BILLIARD AND POOL TABLE COVER.
Application filed May 24,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that THOMAS MURPHY, a
citizen of the United States of America, re-
siding at Brawley, in the county of Imperial and State of California, has invented new and useful Improvements in Billiard and Pool Table Covers, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the invention is to provide W a simple and eiiicient means for covering a pool or billiard table when not in use to protect the surface of the same from accumulations of dust, and as a substitute for the use of a covering sheet or blank ordinarily employed in this connection and consisting of oil cloth or its equivalent; and with this object in view the invention consists in a construction and combination of parts of which a preferred embodiment is shown in 2 the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of a cover embodying the invention applied in the operative position to a pool table.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken transversely of the same.
Figure 3 is a detail longitudinal section of one end of the same.
The device consists essentially of a housing 10 of-generally cylindrical or tubular form provided with attaching ears 11 by which it may be secured to the side of the pool table frame under the overhanging top or playing surface of the latter so as not to.
project beyond the edge of the pool table and thus interfere with the movements of players standing close to the rail as required in many shots on the table, said housing being provided with terminal bearings 12 for the reception of the extremities of the spindle 13 1921. Serial No. 472,084.
of a spring roller 14: upon which is reeled a cover 15, normally housed and concealed within the casing but adapted to be extended to transversely span the table top or playing' surface as a substitute for the loose cover ordinarily employed in this connection to serve as a protection for the baize playing surface. Any suitable means may be employed for securing a free edge of the cover at the side rail opposite to that under which the roller and its housing are arranged, hooks 16 being shown in the drawing as illustrative of such fastening means, and in removing the cover to expose the playing surface it is only necessary to release the fastening means and permit the spring rollers to retract and reel the cover within the housing.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new and useful is The combination with a pool or billiard table, of a roller housing fixedly attached to the slanting side surface of the table frame so as to be within the vertical plane of the overhang of one of the side rails of the table, a spring actuated roller having its terminals journaled in the opposite ends of the housing, a flexible cover attached to and carried by the roller for extension transversely of the table to occupy a spanning relation to the playing surface thereof, 7 means secured to the free edge of the cover for engagement with the side rail at the opposite side of the table from that carrying the housing.
In testimony whereof he aflixes his signar5 ture.
THOMAS MURPHY.
