To all 'whom it may concern.:

Be it known that I, MAMIE L. CAvIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baker, in the county of Baker and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hair Curlers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full,

clear, and exact description of the invention,

such as will enable others skilled inthe art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to a hair curler. It is aimed to provide a novel construction or means whereby the essentials necessary to etiicient curling of the hair, for instance,

heat, time and application of the curle'r y while the hair is damp, may be advantageously practiced in an electrically operable and comparatively inexpensive form.

Additional objects and advantages will be pointed out or become apparent from a considerationof the description following taken in connection with accompanyingv drawings illustrating an operative embodiment.

In carrying out the invention, an iron is provided as at A which may be of any suitable size, shape or material which is adapted for detachable connection to an ordinary electrically operable curling iron holder by means of a suitable attaching shank l0 in order to place the resistance 11 in a closed electric circuit so as to thereby heat the iron. The iron A has a metallic covering or casing 12 which is formed into a stud 13 at the end opposite to shank 10. At the attaching end, iron A is laterally enlarged as at 14: and between the same and remainder of the iron a notch or roove 15 is provided. y

The hair is acglapted to be wrapped about the iron A and is prevented from entering the groove 15 by a guard such as a pin or rod 16. The hair when thus wrapped is preferably damp and it isy clamped to the" iron by a retainer or U-shaped clasp strip 17 which may be readily applied to'or removed from the iron. This strip may be of` `suitable sizeY and ispreferably made of flexible metal.

The retainer or clasp 17 is carried by a bail v18 preferably made-from a strand of resilient metallic wire and is fastened midway'of its ends at 19 to the retainer or clasp 17. The end portions of the bail 18 are outwardly deflected or curved as at 2() and one of them terminates in an eyelet 21 adapted to be slipped `over stud 13 and the other of which terminates in an attaching hook 22 adapted to surround the ironk A at the groove 15 and be retained in said groove.

The curlers are preferably used in any suitable pluralities, the khandle being attached successively to the shanks 10 of them in order to successively heat them.V It will be realized that the irons will retain their heat for a considerable length `of time and thus the user may follow ordinary pursuits about the home while they are in place in the` hair. The use of theinvention gives the hair waves of suflicient permanence to last anumber of weeks and thereby avoids `the nightly used curl paper and the expense of the permanent wave.

It will be understoodrthat the clasp V17 may be readily detached simply by disengaging the hook 22 from the groove 15 and thereafter disengaging eyelet 21 from the stud 13. The bowing Vor deflecting ofthe bail 18 at 20 enables the clasp 17 to accomodate various quantities of hair wrapped about the iron A, since the retainer 17 is fastened in the bail at its center and is free ofthe bail at its ends.

Various changes may be resorted to'within the spirit and scope of the invention.

I claim as my invention 1. A curler having an iron about which they hairvis adapted to be wrapped, a bail separable from and attachable to said iron, and a hair-retainer carried by said'bail independently of the iron to coact with said iron.

4. A curler having an iron, a bail assoa plurality of loops, the free end of one of said loops being an eyelet engaging said stud, the free end of the other loop being a hook engaging said groove, and a hair retainer at its ends free of said loops and engaged by the bail intermediate said loops.
