Description

Feb. 12 1924. v 1,483,464
- J. J. MAGRADY I NOSE mow FOR SCALES Filed July 2, 1923 El wvemtoz 6 than,
Patented Feb. 12, 1924.
UNITED STATES JOSEPH JOHN MAGRADY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
NOSE IRON FOR SCALES.
Application filed July 2,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH J. MAGRADY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing a Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nose Irons for Scales, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates generally to scales and more particularly to the lever connections of platform scales, especially those in which the main su porting levers converge from the corners o the pit, where the platform is supported, to the center thereof, where they are at present connected by loops, links, shackles, acorn bearings, etc., to the cross or fifth lever.
My primary object is the provision of a double nose iron, the use of which will permit of the doing away with connections of the ra idly wearing type above named and will a mit of ready spreading or bringing together of the main supporting levers and to pits of different widths,
applying the same the multiplication of the without changing pivots thereof.
According to my present invention each pair of main levers are adjustably extended into a pair of sockets forming, with their hinged connection at one end, a double nose iron. The angular relation of these socket members may be changed in a ready easy manner so that the main supporting levers adjustably attached thereto may be swung toward or away from one another in ada ting these levers to pits of various widt s. Moreover the hinge between the two sockets of each nose iron is completed by a hinge pin which also serves to hold a pivot block on the nose iron whereby a lasting and effective knife hearing may be utilized.
In the accompanying drawing which illustrates my present invention and forms a part of this specification,
Figure 1 is a top plan view showing the general arrangement of levers in the pit of a platform scale of the type to whic my invention applies,
Figure 2 is a detail top of the double nose irons,
Figure 3 is a vertical section taken through the nose iron in a lane through its hinge pin, substantially on a 3-3 of Figure 2,
mem

same in connection with one of the main supporting levers, and
Figure 5 is a side view of the other socket member, companion to the socket member shown in Figure 4.
Referring now to these figures and particularly to Figure 1 I have shown an arrangement of levers adaptable for a platform scale pit, the main platform supporting lever indicated at 10 and converging from the four corners of the pit to substantially the center thereof for connection with the cross lever or fifth lever'11 adjacent to the inner pivotally supported end of the latter my invention contemplating a double nose iron for each pair of main supporting levers whereby connection may be-efi'ected between the same and the cross or fifth lever, employing a knife bearing having a lasting effective life and whereby each pair of main supporting levers may be adjusted toward or away from one another in adapting a series of supporting levers to scale pits of various widths.
For this purpose each nose iron generally indicated at 12 in Figure 2 consists of a pair of socket members 13 and 14 whose lengthwise sockets 15 are adapted to receive reduced extensions 16 of the ends of the re spective main supporting levers 10 as seen in Figure 4, each socket member having spaced apertured ears 17 depending therefrom at its outer end.
At its inner end the socket member 13 of each nose iron has a reduced circular portion 18 forming one part of a hinge, the other portion 19 of which has a similar reduced portion at the inner end of the socket member 14 which is adapted to overlap the circular extension 18. One of these extensions, namely the extension 18, has a conical upper surface for the reception of which the extension 19 has a conical cavity in its lower surface, both of the extensions having axial openings 20 for the reception of a hinge pin in the form of a bolt 21 passing upwardly in practice through the extensions and provided with a threaded upper end 22 for on gagement within the threaded bore of a pivot block 23. This pivot block seats upon the upper surface of the extension 19 and is provided with a squared pivot bearing 24 through its up er portion having projecting ends beyond t e pivot b ock, and thus located within the vertical plane of the axis on which the two socket members 13 and 14 swing in providing for adjustment of the supporting levers toward and away from one another.
Eor adjustment of the socket members of the nose block on the main lever extensions 16, an adjusting screw may be secured with the depending lug 26 of each lever and extended through the apertured ears 1? of the respective socket member, an adjusting Wheel 2 being threaded on each screw and located between the ears 1? as particularly seen in Figure 4; whereby upon turning this Wheel the respective socket member ma vbe shifted lengthwise of its lever 10 that is toward or away from the same depending upon the direction of such rotation. The adjusting wheel 27 may be secured in adjustable position by a cotter pin or seal 28 passing through small openings in the cars 17 and through one of the peripheral series of apertures With which each adjusting lever is provided.
I claim:
1. A double nose iron of the type and for the purpose described consisting of a pair of lever engaging members hingedly connected at one end. and a pivot supporting member held on the nose iron in line with the axis of adjusting movement of said socket members.
2. A double nose iron including a pair of lever engaging members, a hinge connection at one end of said members permitting the latter to swing with respect to one another. and a pivot holding member mounted on the iron in line with the axis of said hinge connection.
3. A nose iron including a pair of socket members, a hinge connection between said socket members at on end, including a hinge pin, and a pivot supporting member on the iron, held in place by aid pin, a double nose iron including a pair of socket members. a hinge connection between said socket members at one end upon which the latter are adjustable relative to one another, including a hinge pin in the :form of a bolt having a threaded upper end. and a pivot supporting block on the nose iron having a threaded socket to receive the upper threaded end of the hinge pin.
1. A double nose iron including a pair of socket members having overlapping circular extensions at one end, provided with central apertures, a bolt extending through said apertures and forming a hinge pin, having a threaded upper end, and a pivot supporting block on the nose iron having a threaded bore to receive the threaded upper end of said bolt.
In testimony whereof I have afiixed my signature.
JOSEPH JOHN MAGRADY.
