To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, J OHN F. SECKINGER, a subject of the King of England, residing at Humboldt, in the province of Saskatche- 5 wan and Dominion of Canada, have invented new and useful Improvements in Heating Attachments for Cookstoves, of which the following is a specification.

The object of the invention is to provide a device for use in connection with ordinary cook stoves whereby the advantages of a heating stove may be derived, particularly under conditions where the fuel is inferior, as for example when it consists of lignite or green wood or hard coal, or where an increased draught directly through the body of the fuel is necessary in order to obtain an effective combustion thereof, and where an increased radiating surface is required in order to obtain the benefit of the fuel for heating purposes, and also to provide a means whereby when the stove or range is desired for heating purposes, as distinguished from cooking purposes, the desired eifect may be secured without maintaining the lower portion of the stove in an obj ectionably hot condition, and yet whereby for ordinary purposes the stove or range, with the attachment in place may be used for cooking purposes, and with these objects in view the invention consists in a construction of which a preferred embodiment is shown in the accompanying drawing, wherein:

The device consists of a downwardly tapered shell 10 comprising side and end walls which may be formed of a single blank of sheet steel or sheet iron or if preferred may be cast, having a top plate 11 attached 5o thereto and constructed to receive the stove 1920. Serial No. 384,615.

In communication with the interior of the receptacle thus formed is arranged a stove pipe thimble 14 to which may be attached a stove pipe 15, supplemental to the main stove pipe 16 of the range or cook stove 17, and in communication with said stove pipe 16 to the end that they are mutually in communication with the chimney indicated at 18. The receptacle or casing forming the body portion of the device is open at its bottom as indicated clearly in the drawings and the lower edges of the walls thereof are adapted to rest upon the surface of the top plate 20 of the stove or range preferably with a tongue 21 on the lower edge of the front wall engaging under the edge of the top plate of the stove or range as indicated in Figure 4, to hold the attachment properly in place against tipping or tilting and insure a practically air-tight joint between the walls and the top of the stove. Obviously the weight of the stove pipe connection with the rear wall of the receptacle will maintain the back of the device in proper relation to the stove.

The attachment is applied after removing the usual stove plates and I-bar of the range or cook stove to the end that the capacity of the fire box of the stove or range is increased to the extent of the capacity of the interior of the attachment, and as the supplemental stove pipe serves to induce a draught vertically through the attachment as well as the fire box of the stove or range, a fuel of comparatively low combustibility may be consumed under such conditions as to prove effective as a heating agent, particularly owing to the high radiating capacity of the rela- 9o tively thin walls of the receptacle, and yet when desired the top of the device may be used for cooking purposes, and as above noted, to this end the same is provided with the removable lids corresponding with those of the ordinary cook stove or range.

What is claimed is:

The combination with a cook stove having a stove pipe for connection with a chimney, of a downwardly tapered shell comprising side and end Walls and provided with a top plate constructed to receive the stove lids and I-bar of the stove, said shell being open at the bottom for interior communication with the stove through the space provided by the removal of the lids and I-bar, said shell on its front Wall being provided with a tongue at the lower edge for engagement under the edge of the top plate of the stove, and an auxiliary draft connection between the shell 10 and the stove pipe and communicating with the former adjacent the top.
