Be it known that I, FREDERICK J. GREENE, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Racine, in the county of Racine and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Automatic Riveting Machines, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompany ing drawings, which are a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in automatic riveting machines, more particularly adapted for riveting edge strips of angular form in cross section to panels or side members in forming trunks and similar 7 box like receptacles.
In the present manufacture of trunks the side or panel portions are commonly nailed together along their adjacent edges or to an edge member by hand. This construction requires considerable time and is not as accurate nor as strong as machine work in which the parts are riveted together.
It is one of the objects of the present invention to overcome the before mentioned objectionable features and to provide an improved automatic riveting machine with means for holding a. panel while angular edge strips are riveted thereto, and also for holding the panels while other panels are being riveted to the edge strips.
A further object of the invention is to provide an automatic riveting machine in which means are provided for automatically and intermittently moving the panel or partly assembled trunk or the like, certain predetermined distances with relation to the riveting portion of the machine to receive rivets in lines and spaced distances apart.
A further object of the invention is to provide an automatic riveting machine in which the panel or trunk part may be intermittently moved in lines backwardly or forwardly or at right angles thereto to permit the riveting of all edge portions of the trunk.
A further object of the invention is to provide an automatic riveting machine having adjustable means for automatically stopping the riveting when the last rivet of the line of rivets has been set.

vide an automatic riveting machine which is of simple construction, is strong and durable and is well adapted for the purpose described.
v With the above and other objects in View the invention relates to the improved automatic riveting machine and its parts and combinations as set forth in the claims and all equivalents thereof.

The movable parts are actuated by the driving mechanism 32 mounted on and extending transversely of the upper portion of the machine. The portion of the ma chine thus far described, with the exception of the arm 28, is of ordinary construction and it is not necessary to show nor describe in detail. 8
A transversely extending guide member 33 rigidly mounted on the upstanding column 27 beneath the anvil arm 28 carries a slidable bar 34: which is provided with an outwardly projecting guide arm The slidable bar 34: is formed with a T-shaped in cross section horizontally extending slot 36 for adjustably receiving the heads of adjusting bolts 3'7 of the guide arm to permit adjustment or" said guide arm on the bar. Mounted on the upper face of the guide arm 35 is a member 38 which is slidable longitudinally or at right angles to the path of travel of the guide arm 35 the member 38 being provided with threaded openings 39 to receive bolts 40 for mounting a trunk head supporting frame &1 thereon. One side edge portion of the slidaole member 38 is provided with a rack 38 which is engaged by a spring actuated slidable and reversible dog &2 positioned on one side of the guide arm The dog is reciprocated forwardly and rearwardly by a link and arm connection 43 with a rock shaft 14: journaled on the guide member 33. Said rock shaft is in part of rectangular shape in cross section and the arm a3 is slidably connected thereto and journaled in a bearing 43 adjust-ably mounted on the guide member 33. 4 A clutch wheel t5 connected to the driving mechanism 32 carries a loosely mounted disk 16 provided with an outwardly projecting tubular wrist pin 47. The wrist pin is provided with a spring pressed bolt a8 which is adapted to enter one or the other of two bolt openings 45' formed diametrically opposite each other in the clutch wheel 45 to permit the changing of the time of movement of the rivet hammer with relation to the direction of travel of the slidable member 38. A connecting rod 49 having its upper end portion pivotally connerted to the wrist pin 17 is provided with a manually operable lever 50 which is fulcrumed on the rod and is connected at one end to the spring pressed bolt 48 to permit the easy withdrawals of the bolt from the bolt openings in changing from one opening to the other to adjust relative movement of the parts. The lower end portion of the connecting rod is adjustably connected to a slidable member 4-9 which is vertically slidably mounted on the rear portion of the transverse guide 33. Said slidable member a9 is provided with a projecting pin 51 which is engaged by one arm of a bell crank lever fulcrumed at right angles, with respect to the axis of the clutch wheel 45, on the transverse guide member 33. The lower arm 52 of the bell crank lever is pivotally connected to a reversible spring actuated dog which is slidably mounted in the groove 54: of the transverse guide member Said dog rests upon the upper edge portion of the slidable bar 3st and engages the teeth or notches 3 1. The dogs 42 and 53 have their working ends of angular formation to freely snap over the teeth or recesses of their respective rack portions during their retrieving strokes. and during their working strokes the dogs will positively engage the teeth and intermittently move the respective parts predetermined distances. Both dogs project through their respective supports and carry milled collars 54 having projecting pins 55 which are adapted to removably enter either one of two diametrically opposite openings 56 formed in the slidable members to reverse the directions of the working strokes. The springs of the dogs will hold the parts in adjusted positions and by lifting and turning the dogs a one quarter turn the pins will rest upon the surface of the slidable members and hold the dogs out of engagement with the rack parts. The milled collars 54: are provided for convenience in disengaging the dogs from the teeth or turning them to reverse their direction of engagement.
