Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. KIESEL, J r., a citizen of the United States, and resident of Altoona, county of Blair, State of i Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Side Frames for Freight-Car Trucks, of which the following is a specification.
' rFhe present invention relates to railway 1u car trucks of the freight car type and particularly to the side frames thereof.
The improvement in truck side frames which the present invention is designed to effect resides particularly inthe construc- '1:1' tion and form of the lower bar, or chord, of
the frame, that is, the bar which supports the bolster and springs. Heretofore the lower part of this bar, that is, the part under the springs has been made entirely as avbox nel shape members have joined the bottom of -said4 box section. In this construction the theoretical length of thel lower bar is excessively great requiring excess metal to resist the stresses. Theoretically, this lower bar, or chord, should have the form of a catenary in' order. to provide maximum strength with a minimum weight of metal. 1t is an object of the present invention to produce a frame in which the lower chord approaches the catenary form as nearly as it is possible to make it and still leave the necessary spaces for the springs, holsters, etc. l A further object of this invention is to reinforce theweb of the lower` chord in such a way that the said web will be placed throughout in the location of least angularity and distortion and the line connecting.

section, andthe webs of the diagonal chanrll`he frame illustrated by the drawings conslsts of a one-,piece casting formed with an upper chord 10, a lower chord 11, uprlght struts 12, and end portions 13 having their lower faces shaped to fit over a pair of journal boxes. The struts and chords define V`a substantially rectangular opening for the bolster, springplank and springs and substantially triangular side openings. Preferably the upper chord 10 is of channel or U-section opening downwardly (see Figures 3 and 7) and the struts 12 are of U-section opening towards the triangular spaces (see Figure 8). The lower chord 11, in which the present invention particularly resides, depends from the ends ofthe upper chord in the form of'a catenary as nearly as practicable. 1t consists v*of inclined portions 14 extending downwardly from the upper chord and joining a subst-antially horizontal portion 15 defining the bottom of the bolster opening. Preferably the inclined portions 14 are of channel or U-section opening upwardly, or towards the triangular spaces, with the web at the bottom. As shown in Figures 1 and 9, these inclined portions each have a web 14a with upwardly extending marginal flanges 14,", having beads 14 at their upper edges. As shown in Figures 1, 3 and 4, the bottom or horizontal portion is also of U-section but opening downwardly, the web being at the top. Thus the web 15a has the depending flanges 15b which extend throughout the length of said port-ion, and at their ends are tapered to join the inclined portions adjacent the lower ends of the struts 12. Preferably these flanges 15b have reentrant flanges 15. If desired, to provide additional strength, the central portions ofthe reentrant ianges 15c may be joined, as
shown at the bottom of Figure 3, thus forming a box section at this point. vThe web 15a of this bottom portion may be extended laterally to provide side Hanges 18 and these side anges and the side anges 15b may be reenforced by vertical webs 16. f
One of the principal features of this construction resides in locating the web 15a at thetop of the horizontal portion and joining it to the webs of the inclined portion so that the inclined webs 14a and the bottom web 15a form one continuous web approaching in length the desired catenary curve.
Heretoforathe inclined webs'have joined a web at the bottom of the horizontal portion',
thereby requiring-a heavier construction because of the length along the web from end to end ofthe side frame.
In the present construction the web of the 1 lower chord is located throughout its extent in the position ofleast angularity and disl. l tortion, and the line connecting the neutral axes of the sections is close to the theoretical line of Aleast bending strain in the chord.
VHence it follows that psaid chord can be formed with le metal than is possible -in the prior constructions and Aat the same time be as strong or stronger.
Although one embodiment of theV invention has been described in detail it is to be understood that the invention is not thus limited, but includes modifications and changes that come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A truck side frame comprising van' upper chord, a lower chord, and upright struts defining with said chords a central bolster opening, said lower chord depending from said upper chord as nearly as practicable in the form of a catenary and having'a U-.sec-
f tion, opening downwardly ,below said bolster openlng, and opening upwardly through the remainder of its extent.
2. A truck side frame includinga lower chord comprising a horizontal web forming a seat for the spring plate and inclined webs extending from said horizontal web to the upper chord of the frame, said i inclined webs having upwardly extending anges of substantially uniform 4width and said L horizontal web having downwardly extendchord of the frame, said inclined webs having upwardly extending flanges throu hout the length thereof and said horizonta web having downwardly extending side {ianges terminating in reentrant flanges, the central portion of said reentrant flanges being connected to form a box section.
5. A truck side frame having a central bolster opening and a lower chord havin a substantially horizontal `web portion de lsaid chords and struts formin ing the bottom of said opening and having inclined webportions connected to the up-f perchord of the frame, said horizontalweb portion having downwardly extending anges terminating in reentrant flanges, the central portions/of saidjreentrant liangs l being connectedto' form abox section. c"

a substantially rectangular bolster opening and substantially triangular side openings, said lower chord including a substantiallyliorizontal web with downwardlyextending anges below said bolster opening, the central portions of said anges being connected to form a box section;
10. A truck side frame consisting of an integral castingcomposed of an upper chord, a
lower chord depending from the ends thereof, upright struts joinin intermediate points of said chords, an end portionsl adapted to rest on a pair of journal boxes,

A truck side frame consisting of channel bar sections forming an upper chord, alowerchord depending from the ends thereof, upright struts joining intermediate points of said chords, and end portions adapted to rest on a pair of journal boxes, said chords and struts forming a central rectangular bolster opening and Substantially tr'ian lar si e openings, said lower chord havmg a U-section with a substantially horizontal web and downwardly extending flanges below said central o ning and with inclined webs and upwar extending anges of substantially uniform width between said upper 'chord and struts.
12. A truck side frame consisting of an integral casting composed of an upper chord, a lower chord depending from the ends thereof, upright struts joinin intermediate points of said chords, an end portions having under surfaces adapted to bear on a air of journal boxes, said chords and struts iorming a central substantiall rectangular bolster opening and substantially triangular side openings, said upper chord and-struts having a lll-section opening downwardly and towards said triangular openings respectively, said lower chord having an inwardly opening ll-section between its points of connection with said upper chord and said struts and having a downwardly opemng U-section with a substantially horizontal web below said chords, and struts forming a central substantiall rectangular bolster opening and substantlally-triangular side openings, said upper chord and struts having a U-section opening downwardly and towards said triangular openings respectively, said lower chord having an inwardly opening U-section between its points of connection with said upper chord and said struts and having a substantially horizontal web below said bolster opening with downwardly extending flanges, the central portions of Said anges being connected toA form a box section.
