UNITED STATES ranges PATENT oFFrcE.
LOUIS c. STUKENBORG, or MEMrHIs, TENNESSEE.
FLY SWATTER.
Application filed July 31, 1922. Serial No. 578,797.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LoUIs C. STUKnNnoRe, a citizen of the United States, residing at Memphis, in the county of Shelby and'State fly swatters and has for its principal object to produce a device of this character which is of simple construction, efiicient in operation, and which may be manufactured and marketed at a very moderate cost.
Another object of the invention is to produce a fi swatter which has its body formed of reticulated material and a handle suitably connected thereto, said device being used in or about the house without injuring or damaging the furniture.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described illustrated in the accompanying drawings 26 and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing my invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference denote like or corresponding parts in the several views, and in which In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the invention.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary sectional view taken longitudinally therethrough.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary view showing the relation of the T-shaped handle and the body portion, with parts in section.
Referring now to the drawings wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts 1 indicates the body of a device which is formed of reticulated material. The reticulated body portion of the swatter has the bottom thereof bent upon itself forming a pocket to receive the upper horizontal portion 5 of a T-shaped handle therein, which serves as a strengthening ele-' ment for the body of the device. Formed midway the ends of the body 1 at the juncture of the body proper with the bent portion there is an elongated opening 2 designed to receive the vertical portion 3 of the T- shaped handle, as clearly shown in Figure 3 of the drawings. A thick band of flexible material 4 is placed over the upper portion of the T+shaped handle and reticulated material, so as to prevent the roughened surface of the device from injuring or damaging furniture as will be apparent. The band 4% not only prevents injury to furniture and the like but is also utilized in the capacity of retaining and securing the body portion and theT-shaped panel operatively associated as upon removal of the band these may be easily separated.
From the above it will be seen that the user of the device may grasp the same by the handle and swing the same in the direction of the insect so that the reticulated body will immediately expel the life of the insect due to the'force which is used in operating the swatter.
If for any reason the reduced body portion becomes damaged so as to render it unfit for use it may be readily replaced by a new piece by removing the flexible hand, then slide the body portion through the medium of its opening down on the vertical part free of the T-shaped handle it can be sepa put on a new body by rated therefrom, and the reverse operatioln It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the se veral parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is A device of the character described comprising a reticulated body having its lower end bent upon itself to form a pocket and being provided with an elongated opening arranged midway the ends thereof at the juncture of the body portion with the bent portion, a T-shaped handle having its horizontal portion received in the pocket and its vertical portion passing through the elongated opening, and a flexible band surrounding' the pocket as and for the purpose specified.
