l@ It is one of the objects of the present invention to materially increase the eiiiciency of deep well screw pumps and to that'end the invention involves the introduction into the pump pipe of one or more fixed guide vanes having the function of receiving the swirling water with such a reaction as to facilitate in the upward movement ofthe water and to decrease the stopping or checking reaction as occurs when the blades/are not designed to secure a progressive reaction.
'Another object of the invention is to provide a deep well pump having an efficient organization of rotating'impellers, and to provide for the e'ectiveclubrication of the running arts. L Also it is an object to obtain a simplilied, practicable, substantial and durable organization.
Further objects and advantages will be H0 made manifest in the following` specification of an embodiment of the invention illustrated in the accompanyingdrawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal central section 115 of the improved pump.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal central section showing the runners or impellers in elevation.
Figure 3 is an end perspective looking into 0 one of the removable diffusion guide sleeves.
Figure 4 is a side elevation and partial longitudinal section of one of the diusion sleeves.
The improved pump is of a type having any suitable number of column or pipe sections 2, having exterior right-hand threads 3 to receivethreaded sockets 4 of a coupling tube 5. It is understood that the coupling threads 3 may be either right-hand or lefthand according to the direction of rotation of an impeller shaft 6 extending centrally through the column pipe 2 and through the couplings or shells 5, only one of which is shown. If the coupling threads 3 are right-J` hand, then the direction of rotation of the impeller shaft 6 will be left-hand as here shown. f
An important objectof the invention is to provide for the facile assembly and setting of the pumping means, and these means are here shown as arranged within the couplin shell 5, the upper end of which is provide with an enlarged bore to receive a diffusion member including a'sleeve 7 adapted to be slipped into the shell end and fastened in any suitable manner as by key ball 8, which when removed, enables the withdrawal of the slipped sleeve 7. This sleeve is provided with a central hub 7 and from this there extends a plurality of tangential diffusion vanes or blades 7a, the peculiar construction of which will be described more hereinafter.
About at its longitudinal center the coupling shell is shown as slightly enlarged at 5 and has a plurality of inwardly extending tangential blades 5, .carrying a central bearing 10. In this bearing there is suitably fixed an elongated bushing 1l which projects beyond the ends of the bearing 10 and is .locked as by a key ball 12. This bushing dias" adjacent to its ends exterior grease-wrecei'ving grooves 13 and the bore of the bushing 11 is provided with a lubricant chamber l1', upwardly from which extends la helical groove 11, whereby lubricant is conducted upwardly into the bore of a runner hub 15. This hub has helical, impelling blades 16 of suitablelength and pitch, and in the upper end pf the impeller there is threaded the tubular driving shaft 6, which passes through the sleeve 7. The lower end of the impeller hub 15 is provided with a skirt 15 which is of such diameter to receive the bushing 11 about which it rotates. rlhe grease receiving grooves 13 in conjunction with the skirt 15 provide, when the grooves are filled with grease, a satisfactory means for preventing entrance of sand or sediment to the interior of the grease chamber.
The bushing forms a bearing for an inner and intermediate short shaft 17, threaded in the hub 15 to be driven thereby, and this short shaft extends downwardly and is threaded at 17 in the hub 18 of a lower impeller 19, which includes a helical blade or blades similar to the blades 16, both of which rotate in the conti ous portions, with a close running lit, of t e shell 5. drives the short shaft 17, which in turn drives the lower impeller 19, while the bushing 11 forms a bearing for the short shaft and is held in the bearing 10.
One of the important objects of the invention is to provide for the eiiicient lubrication of deep well twin screw pumps, and in the present case lubrication is secured as by means of a central lubricant tube 22 which extends down through the hollowshaped members and discharges just above the plug 20. Lubricant, and preferably a grease, is forced with suilicient pressure into the tube 22 to flow down through the same and thence, upwardly thereby in the The short shaft 17 is lprovided with a radial lubricant port 17n through which the grease passes under pressureY out into the grease chamber 11' in the bushing 11. From this the grease is carried upwardly by the-groove 11a.
