NITED STA S JULIUS BO, 0! NEW YORK, N. Y.
no: me manner or Application filed Hay e, 1921. Serial in. -,awe.
To all whom it ma concem:
e it known that I, JULros Boncmms, a citizen of the United States, "and resident of the city of New York, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain vnew and useful Improvements in Boxes and Methods of Making the Same, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in boxes and also to an improved method of making the same.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a box-blank, that is made of an outer layer, a lining and interposed stiffening pieces, both the outer layer and the lining being made of one integral iece and provided with triangular corner olds, which are folded centrally, in setting up the box, on a line intersecting the junction point of the adjoining sides and fastened together by suitable means at the meeting top ed es of said sides.
Anot or object of the invention is to provide a box-blank ofthe character mentioned, which is simple in construction, which may be convenientlyset up to form a box, and one which is capable of manufacture on a commercial scale, or in other words one which is not so diflicult to make as to be beyond the reasonable cost of such a contrivance.
A. further object of the invention is to provide a box which is capable of being conveniently collapsed into fiat form by removing the fastenings in its corners.
A still further object of the invention is to so design the box that the outer layer above referred to may be ornamented, for instance embroidered, before the same is united with the other elements of the box.
With these and other objects in view, which will more fully appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the.
same consists in the combination, arrangement and construction of parts hereinafter described, pointed out in the appended claim and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, it being understood that many changes may be made in the size and proportion of the several parts and details of construction within the scope of the appended claim, without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
One of the many possible embodiments of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure-l 1s a plan view of a box-blank constructed in accordance with the present invention Fig. 2 is a section taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a pore ective view of the said blank, set up to cm a box, with the cover'in its open position.
The blank comprises an outer layer or covering 10 of fabric or other similar material, a lining 11, also of fabric or like material, and interposed stifiening pieces 12 of cardboard or the like. The covering 10 and the lining 11 are each made of one integral p1ece, and comprise each a box-bottom portion 13 of any suitable size and configurat1on. Around this bottom, as the basis, the sides 14: are folded up, said sides being unlted by triangular corner folds 15, which lack the stifi'ening pieces. 'lhese corner folds are made integral with the covering 10 and lining 11, they being in the form of flexible webs between adjacent sides, each having a free edge 16 connecting the free or top edges 17 of said sides. A cover 18 is made integral with the remainder of the blank, more particularly with one of the sides thereof.
In making this blank, the outer covering 10 and lining 11 are cut to the required shape, the outer covering being somewhat larger, for a purpose presently to be described. 'These two elements are then placed one on top of the other and united by rows 19 of stitches at the lines of junction of the several elements of the box to be formed, that is to say at the lines of junction at the bottom, sides, cover and webs. The stifi'ening pieces are interposed either before the sewing operation, or the sewing operations may be partly performed previously and the stiffening pieces then placed between the covering and lining, the remainder of the sewing operations being done after insertion of the stiffening pieces. The free edges of the outer covering project, when the blank is thus far completed, beyond thefree edges of the lining, the outer covering being for this purpose cut somewhat larger, and these projecting free edges are folded over the free edges of the lining, as shown at 20, the folded over portions bein held in position by stitches 21 of any suitai ble type, said last named stitches servingalso to ornament the box. The blank so obtained is then ready for making a box.
In setting up the box, the sides 14 are folded up around the bottom 13 as a basis, the webs being each folded centrally in a line intersecting the junction point of the adjoining sides and fastened together for in stance by stitches 22 adjacent the meeting top edges of adjacent sides, said stitches passin through the sides.
If esired, the outer layer or covering 10 of the box ma be ornamented, for instance embroidere before the said layer is attached to the lining.
What I claim is A box-blank, comprising an outer coverll ing and an inner lining. each including a bottom, sides, a cover and triangular corner folds, lines of stitching uniting said outer covering with said inner lining along the lines of junction of said bottom, sides, cover and corner folds, interposed stiffening pieces in the bottom-, sidesand cover-portions of the blank, each corner fold being united with two adjoining sides throughout the length of two of its edges and having a free edge connecting the free edges of the respective sides. said corner folds being foldable centrally on a line intersecting the point of junction of adjoining sides.
Signed at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, this 16th day of April, A. D. 1921.
JULIUS BORCHERS.