The rock shaft id is journaled and supported from the opposite end portions of the transversely extending guide members 33. One end of the rock shaft 44- is provided with an upwardly extending arm 57 fast thereon which has a horizontally extending link connection 58 with a similar arm 59 mounted fast on a horizontal rock shaft 60 extending transversely across the rear portion of the machine. Said rock shaft 60 is journaled in bearings extending from the (all transverse guide member 33 and is provided with a downwardly and outwardly extending arm 61 which has a link connection 62 with the vertically slidable member 4L9. The slidable member 49' rocks the shaft through the link 62 and the arm 61, and the shaft 60 in turn rocks the square shaft 44 through the arms 57 and 59 and the link 58.
A foot pedal 68 of ordinary construction controls the starting'and stopping of the machine.
In order to support the load and the strain of the work the forwardly projecting guide arm 35 is provided with a downwardly depending supporting member 64: having a roller 65 ournaled on its lower end which bears on the upper edge portion of the transversely extending track member 66 mounted on the base portion 26. Said supporting member 64 carries a spring retrieved foot lever 67 which has a link connection 68 with the dog 42 for conveniently disengaging said dog with its rack 38 when it is desired to quickly interrupt the forward or rearward feed of the slidable member 38.
A spring retrieved hand lever 69 pivotally mounted on the upper side portion of the column 27 extends forwardly therefrom and is adapted to be releasably held in its lower on position to cause the operation of the machine by engaging the lower end of a de pending latch 70 which is pivoted at its upper end to th column. The foot pedal 63 is connected to said hand lever 69 by a link 63 and a link 71 connects the lever to the driving mechanism of the machine.
The slid'able bar 34 has adjustably mounted thereon at its opposite ends two upstand ing members 72 which are connected together at their upper ends by a transversely the hand lever 69 and permit said lever to swing upwardly to off position and automatically stop the operation of the machine.
In the first operation of forming a trunk section one of the panels, and preferably the bottom one A is placed on a frame 75 to receive the perforated angular edge strips B preparatory to securing the. side panels C to said strips. This frame 75 is clearly shown inFigures 11 to let inclusive and comprises an upper rectangular enclosed space 76 formed by angle irons 77 mounted on the frame. The rectangular space 76 is slightly larger than the panel to accommodate the thickness of the folded angular edge strips which areinterposed between the angle irons and the edges of the panels to hold said parts in alined position while being attached together by the split rivets 78. ,The said frame 75 is adjustably mounted on leg members 79 and said members have bolts 86 which adjust-ablyengage the T-shape-d slots 36 of the bar 34. When the parts are in posit-ion th machine is actuated to feed and drive the split rivets through the perforations of the angular strips and into the panel where the split portions of the rivets are clinched as shown in Figure 10. In riveting the slidable member is moved rearwardly and forwardly and the slidable bar at transversely until all of the strips are fastened to the edge portions of the panel. When a sufficient number of the panels have been provided with edge strips. the rez'stangular frame is also used to hold side panels while the angular edge strips B are being mounted on their opposite ends. When thus far completed the rectangular frame 75 is removed and a rectangular frame 81 is substituted therefor which is adjustable to accommodate side panels of different widths. This frame comprises forwardly extending bars 82 which are mounted on the leg members and are connected together by a transverse bar 83. The upper ends of the leg member" are also connected together by a rod 84 which has horizontally adj ustably mounted thereon forwardly projecting finger-s 85 provided with clips 85 which engage the inner edges of the side panels C resting thereon.