In twin screw pumps the liquid receives a rotary motion as well as a longitudinal movement in the pump pipe and it is an object of the invention to utilize the energy of the liquid expended in rotation to accelerate the upward iow of the liquid. To that end the webs or vanes 5 and 7 are so designed as to react upon the rotating column of Water and tend to lift the same. This is accomplished by curving the lower ends of the blades 5a and 7 slightly forwardly as at a, Figs. 2 and 3, sothat'thel leading edges of the blades will cut the re-y volving steam or water and the intercepted part thereof will be diverted upwardly. It will be apparent that, if-the diverting blades 5 and 7a are simply straight and parallel to the axis of the pump, the blades tend to retard the circular flow and also decrease the `eiiiciency of the pump. By thus curving the blades as at a, the kinetic energy of ghe Water is utilized to accelerate upward .Further embodiments, modifications and changes may be resorted to within the spirit of the invention as here claimed.
What is claimed is:
1. In a deep well pump, a coupling shell having a central fixed tubular bearing support, an elongated bushing fixed in sald support, a short shaft rotatably mounted in the bushing, an impelling member having a, hub fixed upon each end of the short shaft, said impelling members each having a skirt thereon, said skirts surrounding end portions of the bushing, the external di- If the impeller neeafeaa ameter of said sh'rts being substantially the lalqe as the externaldiameter of the said 2. 3. In a deep well pump, a coupling shell having a central tubular supporting member, delectin blades integrally uniting ,said tubular mem er and said shell, an elongated bushing fixed in said member, a short shaft rotatably mounted within the bushing, an impelling member having a hollow central hub fixed upon each end of the short shaft, said hub extending beyond the end of the short shaft to .receive a drive shaft, said impelling members each having a skirt spaced from the shaft and extending some distance along the bushing, lubricant holding grooves in the outer surface of the bush in adjacent the skirt and means to supply lu ricant to said grooves.
4. A coupling shell comprising a tubular member having means on each end thereof for securing it to a section of pipe, a plurality of inwardly extending tangential detlectlng blades integral with said shell, said blades terminating at their inner ends in a hub providing a support, said hub having a bushing secured therein, a shaft rotatable in the bushing and extending beyond each end thereof,C a water impeller secured on each endof the shaft, said impellers each including a hub portion extendingv beyond the end of said shaft, a drive shaft secured to each hub, each of said impellers having a skirt at one end thereof spaced from the shaft to provide an annular cavity, said bushing being arranged in said cavity, lubrieating grooves in said bushing adjacent the skirt and means to supply lubricant to said grooves.
5. A deep well pump composed of a plural-ity` of coupling shells united b y pipe casing, each coupling shell comprising a separate, detachable, and interchangeable unit consisting of a shell member having integral deflecting bladesr located therein, said blades surrounding ahollow hub member, a bushing within the hub member, a shaft journaled within 4the bushing, water impellers mounted on each end of the shaft, said impellers having hubs secured to said shaft, said hubs extending beyond the ends of said shafts, drive shafts threaded lin said extending threaded portion, skirts on 2S blades, a shaft journaled within the hub,
shell, a shaft rotatably mounted within the'- hub, an impelling member having a hub fixed upon said shaft on each side of said central supporting member, a second supporting hub member having deiecting blades and arranged adjacent one of said impellers and between said impeller and th end of the shell.
7. A deep well pump, composed of a plurality of coupling shells united by pipe sections, each of said coupling shells comprisp ing interchangeable units, eachcomposed of a shell `member having deiicting blades thereon, a hubv member carried by said water impellers on opposite sides of said deflecting blades and mounted on said shaft, a
second deflecting member arranged adjacent' one of said impellers,'andv means whereby the last mentioned deflector is secured in place by theA connecting pipe.
8. A. deep well pump, composed of a plurality of coupling shells united by pipe sections, each of said coupling shells comprising interchangeable units, each unit including a casing having deflecting blades Iixed therein, a hub carried by said blades, a shaft journaled within the hub, water impellers on opposite sides of said blades and mounted on said shaft, a rabbet at one end of the coupling shell, a second defi cting member including a removable sleeve arranged in said rabbet, said sleeve having deflecting blades thereon, said rabbet being threaded to receive a pipe, whereby lthe sleeve is removably secured in position.
