Description

Feb.,
WIG. BARKER ET AL ADVERTISING APPARATUS Filed Jan. 5I 1923 atented Feb. l2, i924s WILLIAM GEORGE BAKKER AND FREDERICK ORLANDO READ, OF LONDON, ENGLAND.
ADVERTISING APPARATUS.
Application led January 8, 1923, Serial No. 611,501.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that `we WILLIAM GEORGE BARKEP. and FREDERICK RLANDO REAp, both subjects of the King of Great Britain, and both residents of London, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements Relating to Advertising Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to advertising apparatus and particularly to apparatus of that eneral kind in which a light-controlling e ement is adapted to rotate about .a prime source of light in order to cause varigated illuminations to pass across some form of display screen arranged in proximity.
The object of the invention is to provide means whereby such apparatus will be rendered capable of producing more striking and 'varied effects than heretofore and to this end the invention consists in the provision of one or more additional light-controlling elemcnts adapted to rotate independently about the source of light and preferably about the first light-controlling elenient in order to produce a modified effect upon the display screen.4
An embodiment of the invention is designed t0 produce the edect of a flying aeroplane silhouetted against a background of moving clouds is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Fig. 1, is nn elevation of a. transparent globe with my invention in place and Fig. 2 is a detail of the construction which will nou7 be described. it being understood that the Construction illustrated is susceptible of various modifications without departing from the scope. of the appended claims:-
Reterring to the drawing the same illustrates a frosted glass globe a the frosting being represented by the shading m--which in this particular case constitutes the display screenan electric lamp b mounted lhercwithin, a semi transparent cylinder o rotatable about said lamp, land oppositely mounted templates (l in the formof acro planes silhouettes adapted to rotate both about said cylinder and said source of light.
ln the particular embodiment under con sideration the whole apparatus, with the exception of the templates d and the supporting means therefor is substantially identical with that described and claimed in the specification of our prior British Patent. No. v178986. rlhus the cylinder c is. rotatablyv mounted upon a central wire pivot supported by the lamp and carries air vanes in its upper endso that the rising current of hot air consequent upon energization of the lamp causes said cylinder to rotate. The supporting means for said templates are as follows A. rectangular wire frame e the lowermost member of which includes a medial ring f and the uppermost member of which includes a medial support g for a pivot point It. is mounted upon the socket of the lamp.
the templates are made detachable from the arms.
The vanes in the member j are inclined in a different sense from those of the cylinder 0 so that the convection current of air rising from the lamp b will cause the cylinder and the aeroplane templates to` rot-ate in opposite directions.
To assemble the apparatus the globe is lifted slightly from its seat the whole unit comprising member 7' arms r and templates d is inserted by hand into the globe from beneath. An elongated hook is then inserted into the globe from above and hooked into the ring Z whereupon the globe may be allowed to return to its seat and the said unit may be placed with its bearing on the pivot point z, hy means of the hook.
ln the embodiment-J under consideration the cylinder c is so coloured that when the lamp b is energised a cloud like edect is prolOG iected from said cylinder on to the globe a.
That is, the cylinder is colored inppatches as indicated by o each patch throwing a different colored shadow on the globe and as these shadows rotate with the cylinder this gives the globe the appearance of rotation. The effect produced by the templates al as will be understood is that of aeroplane shadows or silhouettes so that the effect projected upon lll@ the globe when the apparatus is in operation is that of aeroplanes thrown into relief against a background of luminous clouds, the aeroplanes and clouds moving in opposite directions. l
Itis to be understood that the invention is by no means limited to the particular construction described. For instance, the general arrangement of the display screen may follow that described in our prior British Patent N o. 162924 and We may if desirable vary the means for producing rotation of the two rotatable elements.
.What We claim and desire to `secure by Letters Patent is l 1. Advertising apparatus of the kind described comprising a source of light, a eolored translucent cylinder rotatable on the axial plane about said light, an air vane pivoted in a cup shaped bearing.' in the axial plane of said cylinder and having a plurality of horizontal arms with downward offsets, opaque figures secured to said arms, means for causing rotation of said cylinder and .figures by the heat from said lamp and a frosted shade enclosing said appara'tus.
2,. Advertising apparatus of the kind de scribed comprising a source of light, a colored translucent cylinder with an air vane at its upper end rotatably mounted on its axial plane about said light, a second air vane pivoted in a cup shaped bearing in the axial plane of said cylinder, arms extending from said second vane, opaque figures secured to said arms, a shade enclosing said apparatus, and an eyelet extending from lsaid second vane 1n register wlth an aperture in said shade wherebysad vane may be positioned on said bearing.
.'Xdrertising apparatus of the class described comprising a source of light, a translucent cylinder-With an air vane at its upper end rotatively mounted aboutsaid light, a second air vane rotatably mounted in the axial plane of said cylinder, a frosted globe enclosing said apparatus, opaque figures secured to said second vane and arranged to rotate close to said globe.
4. Advertising apparatusotl the kind described comprising a light bulb, a translucent cylinder with an air vane surrounding said bulb, a Wire fastened to said bulb and terminating in a point at the apex of said bulb and forming a pivot for said cylinder, a wire frame secured to the base of said lamp supporting a cup-shaped bearing in the axial plane of said cylinder, a second air vane pivoted in said cup-shaped bearing and arms with figures secured thereto supported by said second vane.
5. Advertising apparatus of the kind described comprising a light bulb, a plurality of bearings in the axial plane of said bulb. a plurality oi' air vanes pivoted in said bearings and adapted to be rotated by convection currents of air from said bulb, a frostcd shade surrounding said apparatus, opaque figures secured to one of said air vanes and arranged to rotate close to said shade, and a translucent cylinder secured to the other air vane.
In Witness whereof we afiix our signatures. WILLIAM GEORGE BARKER. FREDERICK ORLANDO READ.
