COUPLER EELEKsii resents;-
Application filed September 23, 1922. Serial No. 590,063.
To all whlom it may concern:
Be it known that I, STERLING H. CAMP- BELL, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, United States of America, have invented a certain new and useful Coupler Release Rigging, of which the following is such a full, clear, and exact description as will enable any one skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to a coupler release rigging and particularly to that type of rigging in which a rotary actuating rod is rovided with an operating arm passing directly through the lock pin eye. It is essential that the operating arm and lock pin have relative movement both laterally and longitudinally in a horizontal plane. Relative movement in one direction, either lateral or longitudinal, is secured by the movement of the arm through the eye.
The object of my invention is to provide for relative movement of the parts in the second direction and this I secure by providing a member attachable to the lock pin and having formed therein an auxiliary elongated eye either parallel with or at right angles to eye of the lock pin as the case may require.
In the accompanying drawings which illustrate release rigging made in accordance with my invention, Figure 1 is a top plan view of a railway car to which is applied a member having an auxiliary eye elongated in the direction of the length of the car. Figure 2 is an enlarged end view of the member provided with the auxiliary eye, together with the adjacent parts. Figure 3 is a view taken at right angles to Figure 2. Figure 4 is a view similar to Figure 1 but showing a member provided with an auxiliary eye elongated in a transverse direction. Figure 5 is an enlarged side view of the eye carrying member shown in Figure 4. Figure 6 is a view taken at right angles to Figure 5, and Figure 7 is a side view of the parts shown in Figure 1.
10 indicates a railway car provided with a coupler head 11 of the usual vertical plane type. The coupler head 11 has a lock pin 12 in which is formed a transverse eye 13. 14 is the actuating rod rotatably mounted in brackets 18 secured to the end of the car 10. Projecting forwardly from the inner end of the rod 14 is the operating arm 15 which may pass directly through the eye of the attachable member or may be provided with an extension 16 projecting in a transverse direction. In either case the arm preferably terminates in a hook 17 The actuating rod 14 is controlled by a handle 19 which is pivoted at 20 to a bent over portion of the outer end of the rod 14 so that it may drop back into vertical position, after the pin is lifted, independently of the movement of the said rod.
Referring first to Figures 1, 2, 3 and 7, a housing 21 is provided, fitting snugly over the upper end of the lock pin 12 and held in position by a headed stud 22 passing through suitable openings in the housing and through the eye 13 of the look pin. The stud 22 may be retained by any suitable means, such for example, as the cotter pin 23. The housing 21 is provided with an auxiliary eye 24 extending in a longitudinal direction to compensate for the longitudinal movement of the coupler head, the lateral movement being compensated for by the movement of the extension 16 through the eye.
In Figures 4 5 and 6 I have shown a modification in which the extension 16 is omitted. In this construction, the longitudinally extending auxiliary eye 24 is replaced by an eye 25 elongated in a transverse direction. It will be evident that this construction will secure the same results as that first described. The function of the parts are however, reversed, the movement of the rod through the eye compensating for the longitudinal movement of the coupler while the elongation of the eye compensates for the lateral movement thereof.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim; asnew and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. In a device of the class described, the combination, with a vertical plane coupler provided with a lock pin, of a shaft therefor mounted. for rocking movement only and having an operating arm, and a housing adapted to fit over the upper end of said lock pin, said housing being provided with an elongated auxiliary eye through which said arm passes.
2. In a device of the class described, the through the pin eye, and an auxiliary eye combination, With a vertical plane coupler, carried by said housing and through which provided With a lock pin, of a shaft therefor said arm passes. 10 mounted for rocking movement only and In testimony whereof, I have hereunto 5 having an operating arm, a housing adaptset my hand and aflixed my seal.
ed to fit over the upper end of said pin, fastening means for said housing passing STERLING CAMPBELL [L.s.]
