Patented Feb. 26, 1924.
HENRY acoornn, or wnsr UNION, OHIO.
PICTURE HANGER.
Application filed April 23, 1923.
To all whom a may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY A. COOPER, a citizen of the United States, residing at West Union, in the county of Adams and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Picture Hangers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to devices for hanging framed pictures, maps, charts and the like and has for its object the provision of a novel hanger which embodies means for effecting a clamping action on the frame so that no matter how heavy the frame may be or how old and weak it may become in time the parts thereof cannot loosen and become separated.
An important object is the provision of a device of this character which is adjustable for use on frames of different sizes, efficient clamping action being insured regardless of the degree of adjustment.
Another object is the provision of hangers of this character which should have the utmost durability as there are no parts to wear out or break, and which will have the additional advantage of not only clamping the frame together as above mentioned, but also holding the framed picture or the like firmly against a wall and always in upright position.
An additional object is the provision of a device of this character which will be simple and inexpensive to manufacture, easy to apply and use, efficient and durable in service and a general improvement in the art.
With the above and other objects and advantages in view the invention consists in the details of construction to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a picture hung by means of my hanger,
Figure 2 is an elevation looking at the rear side of the framed picture and showing my device applied thereto being in unlocked position,
Figure 3 is a similar view showing the device in locked position,
Figure 4 is an enlarged side elevation of the locking connection looking at one side thereof,
Figure 5 is a similar view of the other side,
Figure 6 is a detail perspective view of the locking lever.
Serial No. 634,164.
Referring more particularly to the drawings the letter A'designates the frame of a picture, chart, map, drawing or the, like to be hung from a wall or other support. In carrying out my invention I provide a pair of clamping members designated broadly by the numerals l0 and 11, which are engageable upon the upper and lower edges of'the frame. The clamping members consist of 'yokes 13 and 14 respectively which are Y 21 with its terminal portion provided with a key hole 22 for engagement upon a nail B or the like driven into the wall or other suport.
P Pivoted at 23 upon the bar 20 is a locking lever 24 which has one end laterally deflected to provide a thumb piece 25, and which has its other end formed with spaced ears 26 connected by a pin 27.
In applying my hanger, the clamping members 10 and 11 are disposed upon the top and bottom edges respectively of the frame, the lever 24 is swung to be disposed substantially transversely of the bar 20, and the parts are then moved to bring the pin 27 into engagement with the proper one of the notches 19. The lever 24 is then forced upwardly, i. 0. toward the upper edge of the frame and at the same time toward the bar 18 until the thumb piece 25 engages against the edge of the bar 18 and limits further movement. The picture is then hung by engaging the slot 22 on the nail or other securing element.
From the foregoing description and a study of the drawings it will be apparent that I have thus provided a simply constructed and consequently inexpensive framed picture hanger which 'will have great strength and which will not only hold the picture straight but also clamp the frame together so that separation of the parts will be impossible. It is to be noted that the device is fully adjustable for use on frames of different sizes. As the parts are so few and the construction so simple it is apparent that there is nothing to get out of order so that the device should have a long life and satisfactorily perform all of its functions.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of the invention it is of course to be understood that I reserve the right to make such changes in the form, construction and arrangement of parts as will not depart from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described my invention I claim:
1. A picture frame hanger comprising a pair of yokes having lateral ends terminating in retaining lips, said yokes being intended for engagement upon the upper and lower edges of a frame, a bar extending upwardly from the lower yoke and having its free end rearwardly ofiset and formed with a hole adapted for engagement upon a securing element, a bar depending from and pivotally connected with the upper yoke, and a locking lever pivoted upon the first named bar and having an adjustable connection with the second named bar.
2. A picture frame hanger comprising a pair of yokes having lateral ends terminating in retaining lips, said yokes being intended for engagement upon the upper and lower edges of a frame, a bar extending upwardly from the lower yoke and having its free end rearwardly ofiset and formed with a hole adapted for engagement upon a securing element, a bar depending from and pivotally connected with the upper yoke, and a locking lever pivoted upon the first named bar and having an adjustable connection with the second named bar, the looking lever carrying a pin, and said second named bar being formed with a plurality of notches within a selected one of which said pin may be engaged.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
HENRY A. COOPER.
