Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
JOHN ROSE, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMPOSITIONS FOR STUFFING LEATHER.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 14,832, dated May 6, 1556.
To all whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, JOHN ROSE, of the city of Newark, county of Essex, and State of New Jersey, have discovered a new and useful Oompound for the Softening of all Kinds of Leather; and I do declare the following to be a full and exact description thereof.
The nature of the discoyery consists in an application to the leather of a compound of such a softening quality and so congenial to leather as to entirely dispense with the neces sity of using the pin-block or any other harsh mode now used to render tanned or carried leather pliable. It also, from the small proportion of fatty matter, fits the leather much better than any other composition now known or used for a high finish, tending to preserve the enamel instead of causing it to crack or come off. It also renders the leather more durable.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my new composition, 1 proceed to state the ingredients, the proportion of each, and the manner of compounding and using the same.
The proportions are two pounds rye-meal, one pound beeswax,
one pound rosin, two gallons of molasses, one gallon cod-oil.
The mode of compounding is to make astiff paste with water of the rye-meal, then dissolve the wax and rosin together, and mix in the ryepaste. When well mixed add thereto the molasses and the cod-oil, stirring them well together. Then, letting it become perfectly cool, it is ready for use.
The manner of use is that commonly known by the term stuffing.
Being well aware that other meal than rye and other oil or fatty matter than cod, it commingled with the wax, rosin, and molasses, can be used, and would produce nearly the same ett't-cts, I therefore do not claim the rye-meal nor the cod oil exclusively, nor the precise proportions specified.
What I do claim as my discovery, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Sot'tening leather by stufiing it with a compound made of paste made of rye or other meal, beeswax, rosin, molasses, and oil or other fatty matter, in the proportions as specified.
JOHN ROSE.
