Description

w. R. PAXSON Jan. 22 1924.
SWING Filed March 6 Patented Jan. 22, 1924.
. ire STATES ATENT swine.
Application filed March 6, 1922; Serial No. 541,390.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER R. PAXsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jenkintown, in the county of Montgomery and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Swings, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a novel swing and supporting means therefor,-the primary object of which is to provide means for suspending a double suspension swing from the upper cross member of a doorway casement. Furthermore meansaare provided for suspending a single suspension swing from the same supporting means.
A further object of my invention is to provide a novel swing of this character which comprises a set of tongs each of said set of tongs consisting of a pair of arms pivotally connected together, said pivot being carried by a cross bar spacing each of said set of tongs apart, the upper portion of each of said arms provided with a bent-in portion adapted to engage the upper face ofv a cross member of a doorway casement, the spacing bar carrying means adapted to engage the underface of said doorway casement to tightly clamp said arms to said casement, and meansrfor suspending a double suspension swing, the clamping means carried on said spacing bar being adapted for reception of means for suspending a single suspension swing. r
In the further disclosure of my invention reference is to be had to the accompanying sheet of drawings constituting a part of this specification and in which like characters of reference designate the same or corresponding arts in all the views.
Figure 1-is a front elevation view showing an embodiment of my novel swing suspended from the upper cross piece of a doorway casement and,
Figure 2is a side elevation view of Figure 1 with the upper cross member of the casement in section.
Referring more particularly to the drawings my invention resides in providing a novel swing provided with means for suspending the swing from a doorway casement. dwellings the casement is set on the walls and is provided with-the upper cross member 1 connecting the j ambs of the casement. When the casement is in position in respect to the wall the upper edge of the cross mem- In the ordinary architecture of' her 1 projects beyond the opposite sides of the wall 2'to provide the ledges from which my novel swing is suspended.
This invention also consists essentially in providing a set of tongs 4a-4 spaced apart bar 6. Each of these sets of tongs 4 consists of a pair of arms 77 the upper portion thereof being bent inwardly and downwardly at 8 to engage and seat on the ledges 3-3 of the cross member 1, to support the swing suspended from the cross member 1. 9 designates felt positioned between the portions 8 and the cross member 1 to protect the casement and provide a more effective means for holding the portions 8-8 on the ledges 33 in the use of the swings.
The lower portions of the arm are bent inwardly and downwardly to a central meeting point where said ends are pivotally connected together and to the cross bar 6 by. means of the elements 5. The ends of the arms 7 may be provided with a plurality of openings 9 for adjustment of the tongs for the various sizes of the cross members 1 of the different easements.
The central portion of the bar 6 is provided with a vertical threaded opening 10 through which is threaded a bolt 11 provided at its upper end with a swivel head 12 adapted to engage a block 13 positioned between the said head 12 and the under surface of the cross member 1 to hold the arms and the portions 8 in fixed relation to the cross member 1. 14 designates a lock-nut for locking the bolt against movement when the swing is being used. The lower portion of the bolt 11 is provided with a finger-hold 15 for manipulating the bolt, said fingerhold15 having an opening through which is passed and knotted a single'cord as shown in dottedlines at 16 from which may be suspended a lullaby swing such as is used by infant children.
Links 17 are placed between the ends of the arms 7-7 of the tongs and said links are supported by the pivot members 5 carried by the cross bar 6. To these links are attached or connected S-hooks 18 through which the swing ropes pass and each rope is secured at its lower portion through S-hooks carried on the front and rear portions of the sides of the swing seat 19.
It will readily be seen that I have pro vided a novel swing, the supporting or suspending means of which may be held to the by and pivotally connected at 5 to a cross 7 doorway casement to provide a secure support for the swing. Furthermore, with the removal of the main swing a single cord may be attached to said supporting means and from this cord maybe suspended an infant lullaby swing.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In a device of the character described, two pairs of tongs, means for pivotally securing the arms of the respective pairs of tongs together and for holding the tongs in with elements adapted for engagement with the cross member of a doorway casement, and pressure applying means carried by said securing and spacing means and disposed to apply pressure to the'underface of the cross member.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
WALTER R. PAXSON.
