Description

Mmh 4, 19240 H. W. MELLlNG WORK REST Filed Sept. 27. 1922 INVENTOR. /76//770/7 h Mam/7g BY f ATTORNEY$ Patented Mar. d, 1924.
warren 'srarss MEAN W. MELLING, F JACKSON, MICHIGAN.
WORK REST.
Application filed September 27, 1922. Serial No. 590,829.
T0 (1]? whom it may concern:
Be it known that ll, TTERMAN W. MEL- LING. a citizen of the lnited States, residing at Jackson, county of Jackson, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Work Rests, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in work rests for lathes.
The main objects of this invention are to provide an improved work rest for cam shaft lathes such as shown in my application for Letters Patent filed @ctober, 1917, Serial #416,750, which ma be quickly engaged with, or disengaged rom the Work and which when engaged, is very effective in supporting the work.
A further object is to provide an improved work rest for lathes adapted to effectively support the work against lateral thrust.
Further objects, and objects pertaining to details and economies of construction and operation will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification. The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which:
Fig. I is a fragmentary plan view of a cam shaft lathe only such portions of the lathe being shown as are deemed necessary to illustrate an adaptation of my improvements.
Fig. II is a side elevation of my improved work holder; it being shown in its retracted position by full lines and in its erected position by dotted lines.
Fig. HT is a detail vertical section of a line corresponding to line 3-3 of Fig. T.
In the accompanying drawings similar letters of reference refer to similar parts throughout several views.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents the bed of the machine, and 2 the work carriage which is provided with rotary work holders, 3. These work holders 3 are the work supporting and driving chucks. The work 4 shown is a cam shaft. The cutters designated generally by the numeral 5 are of the same character as those of my said application for Letters Patent.
My im roved work rest comprises a base 6 adapter? to be secured to the carriage 2, as by means of the bolts 7; the carriage being provided with a longitudinal groove 8 shouldered to receive the heads of the bolts as shown in Figs. H and HT. This enables theclamping of the base 6 in the desired position.
The work engaging yoke 9 is pivoted at at 10 and provided with an arm 11 adapted to overhang the work when the rest is engaged or erected, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. Ill. The yoke is provided with thrust rollers 12 and 13, the roller 12 engaging the side of the Work opposite the cutters and the roller 13 engaging the top of the work. The yoke is moved to and locked in its erected position by means of the lever 14 which is pivoted at 15 so that its inner end swings or slides along the rear edge 16 of the yoke swinging the yoke to erected position as the lever is depressed and looking it in such erected position. The lever sustains the thrust of the yoke and thereby supports the work against lateral thrust. 17 is arranged to retract the yoke when the The spring lever is disengaged so that to disengage the f rest, it is only necessary to lift up on the rear end of the lever, the releasing position being shown by full lines in Fig. II. This provides a very simple and edective means for operating the rest to engage and disengage it, and at the same time, the work engaging yoke is rigidly supported and the work in turn is effectively supported against lateral springing which is the purpose of the rest in the embodiment illustrated.
ll have illustrated and described my improvements as ll have embodied them in practice in a cam shaft lathe illustrated in my said application for Letters Patent. ll have not attempted to illustrate and describe certain other embodiments or adaptations which I contemplate as ll believe that the disclosure made, will enable those skilled in the art to which my invention relates, to embody or adapt the same as may be desired.
Having thus described my improvements, what ll claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A work rest comprising a base, a work engaging yoke pivoted on said base and adapted when erected to overhang the Work and having thrust rollers thereon engaging the side and top thereof, and a locking lever pivoted on said base at the rear of said yoke so that its inner end engages the rear side of the yoke to swing the same to and lock in erected position.
2;. A Work rest comprising at base, e Work engaging yoke pivoted on said base end reee eee edepted When erected to engage the work, 5 and a locking lever pivoted on said base at the rear of said yoke so that its inner end engages the rear side of the yoke to swing the same to and lock in erected position.
In Witness whereof, I have hereunto set 15 my hend end seal.
HERMAN W. r/rnnrrnte. 1,. 5.
