This invention relates to improvements in' cooling devices for engines, and has' for its object to provide a means for such purpose which can be used in connection with ma.- rine explosive engines, 'especially of the outboard type, andobviating the use of a force-pump for ,circulating the water through the watervjacket of the engine..
This and other objects hereinafter set forth are attained by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which shows an outboard engine attached to the stern of a boat and provided with theimproved cooling means. j

Outboard engines of this character are usually provided with a plunger-pump for forcing the cooling water through the engine jacket, but this method is objectionable in that, in sandy or salt waters the pump fills with grit and dirt and continuously causes trouble for the owners of the boat. This invention avoids the use of a plunger-pump and consequently overcomes the serious objections mentioned. f
This invention consists in locating a water-intake 14 in or attached to the rudder 13. and connecting this inlet 14 to the water jacket ofthe engine with a flexble'pipe 15. The mouth 16 of the water-intake 14 is preferably located at the front side-of the rndder slightly above the axis of theprope-ller shaft 17 and behind the position of the propeller blades when they are at the top side of the propeller shaft during their revolution. At this point of revolution theI propeller blades force the water rearwardly and consequently directly into the mouth .16 of the water-intake let and through the same and also the pipe 15 into and through the water 'acket of the engine and discharges throng a pipe 17 into'the exhaust manifold 12l1n'a manner common to this class4 of en 'nes.
