The present invention relates to railway car trucks, and particularly to the frames thereof. The object of "this invention, in general, is to provide a six-wheel truck frame, in which the side frames are of integral formation and have incorporated therewith provisions for mounting the journal-jbox springs, brake rigging and equalizer system, the end sought to be attained being a simplification of the frame structure and greater strength thereof with less weight of metal.
The truck embodying the present invention has flexibly connected side frames, each consisting of an integral steel casting of box-section form, in which the body of the side frame, the pedestals, spring caps and parts for mounting the equalizer levers and brake rigging are all formed as one piece, and so designed as to secure maximum strength with minimum weight of material.

Referring to the drawings, Figures 1 and 2 illustrate a six-wheel passenger car truck, comprising side frames 12 and bolster These frames are un-conne'cted except by the rods 14;, which are designed to have sufiicient flexibil-it toperm'it the side frames 'to move out er 'a'iignm'ent when required by irregularities of the track. As shown in Figures 1 and 10 the inner side wall 12 of the side frame has theap'ertures 14 for the ends of the rods 14. These rods have shoulders 11*, abutting the inner surface of "the side frame adjacent the apertures and have reduced threaded end portions extending "through the apertures. Nuts 1190 1 the threaded portions clamp the shoulders against the side frames. These nuts are secured against un screwing in any suitable manner as "by peaning over the ends of the rods. The spaces from the end axles outwardly are jun'obstructed in -order "to facilitate connecting a pulley on the end axle with a car-lighting generator hung from the body of the car.
The side frames '12, to which the present invention is more particularly directed, consists of a one-piece steel casting having a cross section of box form. The body of the frame gradually tapers in cross section from its central part towards the ends, and the end portions are directed inwardly and support brake beams 15. a The "brake rigging is supported from two pairs of lugs 16 which project from the inner side of each frame.
Depending from the body of the frame are three pairs of pedestals for the journal boxes, a central air 17 and twoou'ter pairs 18. Figure 11 lustrates the form of these pedestals in cross section. Figures 6 and 7 show respectively elevations of opposite sides of the central pedestals, and Figures 8 and 9 show elevations of o; p'osite sides of the outer pedestals. It will e observed that the pedestals are of hollow construction, taper in cross section towards the feet 19, have vertical faces for attaching wear plates 20 and have open backs. The rest bf the pedestals are connected by tie plates 21. The bottom wall of the side frames between the pedestals of each pair is omitted to provide openings to accommodate the journal-box springs 40 interposed between the journal boxes and seats 35 in the top wall of the frames. To strengthen the frame at these pointsre'inforcing webs 22 and 23 are located at each side f the openings.
Also depending from the body of the frame are a pair of projections, or short pedestals, 24. These short pedestals are located relatively close to the outer journalbox pedestals and face towards the center pedestals. The faces of the short pedestals have bolt holes for the attachment ofwear plates 24 and have open backs (see Figure 10) for a purpose to be described.
The bolster 13, which may be of any suitable construction, for example such as shown 'links 29 and the long arms are connected l to the ends of a central equalizer bar 30.
This bar 30 consists of an inverted U or arch-shaped'member, the crown of which rests on a spring -10 interposed between it and the center journal box and is disposed in the side frame so that its upper part projects upwardly into a longitudinal slot 31 formed in the top wall of the frame. The
two equal legs of this central barstra ddle the webs 22, pass through the open backs of the center pedestals and are connected, as aforesaid, to the longer arms of equalizer levers 28. The side walls defining the slot 31 are protected by wear plates 31 which bear against the sides of the base of the bar. 30. V I
The hanger links 29 pass through the open backs of the short pedestals 24 and are pivotally supported by keys 32, which pass through apertures in the upper ends of the links and rest on horizontal aligned shelves 33. These shelves 33'project from the side walls of the frame and are reinforced by vertical webs 34 (see Figure 10). The hanger links are disposed between the shelves and project upwardly through openings formed in the top wall of the frames, thus being readily removable.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is;
1. In a six-wheel truck, in combination, a pair of one piece side frames each having three pairs of pedestals receiving the journal boxes, and transverse rods connecting said frames being secured toasaid frames between the center and outer pedestals, said rods having sufficient flexibility to permit said frames to move out of alignment when required by 1rre'gular1t1es of the track, the

In a six-Wheel truck, in combination, a pair ofone piece side frames each having three pairs of journal-box pedestals and a short pedestal between each pair relatively near the outer pair, an equalizer bar between adjacent pairs of pedestals having one end connected to the, frame and the other end connected to the central journal box, a bolster having spring beams bearing against said frame being unconthe faces of said short pedestals, springs between said beams and equalize-r bars, and flexible bars between the wheels of the truck connecting said frames, the end portions of said frame being unconnected.
