IMPROVEMENT IN STONE PAVEMENTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 148,357, dated March l0, 1374; application tiled October 11, 1.873.
To all whom it may concern: l
Be it known that I, ANDnnAs EICHENBERG, of Columbus, in the county ot' Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Ilnproved RoadBed; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this speoication, in Which- Figure l is a crossssection, and I `ig. 2 a plan view, with a part cut away.
My invention relates to an improvement in stone road-beds; and consists in arranging an upper vertical layer with a horizontal layer of flat stones, as hereinafter described. p
In the drawing, the bottom of the excavated road-bed is shown covered with flat stones, B, laid close together. Directly upon, and in contaet with, these is a layer of stones7 C, having like form. The stones forming the bottom layer are horizontal, while those of the upper are vertical, and both break joints to insure a greater degree of stability of the individual pieces in their normal position. Sand or gravel is used to lill the interstices between the stones. The stones used for the base and top layer are preferabl5T of like thickness, but may differ somewhat. Thus constructed, the bed is very durable, affords a superior foot hold for feet of draft animals, and-admits oi' repair, when necessary, with little labor or expense.
The improved stone road-bed, formed by vertical stones C and horizontalV stones B placed in direct contact, as and for the purpose specified.
ANDREAS EIQHENBERG.
