connector of the character stated which will be constructed in such a manner that the main portion of the draft or strain will be directed to the longitudinal center of the draw bar of a tractor when either a left side or a right hand side binder is connected thereto.
The invention has for a further object the provision of a draft connector of the character stated which will be of simple and durable construction and which may be readily secured in position or adjusted, as required.
With the foregoing and other objects in view as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of cooperating elements as hereinafter more specifically set forth, claimed and shown in the accompanying drawings forming a part of the present application and in which Figure 1 is a top plan view of the draft connector employed for connecting a left side binder with the draw bar of a tractor or the like.
Figure 2 is a View similar to Figure 1, showing the draft connector as employed for connecting a right side binder with the draw bar of the tractor.
Figure 3 is a bottom plan view of the draft connector as employed in Figure 1 of the drawings.
Figure 4 is a side elevation of the draft connector as shown in Figure 1 of the drawlngs.
Figure 5 is a detail sectional view on the plane of line 5-5 of Figure 1, looking in the direction indicated by the arrows.
Figure 6 is a detail sectional view on the plane of line 66 of Figure 1, looking in the direction indicated by the arrows.
Referring more in detail to the drawings in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, 1 indicates the end of the draw bar of a tractor. The draft connector which will be described in detail is employed for connecting to the tractor draw bar, the draft bar 1, the draft tongue 3 of a side binder, a portion of which is shown in the drawings for the sake of illustration, and designated by the numeral 4:.
In constructing the draft connector shown in the accompanying drawings, I employ an upper main frame member 5 of substantially U shaped construction and preferably formed of a flat metallic bar of considerable so strength, also a lower main frame bar 6, similar to the upper main frame bar 5 but which may have a bight portion which is relatively narrower than the bight portion of the upper main frame bar 5, as shown in the drawings. The bight portions of the main bars and 6 are placed transversely across the upper and lower faces respectively of the draw bar 1, at the rear end thereof and connected by a plurality of bolts 7 or the like passed through the frame bars 5 and 6 and through the draw bar 1. Suitable nuts 8 are mount ed upon the ends of the bolts 7 and the central bolt 7 is preferably of slightly increased length, the purpose of which will presently appear. The bight portions of the main frame bars 5 and 6 are separated by the draw bar 1, as will be later seen by referring to Figure 30f the drawings, while the ends of the bars 5 and 6 are brought together and have the rear corner bolts 9 extended therethrough and also through the end portions of an arcuate draft bar 10, extended across the rear open end of the frame, as shown clearly in the drawings. It will be noted that the draw bar 10 rests upon the upper faces of the arms of the upper main frame bar 5. The draw bar 10 has a pair of inner openings 11 spaced slightly to either side of the longitudinal center thereof and adapted to receive the bolt 12 employed for connecting the rear end of the strain bar 13 thereto, said bolts 12 passing through the upwardly offset rear end of the strain bar 13 positioned beneath the bar 10. The rear end of the strain bar 13 is mounted on the lower end of the central bolt 7 which serves as a pivot for the forward end of said strain bar 13 as well as one of the bolts for securing the upper frame bar and lower frame bar 6 to the lower bar 1 of the tractor. The bar 10 is also provided with a pair of outer opening 14 between the openings 11 and the ends of the bar 10 to receive the forward pivot bolts 15 of the connecting bracket 16 for connecting the draft tongue 3 of the binder 1-, previously mentioned.
The connecting bracket 16 is composed of an upper bracket member 17 and a lower bracket member 18 in the form of metallic strips. These members 17 and 18 have their rear end portions secured respectively upon the upper and lower faces of the draft tongue 3 of the binder 1 by a plurality of bolts 19 extended therethrough and the forward end of the upper plate 17 is downwardly offset, as shown in the drawings and brought into parallel relation with the lower bracket member 18, immediately forwardly of the binder draft tongue 3, the connecting bolt 20 being passed through the bracket members 17 and 18 at this point, as shown in the drawings. llt will be understood that suitable nuts 21 are mounted upon the bolts 19 and 20 to secure the same in proper position. Forwardly of the bolt 20, the lower bracket member 18 is offset downwardly to be extended beneath the bar 10. Thepivot bolt 15 is extended through this end of the bracket member 18 and through the forward end of the upper bracket member 17 as well as being passed through one of the outer openings 14: of the bar 10. A suitable nut 23 is also provided for the lower end of the pivot bolt 15.
By referring to the drawings in connec tion with the foregoing paragraphs, it will be seen that when this draft connector is employed to connect a left side binder with the tractor, the strain bar 13 is moved over the opening 11 and the pivot bolt 12 secured therethrough. The pivot bolt 15 for the bracket 16 is also passed through the left opening 1 1 of the bar 10 and through the members 17 and 18 of the bracket 16 to pivot this bracket on the left of the longitudinal center of the bar 10 and on the left of the transverse center or longitudinal axis of draw bar 1 of the tractor. When it is desired to connect a right side binder in place of the left side binder, however, the strain bar 13 is swung to the other side and the pivot bolt 12 thereof passed through the opening 11 to the right of the longitudinal axis of the draw bar 1 and the pivot bolt 15 for the bracket 16 carrying the draft tongue 3 of the binder a is passed through the opening 1& of the bar 10 toward the right end of said bar 10. It will therefore be evident that when either a right side or a left side binder is connected with the bar 10 of the present form of draft connector, the strain or draft will be properly directed to the draw bar 1 of the tractor employed and the binder drawn properly after the tractor.
While the preferred embodiment of the invention has been shown and described, it will be understood that minor changes in the details of construction and arrangement of parts may be resorted to within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
l/Vhat is claimed is In a draft device for a tractor, the combination of two substantially ill-shaped frames one above the other, the bight portion of one frame engaging the upper face and the bight portion of the other frame engaging the lower face ofthe draft lug of a tractor, a bolt passing through said bight portions and lug, a strain bar through which said bolt passes, a cross bar, bolts passing through said cross bar and the ends of both of said frames to fasten the frames and cross bar in superposed relation and the frames at an angle to each other whereby they will abut opposite sides of said draft lug to rigidify the connection of the frame thereto, said cross bar having a series of openings intermediate said ends of the frame and in a path concentric with the first mentioned bolt for adjustable attachment of draft means thereto and independently of the strain bar, and a bolt to pass through said openings selectively to fasten said strain bar to the cross bar relatively to the position of attachment of said draft means.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
OTTO HANSON.