The lower end portions of the leg members 79 are provided withforward'ly projecting supports 86 which support the lower edges of the bottom panel A and also the side panels when attached thereto. When the frame 81 is used angularly extending fingers 87 are bolted on the'opposite sides of the anvil arm 28 and project upwardly and out-- wardly therefrom to engage the inner por tion of the angular edge strips 13 and hold said strips in position to be riveted tothe side panels C as clearly shown in Figure 1 When a predetermined number of the side panels have been secured to the bottom panels the frame 81 and the leg members 79 and the projecting supports 86 are removed and the rectangular frame ll before mentioned and shown in Figures 19, 20 and 21, is mounted on top of the slidable member 38 by the bolts 4:0 which extend through portions of the frame and thread into the open ings 39 of said member 38. Said frame ll is provided with forwardly projecting upper side guide members 88 and upper forwardly projecting supporting arms 89 upon which the end portions D of the trunk rest. The supporting arms 89 are provided with stops 90 against which the inner or open edges of the trunk section heads bear to properly position the partly assembled trunk section for further assembling. The side guide members 88 have their outer end portions 88 curved outwardly away from each other to permit the easy entrance of the trunk section therebetween. Said curved end portions are provided with spring bell crank latches 91 which are adapted to hold the trunk section in position between the members 88 as clearly indicated in Figures 20 and 21. The springs 92 of said latches are connected thereto to swing on opposite sides of the pivotal connections of the latches and hold same in either open or closed position as indicated in Figure 21.
In using the frame 41 the end panel of the trunk section is placed on the supporting arms 89 against the stops 90 and the partly assembled trunk section is slid between the guide members 88 with the flanges of the edge strips B resting in position on the end panel. As thus positioned the said flanges may be riveted to the end panel in the same manner before described.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that with slight changes in the supporting means for the panels the trunk panels may be easily and expeditiously riveted together and that the rivets will be automatically fed, spaced apart and driven into the parts.
lVhat I claim as my invention is:
1. An automatic riveting machine in part, comprising a slidable member having a forwardly projecting arm, a slidable member mounted on the arm, a rectangular frame removably mounted thereon, means for positioning a trunk part on said rectangular frame, means for locking the trunk parts in position on said frame, and means for intermittently moving said slidable members predetermined distances.
2. An automatic riveting machine, comprising a standard provided with riveting mechanism, a transversely extending guide member mounted on the standard, a rock shaft of rectangular shape in cross section carried by and extending longitudinally of the guide member, another shaft extending parallel thereto, a reciprocating member for rocking the last mentioned shaft, a link and arm connection between the two shafts for transmitting motion from one to the other, a slidable bar mounted on the guide mem her, a rack and dOg and bell crank means for transmitting the reciprocal motion of the reciprocating member to an intermittent motion of the slidable bar, said slidable bar provided with an outwardly extending guide arm, a slidable member mounted on the arm, a rack and dog and arm connection between the rectangular in-cross-sect-ionshaft and the last mentioned slidable member for transmitting the rocking movement of the shaftto an intermittent movement of the slidable member, said arm connection slidably engaging the rectangular in-crosssection-shaft, and means on said slidable member and said slidable bar to receive interchangeable trunk part holding frames.
An automatic riveting machine, comprising a standard provided with riveting mechanism, a transversely extending guide member mounted on the standard, a rock shaft of rectangular shape in cross section carried by and extending longitudinally of the guide member, another shaft extending parallel thereto, a reciprocating member for rocking the last mentioned shaft, a link and arm connection between the two shafts for transmitting motion from one to the other, a slidable bar mounted on the guide member, a rack and dog and bell crank means for transmitting the reciprocal motion of the reciprocating member to an intermittent motion of the slidable bar, said slidable bar provided with an outwardly extending guide arm, a slidable member mounted on the arm, a rack and dog and arm connection between the rectangular in-cross-sectionshaft and the last mentioned slidable member for transmitting the rocking movement of the shaft to an intermittent movement of the slidable member, said arm connection slidably engaging the rectangular in-crosssection-shaft, a lever normally in its on position for controlling the operation of the moving parts, means for holding the lever in its on position, means for automatically releasing the lever to permit it to swing to its off position when the slidable bar has travelled predetermined distances in either direction, and means on the slidable member and the slidable bar to receive interchangeable trunk part holding frames.
