' v A. SOYLAND COMBINED TENT AND SLEEPING-BAG Filed Jan. 12. 1922 Patented Feb. 19, 1924.
ALF S ClYLALND, 0F BERGEN, NORWAY.
COMBINED TENT AND snnnrrne BAG.
Application filed January 1a, 1922'. Serial in). 528,765.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALF S'OYLAND, a sub ject of the King of Norway, residing at Bergen, Norway, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Tents and Sleeping Bags; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of referencemarked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The present invention has for its object a combined tent and sleeping bag, andit is characterized substantially by this that the opening of a wide rectangular sleeping bag b is continued some distance downwards along the side edges of the bag, so as to form two free portions, each of which is provided nearly at their middle with means for fastening a raising tent bar or for fastening tent pegs, backstays, etc., whereby the bag aperture may be raised upright, whereas the rear edge of the bag is provided at both ends with means for being fastened to the field, so that this edge is lying fiat down. In this manner the sleeping bag obtains a shape like that of a tetrahedron, at the base of which the tent has its aperture or entrance.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 shows the bag proper in folded condition.
Fig. 2 is a side view of the tent formed by the bag, and
Fig. 8 is a perspective View of the erected tent.
' formed. About at the middle of the front edge of these portions, at D, fastening means (preferably in the form of pockets) for the ends of a tent bar E are arranged, which can be stretched between the said pockets, so as to raise up'the bag aperture as indicated in Fig. 2, the rear edge of the bag having beforehand been anchored to the field either by ordinary tent pegs or by ropes C, so that this edge is lying fiat upon the field. The tent bar is provided at its upper part with a rope F, the free end of As shown in the drawing the bag aperwhich may be attachedto the field by a peg or the like, so that the bar E is maintained in a suitable inclined position. At the lat-- eral edges of the bag, viz, at the points A, where the-continued aperture ceases, ropes or baokstays B are attached, serving to pullout the upright aperture laterally, so that the front side of the tent obtains the shape shown in Fig. 3. In this position the free bag portions 'Gr form four triangular corners, and the latter are provided along their edges with buttons, hooks or the like, whereby the said corners may be connected together so as to serve in combination as a door in case the device is to be used as atent, or the aperture may be quite closed in case the device is to be used as a sleeping 'Instead of using a stifl tent'bar E, the lower pocket D may be attached to the field by means of a peg or the like, and the upper pocket may be pulled upwards by means of a rope fastened for instance to the branch of a tree.
The weight of a combined tent and sleeping bag for two men will be only about 1% kg.
Claims 1. A combined tent and sleeping bag constituted by a wide rectangular sleeping bag having its aperture continued a distance downwards along the two side edges of the bag so as to form two free portions, means engageable with said free portions at points between the ends of the front edges thereof for maintaining the bag aperture substantially upright, fastening members arranged at both ends of the rear edge of the bag to maintain said rear edge fiat upon the ground.
2. A rectangular sleeping bag having its normal aperture continued a distance downwards along the two side edges of the bag so as to form two free portions, spacing element fastening means arranged between the ends of the front'edge of each free portion, anchoring means secured to the side edges of the bag at the terminals of the continuations of the bag aperture, and means provided at each end of the rear bag edge for fastening the said ends to the field, for the purpose of enabling the bag to be used as a tent.
3. A rectangular sleeping bag having its normal aperture continued a distance downwards along the two side edges of the bag so as to form two free portions, spacing element fastening means arranged between the ends of the front edge off each free portion, means arranged along the edges of said free portions for enabling the bag aperture to be closed, anchoring means carried by the" side edges of the bag at the terminals of the continuations of the bag aperture, and means provided at each end of the rear bag edge for fastening the said ends to the field for the purpose of enabling the bag to be used as a tent. v V I 4;. A rectangular sleeping bag having its normal aperture continued a distance downwards along the two side edges of the bag so as to form two free portions pockets arranged between the ends of the front edge ofeaoh free portion, means engaging said pockets to spread the bag aperture vertically, means arranged along the edges of said free portion for enabling the aperture to be closed, anchoring means arranged in the lateral bag edges where the continued aperture ceases and ropes provided at each end of the rear bag edge for fastening the said ends to the field, for the purpose of enabling the bag to be used as a tent.
5. A sleeping bag having an open end and having slits extending along the opposite sides of the bag and terminating at the 6. A sleeping bag including opposite side members, said bag having open and closed ends and having slits extending inwardly fromthe open end equal distances along the opposite side edges ofthe bag, spaoing-element-fastening means arranged between the slits and located outwardly of the inner terminals of the latter whereby the opening end of the bag may be maintained in a,sub stantially upright open. condition, and means for anchoring the closed end of the bag tothe ground whereby said bagmay be utilized as a tent.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention, I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
