Application filed November To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, O'r'ro ALBERT, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of lVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Thrust- Bar Presses; and I dohereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to presses with special reference to baling presses. It contemplates especially a structure adapted togive, the greatest pressure at the end of the press ing operation and aims especially to prevent tilting of the platen by providing for the application of pressing force at the ends of the platen rather than at the middle thereof.
My invent-ion utilizes a screw to provide pressing force and avoids the difficulties common to screw operation in the art which results in a binding distortion of the screw and undue friction thereon.
An object is the provision of means for taking up the weight imposed upon the thrust bars that are used to raise the platen so that the screw will not have to bear this tremendous stress. I accomplish this by utilizing rollers for the thrust bars.
Another and important object of my invention is the provision of means for preventing twisting of the thrust bars resulting from the tilting of the platen and for preventing bending of the screw. These evils are prevented by the provision of guides connected wit-h the thrust bars and the traveler positioned on the screw. 7
Other objects of my invention are simplicity of operation, readiness of construction and durability of parts.

The press box 10 is supported by frame bars 11 and providedwith a suitable door 12 for the removal of the bale. The head 1, 1921. Serial No. 512,086.
piece 13 is connected with the upper end portions of the frame bars and loose platen 14 is guided by the frame bars. The platen 1 1 is provided with apertured lugs 15. Thrust bars 16, shown in detail in Figure 4, which may be cast integral or made in any desired manner, are provided with pins 1? and legs 18. Examination of Figure 2 shows that the legs of the thrust bar 16 are offset with respect to each other. Pivot-s 17 rest in the apertures in lugs 15.
A gear 20 is rigid with screw 21 which is threaded left and right and carried by bearings 22 supported by I beams 23. Frame bars 11 on I beams 23 carry guide rods 25 on which sleeves 26 are slidably positioned. Sleeves 26 are connected by screw threads 27, .or in any other desired manner, to spacer arms 28 affixed, in any desired manner, to traveler 29, as by screw 30. Traveler 29 is threaded to correspond with the threads of screw 21. A spacer arm 28 carries roller 31 contacting with the upper surface of I beam 23. Legs 18 are apert-ured to receive spacer arm 28.
In the operation of the device, gear 20 is rotated by a source of power and turns screw 21 which causes travelers 29 to move in opposite directions. In raising platen 14:, travelers 29 are moved towards each other. As they approach, the pressing force exercised becomes continually greater, the nearer the position of thrust bars 16 to the vertical, because as thrust bars 16 approach the vertical, a proportionately greater lineal space; is covered by the traveler 29 in pro portion to the upward movement of platen 14. In this way, toggle action of great power is exercised. The greater force exerted on thrust bars 16 is not transmitted to screw 21, however, as it is taken up by rollers 31. These rollers therefore. are effective to prevent a distortion of screw 21 and relieve undue friction thereon. Spacer arms 28 are maintained in a direction substantially perpendicular to screw 21 by sleeves 26, sliding on guides 25. These sleeves are useful, therefore, in preventing either leg 18 of thrust bars 16 from advancing with respect to the other because of tilting of the platen and serve to prevent bending of screw 21 and relieve undue friction thereon.
It will be noted that the point of location of lugs 15 is such as to prevent tilting of the platen. If these lugs were located eentrally, that is closer together, the tilting acthe lower ends of said legs, a screw, a tion would result.
