' UNITEDSTATES PATENT err- 1cc- ARTHUR B. WEBB, OF WATEBTOWN, WISCONSIN, ASSIGNOR '10 MONAIBCH TRACTOR INCORPORATED, OF WATER/DOWN, WISCONSIN, A CORPORATION 01 DELAWARE snowrnow.
Application and 4 m 17, 2922. Serial 80.554328.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR B. WEBB, citizen of the United States, residing at Watertown, in the county of Jefferson and State of Wisconsin, have invented av certain new and useful Improvement in Snowplows, of which the following is a full, clear, concise and exact description.
My invention relates to plows employed upon roads for removing snow therefrom or otherwise scraping the same. The invention resides in providing an improved form of scraping blade obliquely disposed upon the vohiclecarrying it and having two impor- 1 taut characteristics.
One of these characteristics resides in forming the blade with a rear and upper portion that projects rearwardly of and outwardly from the underlying portion of the blade. By means of a blade thus constru'cted the embankment of snow or other material, if sufliciently high, is formed with a step therein to obstruct the falling movement of the upper portion thereof into the cleared space 0 the step formed in the embankment first receiving material therefrom that would otherwise fall onto the roadway.
The blade, whether having the rear- 39 wardly and outwardly projectin overhanging portion or not, is prefera ly formed with two contiguous substantially horizontal portions, one above the other, that are angularly related andproject outwardly Where contiguous. The outer faces of these two contiguous portions of the blade are preferably concave upon different axes which cause the curvatures of the blade faces to intersect to produce the desired angular relation of the blade portions, where contiguous. It is the upper concave portion of the blade which is continued beyond the length of the lower concave blade portion to produce the desired step formation in the embankment cast up by the blade. The upper concave blade portion serves to laterally cast the snow or other material when it is of a depth that exceeds the lower concave portion of the blade and incase such should be deflected inwardly in the action of the plow. The upper portion of the plow blade is thus of particular service where snow is being embanked in the second or third cuts of the plow.
The invention will be more fully exthe roadway; the tread of track. The trucks are mounted to swing independently of each other upon a shaft 8.-
plained by reference to the accompanying drawings showing the referred embodiment thereof and 111 whic Fig. 1 illustrates a plow upon the forward end of an endless chain track tractor, though the invention is not to be limited to the form of vehicle upon which the plow is carried; Fig. 2 is a plan. new of the structure shown in Fig. 1; Fig.
3 is a sectional view on line 33 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 isa front view, somewhat diagram matic, illustrating the. plow in action; and Fig. 5 is a diagrammatic view illustrating a bank of snow, in cross section, with the step formation therein formed by the rear portion of the upper plow blade section.
Like parts are indicated by similar characters of reference throughout the different figures.
The plow supporting or carrying vehicle illustrated is inclusive of a main frame 1 and two endless chain tracks 2 and 3. Each track pames about a pair of sprocket wheels 4 and 5 that are mounted upon a truck 6 which carries idler wheels 7 turning upon the lower stretch of the corresponding carried b the brackets 9 which depend from the rame 1. Any suitable means may be employed for steering the vehicle and any suitable form of wer plant may serve to propel it, but as t e invention is not to be-limited to the nature of the vehicle employed nor to the manner of effecting propulsion further description thereof need not be given.
A supporting framework 10,is mounted upon the front end of the main frame 1 through the intermediat-ion of struts 11, braces 12 and uprights 13. The plow is preferabl inclusive of two scraping blades 14, 15 eac mounted upon the framework 10 obliquely of the vehicle and converging in front of the vehicle to forma V. The blade 14 may be of common construction, the outer face thereof being concave. This blade is desirably made of sheet metal suitably curved. The blade 15 is in part similar to the blade 14 but symmetrically related thereto. The curvature of the blade 14 and the symmetrical counterpart thereof in the blade 15 have the curvature illustrated, in cross section, in the lower portion of Fig. 3. The ,blade 15 also includes an addition 16 that also has its outer face conitsa V T 1,480,581
cave, the main portion of the blade 15 and its addition 16 being angularly related as clearly illustrated in Fig. 3, these two elements projecting outwardly where con 'is made of step formation, when this embankment is sufficiently high', as diagrammatically illustrated in Fig. 5.
While I have herein shown and particularly described the preferred embodiment of my invention 1 do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction shown "as changes may readily be made without departing from the spirit of 'my invention, but having thus described my invention I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent the following 1. In a road plow, the combination with a vehicle; of a scraping blade. carried by the vehicle obliquely thereof and having an upper rear portion overhanging and projecting rearwardly of and outwardly from the underlying portion of the blade.
e main plow portion that un- 2. In a road plow, the combination with a vehicle; of a scraping blade carried by the vehicle obliquely thereof and having two conti ous substantially horizontal rtions, one a vs the other, that are an lated and project outwardly where contiguous. x
3. In a road plow, the combination with a vehicle; of a scraping blade carried. by
the vehicle obliquely thereof and having two contiguous substantially horizontal angularly related portions, one above the other,-
whose outer faces are concave.
4. In a road plow, the combination with a vehicle; of a scraping blade carried by the Vehicle obliquely thereof and having two contiguous substantially horizontal portions, one above the other, that are angularly related and project outwardly where contiguous, the upper portion overhanging and projecting rearwardly beyond and outwardly from the lower portion. I
5. In a road plow, the combination with a vehicle; of a scraping blade carried by the vehicle obliquely thereof and having two contiguous substantially horizontal angularly related portions, one above the other, Whose outer faces are concave, the upper portion overhanging and projecting rearwardly beyond and outwardly; from the lower portion.
In witness whereof, I hereunto subscribe my name this 28th day of Mar. A. D., 1922.
ARTHUR B. WEBB.