3. In a six-wheel truck, in combination, a one piece side frame of box section form including three pairs of pedestals for the journal boxes, a short pedestal between each pair relatively near the outer pair and having a vertical face adapted to bear against the bolster spring beam, the backs of said short pedestals being open, hanger links for the equalizer bars disposed in said open backs, and a pair of horizontal aligned shelves projecting from the side walls of said frames above each of said short pedestals adapted to support keys for the hanger links, the top wall of theframe having open- 7 ings above said shelves.
4. In a six-wheel truck, in combination, a]
one piece side frame .of box-section form in eluding three pairs of pedestals, a short pedestal between each pair having avertical bear-ing face for the bolster spring beam, the central pedestals havin'g'open backs and said frame having a longitudinal slot openhanger links for the equalizing bars disposed in said open backs, and a pair of horizontal aligned shelves projecting from the side Walls of said frame above each of said short pedestals adapted to support keys for the hanger links.
5. In a six-wheel truck, a one piece side frame of box-section form, including three pairs of pedestals and a short pedestal be tween each pair having avertical bearing face for the bolsterfsprin'gbeam, the central pedestals having open backs and said frame having a longitudinal slot opening through the top wall therof to accommodate a central equalizing bar. r
6. In a six-wheel truck, in combination, a one piece side frame of box-section form including three pairs of pedestals for the journal boxes, a short pedestal between eachpair relatively near the outer pair having a vertical bearing face for the springbeamand having an open back, the center pair'of pedestals having open backs and said frame having a longitudinal slot opening through the top wall thereof above said center air, an equalizing bar between each pair 0 pedesf tals, hanger links for the equalizing bars passing through the open backsof said short pedestals, and a central equalizing lever hav ing an arch-shaped body bearing on the center j ournal-box spring and extending into said slot and having equal arms passing through the open backs of said center pedestals and connected to said equalizing bars.
7. In a six-wheel truck, a one piece side frame of box-section form including three pairs of pedestals for the journal boxes and a short pedestal between each pair relatively near the outer pair, said frame opening downwardly between the pedestals of each pair to accommodate the j ournal-box springs and the backs of said central pedestals and said short pedestals having openings, for the purpose described.
8. In a six-wheel truck, a one piece side frame of box-section form including three pairsof pedestals and a short pedestal between each pair relatively close to the outer pedestals, said frame having openings in its lower wall between said short pedestals and said outer pedestals and having a pair of horizontally aligned shelves projecting from its side walls inwardly above each of said open ings for supporting hanger links for the equalizing bars. 9. In a six wheel truck, in combination, a pair of one piece side frames each having three pairs of journal box pedestals and a short pedestal between each pair relatively near the outer pair, an equalizer bar between each pair of pedestals, a central equalizer lever bearing on the center journal-box spring and having equal arms directly connected to said equalizing bars, hanger links connecting the other ends of said bars to the frame, a bolster having spring beams bearing against the faces of said short pedestals, springs between said beams and equalizing bars, and flexible bars between the wheels of the truck connecting said frames, the end portions of said frames be-in'g unconnected.
10. In a six-wheel truck, a one piece side frame of box-section form including three pairs of pedestals for the journal boxes, a short pedestal of hollow construction between each pair relatively near the outer pair having a vertical face adapted to bear against the bolster spring beam and having an open back, said frame having an opening in its top wall in alignment with said open back and having means for supporting a hanger link adapted to pass through said opening.
11. In a six wheel truck, a one-piece side frame including a body portion of box-section form and three pairs of hollow pedestals depending therefrom, each of said pedestals having a horizontal foot portion, a vertical bearing face and an open back, said body portion opening downwardly between the pedestals of each pair, and reinforcing cross members connecting the sides of the body portion directly above the vertical bearing faces of said pedestals, there being sufficient space between the upper ends of the openings in'the backs of the central pedestals and the adjacent cross members to permit the passage of a central equalizin lever.
